Jesus F Christ I shouldn't go here but roads are paid for through taxes. Paying rego won't stop you being hit by a truck or stop aggro dickhead motorists being pissed off that you're in "their" space.
The right to use a vehicle on a road is paid for by registration.

Along with TAC insurance.

???Sydney road???
Sitting at the traffic lights on Sunday & 2 cyclists went through the red light a car turning onto Sydney road hit the skids, he tooted his horn & 1 of the cyclists gave him the bird
If only everyone respected everyone else’s right to be on the roads
It sounds like they were in the wrong ... but it does take bikes longer to clear an intersection than cars and if the light turns orange just before you enter, you'll still be crossing on the red so cars have to anticipate, not just go. Having a car turn onto you is a f#@$in scary adrenaline thing. If I'd just had a near miss, then been tooted, I might not be polite either. Though I wouldn't ride Sydney Rd unless I absolutely had to.

Yes. But the argument is usually "my rego pays for the roads' maintenance", which isn't correct. But it's a red herring. Paying repo would not stop anyone from getting hit or aggro between cyclists and motorists. Pretty sure the beef between Arch and the guy he hit is not about rego.

They were definitely in the wrong as they were well behind us on the road & we had plenty of time to stop but this is not only a bike ridder issue as I have seen plenty of cars go through red lights

It's a good argument that one. They, as above, argue its not law and because the law states they have a right to be on the road then they should be allowed. They then argue that the rest of us (via our taxes) should pay for them to have bike lanes for their safety. But we're too busy paying our rego for the upkeep of the roads that we need. So they want the bike paths, but they dont want to pay for it, and then complain when we ask them to take a different safer route. And the thing is, a lot of these bike riders aren't riding to commute, they're doing it for exercise. Now, I pay to go use a gym, I pay to go use the golf course, I pay to go swim at the pool, but those self entitled cyclists won't pay a rego to contribute to the road system they say is unsafe!

Liam Boy I noticed you haven't addressed the fact that the guy hit actually had a safe bike path route he could have taken but chose not to.
You can't ride a pushbike properly on a bike path. There are people there for a start. I used to ride between 30 and 50km/hr (according to the speedo on the bike) around the city on roads but couldn't do that on the bike paths cos it wasn't safe.

As for rego - a portion of it goes on insurance and another portion of it goes to repair the damage that hundreds of kilos of metal does to roads while traveling on them. Trucks do more damage tho. The road where most of those accidents I referred to earlier happened was destroyed by trucks in a few places.

Obviously if the road had been built better that wouldn't have been as much of an issue but it wasn't built for trucks in the first place.

I couldn’t find the right thread for this but a bit of good news for the week:

“Perth’s Virgin Australia lounge was transformed into a rainbow paradise on Friday as passengers boarded the first-ever “pride flight” on their way to the world’s biggest annual gay and lesbian celebration.

The party started early for those West Aussies heading to Sydney for this weekend’s WorldPride.

Drag queens, DJs, makeup artists, and even some famous LGBTIQA+ faces were in the crowd, including former AFL player Dani Laidley and her partner Donna Leckie.”
Not much but great for Dani

You want to ride on the road because you want to go faster even though it means everyone else using the road has to then go slower? And you think cyclists aren’t entitled?

And my truck regos are a shit load more than a car rego for that exact reason.

My thoughts on cyclists on main busy roads. Sure it is legal but imo you are risking serious damage to yourself, people often don’t see you . Also motorcyclists they can accelerate and get clear but I can’t believe I still see many without leathers on . I think they forget the consequences if they come off.

Blokes riding powerful bikes without kit - pseudo motorcyclists. Had a mate who raced Aus.wide years ago who lived in the country. Drove him mad blokes getting around on country roads in;
. T-shirt
. Shorts
. Thongs

Being an A&E emergency nurse he saw the inevitable consequences sadly.

You need to let it go and accept that riding bikes on roads is another sign of privilege in this Country.

47% of regular cyclists have family trusts compared to 9% for regular car drivers which means lugs like you and I are paying more tax to make up the shortfall in the revenue base caused by this tax minimisation device.

35% of cyclists own on average two investments properties or more compared to 10% of car drivers which means they continue to enrich themselves through regressive policies such as negative gearing which in turns means, yep you guessed it, lugs like you and I have tip more into government coffers. Not to mention, of course, that our children are forced to live in a shitty rental 40km outside the CBD because rents are so high because of the housing stock being snapped up by this crew.

You might want to think about breaking out the Lycra just quietly.
