Congratulations Adam Cooney 2008 Brownlow Medalist

Hird should never have won it.

Grant was CLEARLY best on ground in round 22 that year, but missed the votes. Should have been outright winner.

Well done Cooney, deserved winner IMO, watching the highlights each round of Ablett roaming packs waiting for seagull possessions makes me wonder why he's so highly rated, give me a workman like player over a flashy "hey handball to me im behind you" player anyday.

Well done Adam Cooney, worthy winner after a blistering start to 2008 and being amongst the favourites for the award.

Funny how some Geelong fans don't like the fact he won after playing his best footy for the first half of the year then tapering off slightly, yet would have been perfectly happy if Bartel, who did probably the opposite had won. Ditto Ablett who as good as he was didn't even play for 4 weeks.

Bottom line, the guy played well enough to earn the required votes to win, and if he did it in half a season, good luck to him.

Since when does the "best" player for the year win the Brownlow, hardly ever. Adam Cooney is just as a deserving winner as Goodes, Bartel, Black, Ricciuto etc. Had a blinding first 12 games and polled in some games that was unexpected but that happens every year.

Would have been great to see Richo tie with the Coondog,

One of either Ablett, Harvey or Bartel should've won. The fact that only one of them made the top 5 and their places being filled by the likes of Goodes and Black clearly shows how flawed the system is.

A DISGRACEFUL BROWNLOW VOTING YEAR BY THE UMPS!!!
:thumbsu:

Well I didn't see a game this year but congrats to Adam Cooney.

Ablett may have to seek counseling from Scott West in the future perhaps?

... and what went down the Bartel? the umpires all set the bar higher for him or something? season wasn't too indifferent from 2007 with the same supporting cast... surely last year made them think twice before filling out the cards each round.

Bryce Gibbs is the real winner I'd say after viewing the photos

You lost me at Harvey................. the worst seagull in the AFL.

Anyway congrats to Cooney, he was not the best player but since when does the best player win the Brownlow.

Used to share your sentiments but I think it is a good system.

The guys you mention play great games, do amazing things most weeks, the media get a hold of them, they gain huge reputations, media exposure, the media and bookies pick them to win... and it grows on top of itself to a point where it doesn't make sense if they don't.

Cooney may not be the leagues best player but he was obviously their about the top on the field every week and highly valuable to his teams success this year... making him the most valuable player this year.

Very deserved winner.
All this crap about Woewodin like performances is a joke.

Polled well in the games he was expected to poll well in.
Was a favourite mid season.
Was 5-6th favourite going in to the count.
All Australian and will go close in the B&F.

Ablett, Bartel, Harvey all had sensational years. Anyone of them with Cooney would have deserved it.

I can't believe the sour grapes from everyone on here, Geelong supporters especially. You guys are playing in a GF for God's sake and you're worried about not winning a Brownlow (which you won last year anyway). They'd be supporters of 14 other clubs happy to be in your position right now.

I think no one for a second thinks Cooney is the best player in the AFL, but his circumstances meant he was able to win the award (ie; plays in a team that won games, teamates didn't vote well and Ablett missed games) but he is a #1 draft pick and can play, in fact he would get a game in any side's starting 18, Geelong included, so show the guy some respect.

He is better than Hardie, Woewodin, etc who had the one good year and the average years afterwards. He will be a gun in the AFL for the next 5 years.

Half a dozen players would have been worthy winners, Cooney being one of them, congratulations to him, a fine player who had a fine year.:thumbsu:

I thought Quarterbrains interview was a disgrace. but Cooney's acceptance kept it real.

Re: Congratulations Adam Coney 2008 Brownlow Medalist

Well done to Adam on a great year. Great player, worthy winner but..

C'mon. There were obviously others who deserved it over him. Can you honestly say hes had the best year of any other player?

Nonetheless, congratulations, Cooney.

EDIT: Also, the genuine, natural speech from Cooney was a credit to him :thumbsu:

Re: Congratulations Adam Coney 2008 Brownlow Medalist

As a Bulldog supporter I know that nobody else every watches our players. Like that thread about Lake being a good defender last week. Well he won out B&F last year, a freakish thing to do for a full back but nobody form any other club recognised until we played ina pre-lim.

Chris Grant topped the Brownlow medal count from CHB. Something I don't think has ever been done, he also beat Robert Harvey that year and played almost as many games over all but people outside of the Bulldogs don't recognize him as the great he was.

Chris Grant was sensational... for a few seasons, he played about 5-6 seasons too long or at least not worthy of his hype. The year he "won" the brownlow over Harvey, '97, I felt Grant was the correct winner of the brownlow.

I was not saying Cooney did not have a very good season but what I am saying is that there is no way he was the best & fairest player in the competition. It's shades of Shane Woewodin.

Incidentally I watch every game possible, I'm not saying my opinion is better than anyone elses but it is simply my opinion.

I don't think too many cats fans are angry at the fact that Cooney won. The main reason some angst is felt lies purely with the decisions of the umpires in several games where Bartel failed to poll (the same applies with Hodge).

Before jumping all over Geelong supporters, just realise that it is very frustrating watching players like Goodes and Black poll in games where they definately should not do so. In 2007, I remember Black polled 3 votes when he had 16 disposals against Richmond. It is the umpires love affair with certain players that causes such frustration

Well done to Cooney, along with about 5 others, a very deserving winner. Now lets just be at peace and stop the arguing and look forward to the GF!

Re: Congratulations Adam Coney 2008 Brownlow Medalist

Good lord.

The way Essendon people carry on about the likes of Long and Fletcher - as footballers not Cooney's arseh*le if Cooney's arseh*le was an exact DNA match of Long holding hands with Fletcher - if Cooney played for the Bombers he'd be the greatest player to have lived.

In fact, a spankfest to rival the deification of Hird would have erupted the moment he won, that much is undeniable.

A bit of a generalisation don't you think? Who are these Essendon people you are speaking of? You don't know me, have you read any of my posts?

How would you like it if I said all Port Adelaide supporters were living on the dole or were sweeping up factory floors? Perhaps you should just base your comments on what I have posted, give me a basis as to why i'm wrong otherwise sod off!
