Coney Island Warriors 19.6 (120) defeat Las Vegas Bears 14.13 (97)

The Las Vegans (which as you will have figured by now is Spanish for The Vegans) came to visit in round six. Sitting towards the top of the ladder after featuring in a Grand Final last season, the Bears were up and about and had a pretty well established lineup of internet personalities which made the week fly by. The fact that it started late on Tuesday Friday 5 helped, however not as many of us got the chance to come in and say hello. Many of those that did though donned tin foil hats in a symbolic gesture in our struggle against simulator oppression symbolic of our struggle against reality, along with renaming ourselves as both the Aardvarks and the Crayons. Would these tactics work?

The first 12 minutes of the match would say no, as the visitors kicked the first three goals of the match. We responded in kind and by the end of the first quarter the Vegans were seven points up. That lead extended to 11 at the half and a close defeat looked like it was again on the cards.

Hold the fort!

The third quarter is colloquially known as 'the premiership quarter'. Means nothing to us for obvious reasons, but we did manage to turn the tide of this match by kicking five goals to two in this period of the match, and followed it up with a seven goal to four final stanza to salute to the tune of 23 points in a champagne performance of straight kicking (19.6 to be exact). This was our second win in six matches this season and our second of the past ten, which saw us climb two spots on the ladder.

The tin foil hats stayed for now!

Sophomore rover Ocha905 was best on for us with a 24 disposal/9 tackle/4 frees for/1 goal performance, closely followed in the midfield by Piggy Smalls (23 disposals/5 marks/3 goals), TheInjuryFactory (28 disposals/3 marks) & pantskyle (20 disposals/5 tackles). The Filth Wizard kicked five goals for the second week in a row while Raveneyes matched Piggy's three goal haul and Reginald Perrin (2) was the other multiple goal kicker.

Fighting Furies 18.12 (120) defeat Coney Island Warriors 13.12 (90)

It was round seven, and we travelled to the hippodrome to play a Furies side sitting at the bottom of the ladder which says danger game. We were also celebrating the milestone of pantskyle becoming the sixteenth Life Member of Coney Island, which shouts danger game. It's a milestone season, which absolutely bellows danger game.

The Furies themselves don't say danger though. They're a good bunch, even the disastrous one.

Speaking of disastrous ones, game day arrived. Cloudy conditions mean big scores, and a five goal to four first quarter in our favour was looking aright early doors. Those doors quickly shut though, as the hosts kicked a further 14 goals for the match to our 8 to see us lose our 8th game in the last 10 by 30 points. This saw us drop back down to 12th on the ladder, but an impending points penalty due the fridge door being left open brings us back a spot.

The milestone orangutan pantskyle was best on for us, racking up 25 disposals, 8 tackles & 2 goals. Others to impress were some of those that were shuffled around the ground including Reginald Perrin (23 disposals/6 marks/2 tackles/1 goal), Paracleet (20 disposals/16 hitouts/1 goal in his second week in a row rucking), Stokey (23 disposals/4 marks/2 tackles) & toxic (23 disposals/5 marks/1 goal). Mofra kicked 4 goals & The Filth Wizard kicked 3, while both Freofalcon (20 disposals/6 marks/4 tackles) & Purple7x08_24 (20 disposals/9 marks) had plenty of it in the half back line.

Coney Island Warriors 17.5 (107) defeated by West Coast Wonders 22.20 (152)

After a brief winning respite the round prior we came home in round eight after losing to the Furies, where we were hosting a Wonders team who despite a revolving door to the captain's lounge seem to enjoy the rub of the simulated green, particularly against us (winning 9 of the last 13 meetings). There wasn't as much argy bargy in the match thread as in previous seasons either, which is partly due to the aforementioned leadership changes and partly due to the state of the league nowadays.

Game day then came and went before anyone noticed. A match was posted and, in a surprise to absolutely nobody, the result saw the visitors come home with a wet sail after three pretty even quarters to finish up 45 points in the black. Because who doesn't love another week of good old fashioned simhousery right?

The 11th loss in our last 13 matches sees us on the same spot on the ladder, with the only thing keeping us off the bottom is the forgetfulness of other captains.

There were a few highlights out of the game. The Filth Wizard kicked six goals which is the most this season for him while zackah (3) & Raveneyes (2) also kicked multiple goals. Quite a few players racked up touches, with FootyGuy13 (26) Purple7x08_24 (26) TubbsFarquhar (23) TheInjuryFactory (20) Piggy Smalls (19) Dinsdale (17) Ocha905 (17) Paracleet (16) Freofalcon (16) & oldmate (30) all amongst it.

    Two absolute stalwarts of Coney Island became the 15th and 16th Life Members of the club in season 37. They have both won plenty of stuff but this is something they have earned, which is pretty much the single greatest accolade that anybody in Sweet can earn. So charge your glasses Wazzas and give it up for Dinsdale and pantskyle!!!!!

