I get what you're saying but there's no disputing that she was and continues to be a pioneer for women in football media.

Sure.

I will say I really do not value much of the footy media at all. Her included.

I rate very very few journo's. I mean if we are talking about women in footy media my pick would be Emma Quayle and she has been in clubland for some time. This is because I fundamentally like factual over opinion. It is why I rate Rick's stuff so highly. It is based on actual analysis and not feeding off the drama and politics.

I also think that Caro is a caricature. She is about as much of a troll (in the internet sense) as what Corn is, ie she is completely fine to run with half truths or feelpinions so long as it provokes reaction.

Look, we all like Luke.

But 5 x $550-$650k was a ridiculous contract to hand out, despite the Syd Barker season.

He had a great season and got a lot of uncontested ball off half back, but I really hope we have/are front loading the shizen out of that deal.

That name should be McKay or LDU, not McDonald.
Now, yes. Then, no.

When LMac signed his contract LDU had played 30 games.

McKay had played 15.

However I do hope that practically all of our bigger contracts are front ended to the sh*t house.

AFL Rich 100: The highest-paid players at every club and how they affect the salary cap

NORTH MELBOURNE

Jared Polec WING $650,000-$750,000

Ben Cunnington MIDFIELD $575,000-$675,000

Luke McDonald DEFENCE $550,000-$650,000

Jy Simpkin MIDFIELD $550,000-$650,000

The Jared Polec deal was a bust and still has a year to run, which is hurting the Kangaroos’ purse strings. Ben Cunnington is back now after his battle with cancer while the next two best paid players are the past two Syd Barker Medal winners in Jy Simpkin and Luke McDonald. Simpkin is likely to become the next Kangaroos’ captain and could well be the club’s highest paid player in the years ahead. The forward line could be the focus in the future with Cam Zurhaar out of contract and considering his options.

I don't have Hun access so I cannot see the full article but what I would be interested in is what we look like comapared to other clubs.

I would have thought that even $750k was on the low end for a highest paid player. Which would suggest that regardless of the figures being published here that we have space to burn. Even more if we have dragged payments forward.

There will be enough $ to pay those guys.

550-650 is fine for LMac.

It was probably the right contract at the time. Everyone assumed he was finally going to fulfil his potential. Average wage around the time was 375k a year so i think 550k would have been around the money for LMac.

I’d love to see Geelong’s payment bands.

You’d have 10 blokes on 750+ with the other 32 fighting over the other $6m (200k each)

GEELONG

Mark Blicavs UTILITY $550,000 – $650,000

Tom Hawkins FORWARD $550,000 – $650,000

Tom Stewart DEFENCE $600,000 – $700,000

Mitch Duncan DEFENCE $600,000 – $700,000

Patrick Dangerfield MIDFIELD $750,000 – $850,000

Jeremy Cameron FORWARD $900,000 – $1,000,000

Geelong does a brilliant job keeping all of their star players on reasonable wages which seem modest compared to some of the bigger-dollar deals handed out elsewhere. Yes, Jeremy Cameron and Patrick Dangerfield are the top earners on decent wickets, but there is a flat structure right throughout the next tier of star players such as Cameron Guthrie, Tom Stewart, Mark Blicavs and Mitch Duncan. Stewart, as arguably the best rebounding defender in the game, could earn hundreds of thousands of dollars more on the open market, but he could also be the next captain of the Cats. Andrew Mackie and Stephen Wells may run the best pay spreadsheet in the game.

GWS

Stephen Coniglio MIDFIELDER $900,000-$1,000,000

Josh Kelly MIDFIELDER $800,000-$900,000

Toby Greene FORWARD-MIDFIELDER $800,000-$900,000

Lachie Whitfield DEFENDER $700,000-$800,000

Nick Haynes DEFENDER $650,000-$750,000

Sam Taylor DEFENDER $650,000-$750,000

Tim Taranto MIDFIELDER-FORWARD $600,000-$700,000

The Giants have spent vast fortunes on their midfield and as of this year and next have had to pay up big for their backline due in Nick Haynes and Sam Taylor, with the back-ended nature of Phil Davis’ deal still causing problems.

All of Lachie Whitfield, Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly have potentially been worth $900,000 at the peak of their careers, but instead all are on $1m as an average on long-term deals. Whitfield has had ankle problems for much of the year and Coniglio has battled hard. But million dollar players need to be winning you games regularly. Taranto and Jacob Hopper haven’t come cheap either.

Taylor is justifiably well paid but Haynes this year is only average for intercepts and below average for disposals. The Giants back-ended Davis’ deal so heavily, instead of retiring this year they spread a new deal out over two seasons (including next year) to get him under the cap.

Notice they don’t include Selwood, Guthrie, Tuohy, Higgins, Smith, who would all be (bar Higgins maybe) earning $500k+.

Saying Tom Hawkins is only getting $550 to $650k is laughable, maybe in the cap that’s right.

Yeah, that’s just flat out ridiculous. Then you have the captain earning half of the top earner. Horseshit.

‘We take unders to keep the side together’.

No you don’t.

I can 100% see him on $500k.
He's made his money throughout his career and now he wants to have success with the team and play with his mates for as long as he can.
If it means he takes a 'cut' to do so then 100% he does it.
Saves the conversations around having to let him go or bait from other clubs that want to poach him.

That was good. I want to buy an apartment in that North Melbourne development. Maybe we could all move there and abuse each other from our balconies.

Geelong does a brilliant job keeping all of their star players on reasonable wages which seem modest compared to some of the bigger-dollar deals handed out elsewhere. The star group above top out at $450k total! Geelong are famous for playing for well-unders in the name of "giving something back" albeit some do modestly garnish their wages with occasional guest appearances for Costa Greengrocers and Cotton On. Andrew Mackie and Stephen Wells may run the best set of "double entry" spreadsheets in the game.

*O'Connor and Tuohy are part of an AFL Ireland Ambassadorial program where the GAA contribute AUD $3 million per season into Geelong's salary cap to offset developmental costs of Irish players.

Funnily enough a friend of mine played golf yesterday with a very prominent player manager who will not be named & they were discussing Geelong.

Danger is on 500k, Hawkins is on 400k, Selwood is on 300k.

He was saying that GC & Geelong will trade a bit this trade period leveraging Geelong's cap space (expect Pick 7 to be involved). Hopper & Brunh from GWS both going to the Cattery. They even have space to potentially bring in Grundy.

Taranto to Richmond is done. Hill/McStay to Pies. Jackson to Freo. None of these will be news to people here.

He also said that this years trade period will see more salary dumping then ever before, which hopefully is something we leverage. GC & Geelong as I mentioned above already have some agreements around it.

They have managed their list and cap very well. Haven't had players on big / long contracts when in the 30s. This is where GWS are going to be in trouble. You can't have 30+ year olds earning 800+.
