I always wondered why the team fell of the perch in that final against *. We were convinced there was something wrong. One blinding quarter and three disgusting efforts.

I actually thought we were a better side in ‘82 with Blight and Carman kicking 130 goals between them.

I just think ‘83 was an average year all round, hence we somehow managed to finish top.

A very even year with little separating the Top 5. Each of the other finalists had beaten us during the year with Fitzroy giving us two hidings and they went out unluckily in straight sets. We had a bit of downhill skier about us and our best footy deserted us badly when it counted. Went into '84 with more or less the same list and were lucky to avoid the spoon.

Cable got me thinking about 1983, and I wanted to ask does anyone know why we don't have our McClelland trophies displayed in our trophy cabinet?
Wasn’t the McLelland trophy based on your combined VFL, Reserves and U19 results back in those days?
Or is this a figment of my imagination? (I was a kid!)

That goal against Carlton in the dying minutes…WOW!!!

Pity he turned his back on us
He didn't do much after he left, was injured for a lot of the time. His best years were with us.

What hurt us was we used his compo pick on Williams who got cut after just 2 years and delivered SFA.

There was no middle ground in that draft. Either absolute guns (Simpkin, Larkey, Zurhaar) or they did nothing (Watson, Williams, Junker, M Taylor).

Our infatuation with the Queensland academy thankfully ended after that.

I was sitting with a mate directly in line behind that kick... riding it home all the way.

Peter Ryan in the Age - says that this weekend, Elliot’s goal was better than Houston’s (and no one ever wins goal of the year because they kicked after the siren, timing doesn’t come into it), but neither of them were as good as Ashcroft‘s or C Cameron’s, and neither of THEM is as good as the best goal kicked this year, by Paul Curtis.

NORTH MELBOURNE

The Roos put up a fight at stages but were ultimately overpowered and outmatched by the Crows as their losing streak extended to 13 games. As tough as the Adelaide road trip is, it marked North‘s biggest loss under caretaker coach Brett Ratten and worst performance in general in some time, getting well beaten in the midfield and consistently scored against when the ball went into defence. The good news though is that Alastair Clarkson will begin to transition back into the role of senior coach this week with an eye on resuming full duties by season’s end.

In the votes

Harry Sheezel (31 touches) continues to shine in an otherwise tough year for the Roos, while fellow 2022 draftee George Wardlaw (22 disposals, seven tackles) has also shown great signs for the future. Bailey Scott is also going under the radar in a solid campaign on the wing, with another strong showing with 24 disposals, seven marks and a goal.

Room for improvement

Too many Roos stars were down in form on the day including Luke Davies-Uniacke, who‘s somewhat of a spiritual leader for the club and its best player, and co-captain Jy Simpkin. Fox Footy pundits were also critical of the Roos’ experienced backline, saying the senior players’ poor skill and ill-discipline let down the younger players and showing worrying vision of poor positioning.

Can anyone find different commentary of the Curtis goal ?
