The league introduced a rule that they can remove someone from the Hall of Fame for conduct which brings the AFL, the Hall of Fame inductee, any AFL club or Australian football into disrepute.

Even though the outcome of the trial was a civil and not criminal, the judged found Cable to be guilty and he couldn't remain an icon of football without it bringing disrepute.

I don't think the AFL or my club will retrospectively go back in time and review everyone's misdeeds, but you wouldn't want to be getting convictions or civil suits for things like this in current times. Clubs can't afford to even look like they condone sexual predators, it will cost a lot in terms of corporate support, they don't want to partner with organisations that look like they condone that kind of behaviour.
no one wants to condone it but its pretty simplistic to just say barry cable is an outcast. IF this wasnt done by him then they would be saying what a legend he is. The point is as far as a football player and in regard to the fc he is still a legend. You can seperate the 2 if you want and clubs should. As i said, the law is there to punish people, and people shouldnt thrown rocks especially if they dwell in glass houses. The problem is i gaurantee you there will be others like this that dont get the same treatment because there are other issues involved and when you hear crickets like that you can only shake your head.

I'm personally okay if we aren't celebrating a paedophile.

It will be interesting, some of the media giants would take a massive hit and some of the smaller ones will be up against it to survive.
Yes will be very interesting to see how it all unfolds. They new it was coming though, and not before time, it's the modern day equivalent of cigarette sponsorship.

I think you've misread that; a ban on all forms of advertising for online gambling…
Sorry, I phrased it poorly. What I was getting at was that it ignores non online gambling. ie. Doesn't seem to be a ban on retail / site based gambling advertising.

When cigarette advertising/sponsorship was banned these giants(mainly print media) were making squillions through other sources of advertising.

This could be the final nail in print media.

Okay, I understand.

I know multiple families brought to their knees due to teenage family members having sever gambling problems that started & continued with apps like Sportsbet & Ladbrokes.

It is a HUGE problem in Australian society right now. A little ‘gamble responsibly’ tag line at the end of a TV ad does sweet **** all.

I still don’t think it’s talked about enough either. Often, alike most addictions, purely because people are embarrassed to admit they have/had a problem.

So the ‘media giants’ can eat a dick.

You’re probably right.

I love the idea of getting a newspaper with my coffee Sunday morning, but I sit down, open it up & it’s literally yesterdays news. Unfortunately (for newspapers) we are getting our information in real time now.

Pokies, sportsbet and such I put it in the same category of addictions as Ice and Heroin. ****ing destroys

I don't think there would be many people in the country that haven't seen the impact of gambling on a family member, friend or sombody they know.

True, and the companies that once made their money of print still haven't found a way to make anywhere near the same money off digital.

It's going to be an interesting time if this goes through.

I haven't bought a newspaper in years. Laughed when I saw that a slim copy of the ad-filled Sunday Age now costs $4.50.
