AFL Rich 100: The highest-paid players at every club and how they affect the salary cap

NORTH MELBOURNE

Jared Polec WING $650,000-$750,000

Ben Cunnington MIDFIELD $575,000-$675,000

Luke McDonald DEFENCE $550,000-$650,000

Jy Simpkin MIDFIELD $550,000-$650,000

The Jared Polec deal was a bust and still has a year to run, which is hurting the Kangaroos’ purse strings. Ben Cunnington is back now after his battle with cancer while the next two best paid players are the past two Syd Barker Medal winners in Jy Simpkin and Luke McDonald. Simpkin is likely to become the next Kangaroos’ captain and could well be the club’s highest paid player in the years ahead. The forward line could be the focus in the future with Cam Zurhaar out of contract and considering his options.

I am pleased that Caro (who as we know never has anything nice to say) actually stood up for us. I am sure it will be the first and last time but credit where credit is due.

No job for Jackson

JON RALPH

NORTH Melbourne says former Melbourne chief executive Peter Jackson has been a valuable behind-the-scenes consultant for the club, but will not take on a formal role at Arden St.

Essendon and Demons chief executive Jackson helped out new president Sonja Hood in recent months, after being introduced by North Melbourne adviser and ex-Melbourne coach Paul Roos.

North Melbourne’s current chief executive Ben Amarfio continues in his role for the time being. But as the Herald Sun reported on Saturday, he is likely to move on at some stage in the future.

Hood sidestepped any ongoing commitment to Amarfio in her weekend press interviews, despite citing his role helping the club become debtfree as it continues to redevelop the Arden precinct.
Jackson has been a valuable sounding board for Hood and the North Melbourne board as they pursued new coach Alastair Clarkson with a single-minded focus.
While Amarfio’s role will remain a subject of discussion, Hood said on Monday night the chief executive had many significant projects to work on.
“I reached out to Peter Jackson on behalf of the club board before we started formal conversations with Alastair Clarkson and his manager some weeks ago,” Hood said.
“Peter was recommended to us by Paul Roos, and he has provided great counsel.
“As far as the CEO’s role is concerned, Ben Amarfio played a key role in securing Alastair Clarkson, and he will continue that work as we begin to assemble the team around Alastair.
“There are a number of other big ticket items on the club’s agenda – completing the latest stage of our $8m Arden St redevelopment, launching our Future Fund, securing the priority draft selection assistance package from the AFL, re-signing major partners, implementing the recommendations of the Geoff Walsh report, to name a few.
“Ben will play a key role in all of those projects.”
This is a new one to my eyes. I've been pushing this barrow for a long time, a very long time. I think it is what makes us bulletproof in Melbourne and see it as the pathway back to 11 home games. Be wrapt if it is on Sonja and the board's list.

I hope Whateley asks some different questions to On The Couch. As North fans, I would like some insight into his thoughts about the players, what he is excited to do first etc.

Look forward to hearing why he didn’t select *
He has already addressed this 1000 times. If Whately is as good as he thinks he is, he doesn't go down this path.

What an abomination that interview was 'On the Couch'...

More about GWS, *, and tassie than there was about North.

Cornes is irrelevant. Who gives a * what he says. Seriously.
Who??

I like the Corn and you all will as well once you understand he's NQR. The Corn makes me laugh, he's Cornman to Wilsons Wonder woman.

As we improve it becomes harder to hate on us and they'll need to invent new material, will be fun to watch.
Caro wouldn't blink when even after a win she'd say, " the cash strapped Kangaroos blah, blah, blah".

Looking forward to playing Richmond and the two shite sides from Adelaide next season.

I'm good with that. Let's just get on with it

After decades of bagging us at every single opportunity she'll never change, the hatred will always be bubbling just under the surface. However these comments come two days after Sonja Hood was on 3AW with her (and the rest of the panel) and I suspect she may actually respect Sonja for the way she's managed this year and in particular the appointment of Clarko. So we might get some respite from Caro albeit fleeting.

That sucks. Good on the club for trying to make moves though

We didn't miss out on anything here so there's no reason to be disappointed. Jackson consulted and that's all that was required of him. The club hasn't offered him a job so he didn't turn us down.

We get enough grief over all the big fish that we failed to catch so there's no need to despair by inventing new stories about big fish that we failed to catch.

Footy Carrofied is as contrived a show as has ever been.

Corn's gonna Corn and Caro is gonna to be the vocal mouthpeice for women in footy despite not being a woman of footy anywhere but from the cheap seats.

Any women staff member, volunteer, board member, president or player has more credibility when it comes to being a woman of footy. Caro sits at a computer or in front of a camera often making sh*t up to generate clicks and views while white knighting for her gender while never having actually got in the fray.

First lady of footy, my arse, she probably wouldn't be top 50.

Could you imagine Mike Sheehan or Mark Robertson ever being called "the president of footy".

I get what you're saying but there's no disputing that she was and continues to be a pioneer for women in football media.

Honestly between the 2 of 'em, Caro is comfortably more fair to us than Corn.

It's like comparing the smells of 2 different turds.

They are both despicable creatures. Caro way more so for her sustained campaign of hate and vitriol that has spanned decades. One comment doesn't vindicate squat. She really is a vile specimen.

Cornes is hilarious. not only does he look like a thunderbird, he's so thin skinned he's bordering on transparent and his commentary is akin to an angry yobbo supporter screaming from the outer to get a rise.

And he's a Cornes.....hilarious.

Look, we all like Luke.

But 5 x $550-$650k was a ridiculous contract to hand out, despite the Syd Barker season.

He had a great season and got a lot of uncontested ball off half back, but I really hope we have/are front loading the shizen out of that deal.

That name should be McKay or LDU, not McDonald.