    Gumbies FFC 13.14 (92) defeated by Coney Island Warriors 17.14 (116)

    It was round ten, and a trip to the House of Gumby awaited us. As you would no doubt be aware the plasticine people are the reigning premiers, thanks in no small part to the 102-point pantsing we rained down upon them the last time we visited (which also precipitated our now-familiar losing streak). They were also celebrating dual Life Membership admission of the iconic beez and the idolatrous GWS Goose so they were looking for a big week. There was whining, there was dining, and there was a Poo Jogger. Quite the trifecta!

    And then there was a game of qooty. The first quarter ended up pretty much square before a seven goal to four second term saw us take a 15 point lead to the sheds at half time. The third quarter ended up pretty much square before a four goal to three final term, when coupled with that 15 point half time lead, saw us four goals to the good at the final siren. Therefore, in an unexpected turn of events, we won a game which moved us from 12th to 11th on the ladder.

    I think this was the only round so far where all three of the starting on-ball division remained in their starting positions for the duration of the game and it showed, as pantskyle (27 disposals/7 tackles) Ocha905 (20 disposals/1 goal/also 7 tackles) and oldmate (25 disposals/13 hitouts/1 goal/also also 7 tackles) made proverbial hay while the simulated sun shined. Others to impress were Piggy Smalls (25 disposals/9 marks), Reginald Perrin (20 disposals/5 marks/1 goal), toxic (18 disposals/6 marks), TheInjuryFactory (18 disposals/1 goal), Purple7x08_24 (14/disposals/5 marks/1 goal) & Paracleet (16 disposals/4 marks/2 tackles off the bench), while the damage up front was wreaked by zackah (4 goals), Mofra (3 goals), Snuffaluphagus (3 goals in his first run for the season) & The Filth Wizard (2 goals).

    Coney Island Warriors 4.10 (34) defeated by Gold City Royals 13.7 (85)

    Round 11 saw us at home. We were hosting the Gold City Royals, who were also having an average season but slightly better than ours, so for all intents and purposes we should have been evenly matched. We contributed roughly the same amount to the week, although the Monarchists boasted about not one but two (2) world records - one about shirtfronting bowling pins and the other about something guts did with ping pong balls. Whatever, it was more than anyone else ever so that's something I guess.

    We then got to game day, which is now more of a fluid concept than conventionally calibrated measurement of time. You see Harry Potter told us that we would be playing a bit later than usual. It began at 10pm Vicbias time, 8pm Weag time and Monday Friday 4 morning Tonga time. That makes it four different times over four different rounds. One of those rounds was a bye but still.     There was a five minute period early in the first quarter in muddy conditions where we led courtesy of a The Filth Wizard goal, and a rushed behind saw us lead again until the 10.40 minute mark. The visitors then kicked five goals straight and we kicked five behinds straight. Then it got ugly, and by the time it was all over the visitors had kicked another eight goals to our three. They won by PLENTY, our final score of 4.10 was the equal second lowest in history with only a goal from spudmaster halfway through the final quarter saving us from an all-time scoring nadir. What a way to end a weekend.

    The result left us stone motherless thanks to a Babylonian victory. Even the team with an 8 point penalty for not being good at telling the time was higher. How good's qooty?

    Coney Island Warriors 20.12 (132) defeat East Side Haeks 12.7 (79)

    We were still at home after the muddy horrors of round 11, hoping for better weather and the rub of the green from our favourite virtual tamagotchi. Our hosts in round 12 were the recently unbranded East Side Hawks, who have done a sterling job of both reclaiming their identity and refreshing their list. This made for a pretty enjoyable week, but then again Tarks is an enjoyable fella. We even dusted off a few of our old codgers in Frankston Rover Lord_Flashheart and Smoooothy to give them a run.

    And then before your knew it, game day crept up on us AND it was back at the traditional time slot so things were looking up. When the aforementioned tamagotchi broke the fourth wall and decided to simhouse in real life, it must have returned with its blood lust sated because we got what we hoped for in better weather and the rub of the green. I know that we traditionally do alright against the East Siders, but this game was the first one in a long time where we won all four quarter - leading by a point at quarter time, 19 points at half time, 27 points at three quarter time and saluting at the final fat lady warble to the tune of 53 points. Plus it was a mileston game with Purple7x08_24 bringing up his 50th game. This was our biggest win in over a season and was reminiscent of the highlighted round in Coney Island History (yes the winning margin was less than half of the 125 points of season 30 but it was still pretty bloody good).

    The result, coupled with losses to the Furies & Bombers, saw us climb of the bottom of the ladder and into a more comforting 11th position.

    pantskyle is in a rich vein of form, pulling out his third 100+DT point performance in the past five rounds thanks to 27 disposals, 8 tackles and 3 goals. Reginald Perrin (21 disposals/6 marks/4 tackles/3 goals) was the other to crack the ton, his first since round 2 last season. Others to do well include Piggy Smalls (25 disposals/6 marks/2 goals), Ocha905 (18 disposals/3 tackles/2 goals), spudmaster (19 disposals/2 goals) & The Filth Wizard (4 goals). Probably the first time in ages where we've had 10 individual goal scorers too!
