Certified Legendary Thread CONFIRMED: Welcome to Hawthorn, Shaun Burgoyne

A question.

If Burgoyne plays the season out without injury, he'll end up having play more games with Hawthorn. How do you guys view him, as a Hawthorn player that played with Port, or a Port player that is at Hawthorn?

He said his kids only know Hawthorn. I think that is him declaring his club.

And we know he was unhappy when he left Port.

I was looking at his official club profile. It seems like we could have had him straight off the bat:

Draft history: 2000 National AFL Draft 1st round selection (Port Adelaide) No. 12 overall on-traded by Hawthorn to Adelaide for Matthew Bode and No. 48 (Matthew Smith);

We gave up pick 12 for a broken down Rhen??? What the heck were our recruiters doing back then??

Re: For anyone interested in Burgoyne's detailed statistics...

Raw disposal stats mean nothing...otherwise Bowden and Kornes would be the two greatest players in history. Burgoynes career disposal rate is down due to the fact he spent two years playing at FF, and two years playing as a shut down defender before moving into the midfield. That and the fact that Port dont really play a high possession gameplan/

Burgoyne has a high rate of contested possesions because he wins it in close. He has a high rate of clearances because he can read the ruckman as good as anyone in the league (he IS as good as Judd at this). His modus operandi is to win the clearance, have a 25 metre run and bounce and kick long inside 50. He has led the league in disposal efficiency before (2006). Hes a goalkicker and has kicked multiple goals playing from the midfield many times. These are the stats that mean something.

First Port supporter who posted in this thread in 2009. IMO he new him well.:thumbsu:

To be fair Rehn was pretty good while he was with us even if he was a shell of his former self.

We gave up two high picks for two injury prone gun footballers from South Australia. Luckily one worked out brilliantly :thumbsu:

We gave up pick 12 for a guy after he had 3 knee reconstructions on the back of a poor season at the crows and he only managed 33 games for the club across two seasons. His first season was decent but his second was only just a season and he retired with nothing left in the tank. It's not like we could have believed he had 5 seasons left in him. He was 30 with three acls under his belt! We should have got him for a third rounder and a Christmas card!

We paid overs for Rehn but we had such a poor record of developing rucks we really had no choice.

By comparison, Burgers was an absolute steal. It may have sounded like overs at the time but we cleaned up big time with him. His contribution to our last 3 flags cannot be overstated.

When the history of this club is written Shaun Burgoyne will need a special chapter just about him and his ability to play the biggest most huge game in the most pivotal clutch moments of the most telling matches. Hodge is a great leader - Mitchell sublimely skilled - Rioli is a freak of Nature - and Rough is the most versatile big man going around BUT if you need someone to get your team through a big moment in a big game - its going to be Shaun Burgoyne the ultimate "in case of emergency break glass" player and the best recruit from another club Hawthorn has ever seen

I don't remember Rehn being that good with us at all to be honest?

He was pretty inconsistent. Was never going to reach the level pre-injury but he had some handy games.

Definitely wasn't worth what we paid for. We havn't exactly been blessed with ruckmen in our history. Just honest battlers is all we need.

My memories of Rehn are mostly of him going to the bench for a rest and Nathan Thompson going into the ruck and turning the game in our favor.

Not much has changed in developing rucks

I posted this in the Match preview thread but it probably belongs here instead....

This weekend Burgoyne draws level in games played for his Port Adelaide and Hawthorn (157 at each). Who would have seen that happening back in 2009?

Several people on this board thought he wouldn't have close considering some didn't want to trade for a player on one leg and all.
