I did say no biggie if delisted. He's no longer first 22, and let's face it will probably never make it.

Just querying why others are frothing over him getting a one year extension when TB is gone and we lack mature bodies on the list.
Because he isn't even close to similar to TB. Barrass replacement as far as depth goes is a fit Bazzo .

I thought Rotham being delisted would be a formality

If Daniels is right that he’s a chance to get a new contract I can only assume McQualter has spoken to him and sees a potential role for Rotham. Given Rotham does actually possess some athleticism a new game plan that focuses on speed might suit him

Maybe a new coach can unlock the potential he showed earlier in his career that became stymied under our kick mark game.

A bit like the way Sheppard had a new lease on life under Simpson with a better defined role

Probably puts a line through Witherden as I can’t see us retaining both

Wouldn't stretch the imagination too much to think Mini made it a priority to meet with anyone OOC who was looking elsewhere to assess whether he should encourage the move or sell them the vision of how they fit in. Rotham may have earned himself a reprieve for 12 months to play a different position or in a different game plan. He looked a likely type early on

McQualters game style of fast movement will require players with good leg speed and good footskills, traits both of which Rotham has in spades.

I personally thought he was badly coached and was puzzled that he was never developed to be a wingman.

His deer in the headlights stuff, moving the ball out of the back half of the ground was the key frustration for me about his game.
As was his obsession to pass the ball sideways and backwards.

He simple didn’t take the game on.

When I knew Mini was to be the coach I though that Rothams skill set might earn him a reprieve.

Therefore I won’t be surprised if he is retained.

Wouldn’t be my first choice, but that’s how it might pan out.

The players on our list, no yet signed, with poor leg speed and low endurance, would IMO be the ones most at risk.

Culley was the clear best option in that mid season draft, not even close.

Problem is he appears to have a bit of a limited ceiling, either due to pace or ability to find the footy at AFL level.

State level he seems more than capable. I feel like he has to make it as a mid, if he makes it at all. Should just turn him into a tagger IMO. Let his opponent lead him to the footy if he's struggling to find it himself.

I hope you guys aren't getting your hopes up that Richmond will now offer us a favourable deal to get back into the draft.

The quid pro quo was upgrading Freo's 18 to 14, so they could get 10 and 11.

Now we have a pick before Fremantle and can take Allan (who they were keen on).

Yes it sucks, but it makes sense if you look at it logically.

What's the bet, the AFL give Hawks the god draw next yr, gift them finals and shaft us.

They finished top six, so their most likely double ups are to come from Brisbane, Sydney, Port, Dogs and Geelong.

Last year they doubled up against the Crows, Kangaroos, Magpies, Dogs, Giants, and Cats. So hopefully that means they'll double up against the Lions, Swans and Port, given that the did the double against Cats and Dogs this year.

Guess we'll know how much they are being protected if they get to double up against the Vic sides instead of getting on a plane once in a while

If being a bumbling fool wasn’t enough Clarke is now also a hypocrite. After a train wreck trade period he has the audacity to say we shouldn’t zero in on a player. Achieved zero goals that any person with half a brain would have set. Doesn’t deserve the time or support to turn the tide, Matthew Clarke should be frog marched out of Mineral Resources Park today.

I don’t mind not saying what we really want or who our targets are publicly.. only an idiot would be speaking openly when there is still 12 months of his contract to go ..

If we were still under Simmo and Rotham was still on the list then I'd be infinitely more pissed. But since we got a new coach who wants to bring in a new game style I don't mind if McQualter wants to keep him on for another year to see how he fares. I got no idea how many players we need to delist or how many list spaces we need to free up, I'm just saying in a vacuum I'm not fussed about him staying on for one more year.

As far as the pick swap period, I don't really care. After all the horseshit of the last week and a half I'm shutting my list manager brain off until the new year. Have at it, lads.

Even if Warner re-signs or wants a trade to Freo then who cares, just use the picks in the draft, last time I checked there's a draft every year. It's not do or die if we lose out on him.

I know a lot of people aren't happy with the line "we recruited just as much for the off-field traits" but the off-field stuff is culture defining and has a big influence on and off the field and is often the back bone for building a premiership team.
This. Not much point bringing in even more youth ('stars' - ???) if the culture is crap e.g. last season's picking and choosing was a bad sign. As we already have a very large bunch of possibles, arguably, we'll do better if we can get them nearer their potential than we will bringing even more kids into a crap setting. Then the closer games might be wins. And the bollockings might be close games.

So if we can get more out of Dewar, Hutch, Long, Maric, Hall, Hewett, BWilliams, Ginbey, Chesser, JWilliams, Hough, Bazzo, HEdwards and maybe a few others, that means we will be a significantly better team.

The other part of course is having a credible WAFL team where fringe players can actually develop instead of just being whipping boys. And, if the gap between Eagles and Beagles isn't as great as now then dropping e.g. Kelly or Sheed wouldn't be such a big deal.

Man, I remember when Culley was getting Harley-lite hype when we had Pick 1 in the MSD.

Dark Sharks deleted his account over him.

Wild times.
The AFL/media has made the MSD a bit of a circus. Creating hype and excitement about who the best prospects are is pretty engaging during the season when the right pick might fill a needed list gap.

Fact is it's just not as reliable as the national draft - by far. The best talent is taken then. The MSD is really not much different to the rookie draft - there will be some diamonds in the rough, but few and far between.

Culley was seen as the best prospect in that draft year - had shown massive improvement over 12 months and was on an upwards trajectory. But how that translates to AFL isn't certain.

I see him more as medium forward/utility at AFL level - unforch that's a position we're well covered in. Would like to be proven wrong though & have him become a defensive mid.

MSD selections are players that never got drafted in the real draft. They for the most part will be to fill your seconds team.

After interest from multiple clubs including
@essendonfc
, now a growing possibilty Josh Rotham will remain with
@WestCoastEagles
. The defender is currently out of contract.

Im hoping that Rotham may improve playing this faster game style plan playing on instinct.. He would be one player that would benefit under a new coach..

The pick swap sucks.

3 for 12 + 14 is basically even on points - which overrates the value of later picks - for a trade between two clubs with no FS/academy considerations.

For picks in this year's draft I would've considered:

3, 26 for 7, 8
3 for 15, 16, 21
3, F1 for 5, 9

We needed pick 3 to be more than a pick outside the top 10 and Baker.

I'm not saying I would have done it, but once again, it did allow us to keep a pick closer to Bakers value which we would have otherwise lost. That is really important. At least to me, as I think Baker is a great pick up.

Well interesting that some see hope for Rotham under a new game style. I am not completely closed to the idea but its a stretch.
The three solid players we bring in look to be possibly a back, mid and forward? Who loses a spot to them? Probably not youth as we have now injected experience.

I think given that once again we have refused to address the barren wasteland that is the midfield with more top end talent then we need to look inward to try and find support for Reid.

Hewett spends the preseason training purely as a mid and improves his tank to play as a fulltime onballer
Long transitions to be that skillful midget midfielder - get him to watch Lachie Neale tapes. Dewar/Owies can fill his small forward spot
Hutchinson works on being a mid/fwd with lots of minutes on ball
Get Chesser off the gimp wing and try him on ball for full games in the WAFL first
Pick 3 Pick 12 needs to be a midfielder. Not a flanker who projects as maybe being a midfielder.

Hopefully one at least or maybe two of those work out.

Is the wing midfield? I would say yes it is.

Because chances are Lindsay at 12>14 is where he drops.

Just after Travagalia. 12ish.

Trainor may slide and fall around that spot.

And possibly Bo Allan.

For a pure mid at that range we will need a slider or we will be reaching.
