It is definitely up there with essendon 1984. I still remember that final siren in 2012... One of the worst feelings in my life and I'm just a lunatic supporter. The players have clearly never let it go... Rioli still talked about it even after the three peat. Huge respect for the group. Fremantle and Sydney have now not managed to bounce back.

I think the difference was the Hawks in 2012 GF dominated every (well maybe most) aspect of the game but missed so many opportunities to kick goals. Compare that to the 3-peat GF's, Hawks have smashed their opponents and kicked straight.

i can't speak before 1982 as i was too young, however since then the 4 worst losses in Hawthorns history in order are:

1…..1984 grand final

2….daylight

3….2012 grand final

4…2011 preliminary final

My favorite recruit by Hawthorn with the exception of Hodge and Rioli.

Bloody star. I do not remember him messing up ever when the pressure is on. He is such an absolute star of our team.

I hope he will remembered now as a Hawk more so than a Power player...

Either way this Burgoyne trade will cost us a premiership.

Why?

1.) Our pick 9 has been tied down the entire trade period. Fortuitiously Darren Jolly wanted to come back to Melbourne. Yet we could do nothing because our pick 9 has been tied down to a player who may or may not even come to Hawthorn. Our moral obligation to Shaun Burgoyne rightly or wrongly has meant we could not move on Jolly. It would truly be a dog act to ditch Burgoyne when he has done absolutely everything possible to get to us. But the fact remains Hawthorn with Jolly is a better team than Hawthorn with Burgoyne

2.) Port Adelaide's pig headedness has meant that the uncertainty with our picks translates into us not being able to deal for another quality ruckman. All our resources have been directed towards this one trade. And yet we run the risk of going into 2010 with only 2 possible ruck choices both of whom are of questionable level.

Now it isn't Pelchen's fault that Robbie Campbell had to retire for he couldnt have seen this coming when he had SB in his sights many months ago. But still I believe this week's events will affect us very negatively when we reflect on it at the end of next year or even the year beyond that.

Happy for Junior Burger. Just hope we can stop the 4-peat like we did to Brisbane.

A question.

If Burgoyne plays the season out without injury, he'll end up having play more games with Hawthorn. How do you guys view him, as a Hawthorn player that played with Port, or a Port player that is at Hawthorn?

As a great champion of our club.

He's already a hawk who played with port

1 moment defines careers

For Burgoyne, it was that kick vs Geelong in 2013

I admit that despite Burgoyne being one of my very favorite players outside of Hawthorn at the time we traded for him, I thought we should have gone for Jolly. I believed we desperately needed a quality ruck.

There, I said it. Finally got my hidden shame off my chest... I've been holding on to that for far too long.

A little from column A and a little from column B. An impartial observer would recognise the extra premierships at Hawthorn as the tie breaker. However, he will still be remembered at Port Adelaide as one of ours given the family connection, coming through the Maggies as a junior, and being an inaugural premiership player with the Power. We still consider Nathan Buckley a Port boy and he never played a game with us at AFL level.

The concerted booing by Port fans may indicate otherwise.

I have to say they boo pretty well in unison!

In fairness to CaptainHodgey, at the time no expected to get more than a few years service from Burgoyne and that was if he stayed fit. By the end of 2012 we still hadn't won another flag and, considering the ruck division was never a strong point for us in this time, maybe Jolly could have been the difference.

In saying all that, Burgoyne is sublime and we are ridiculously blessed as supporters to have bore witness to his time in the brown and gold.
