The thing is, I'm not convinced we would get anywhere near the quality of player you think we would.

Robertson is no better than XON. People on here are hung up on him because they wanted him drafted 5 years ago, ignoring that he just hasn't come on. Rivers on the other hand is a best 22 player at a premiership contender. Why is he agreeing to come to us?

I'm not saying the Norf-like compo would have zero value, because it clearly wouldn't. I just don't think it's what we need.
I would like the AFL to offer us a bespoke compo offer, maybe give access to Livingstone pre-40th pick? It wouldn't be a free player or even an extra draft pick, as we'd still have to match bids. But it's a 25% discounted leg up.
People like Robertson because people like the idea of having that one player that comes back and becomes a star just because we are eagles.

No one would give two *hits if he was from any other state and wouldn’t be rated. Any rumour of a Robertson of Victoria playing in saints reserves who is slow to us would be met with anger on how this plodder would fit under a run and gun game plan.

But doesn’t matter, he is west Aussie so must be good. I thought it was freo who was desperate for any west Australian to come back and join them. We are now the same.

why dont the eagles place a player on the long term injury list and get another player in the mid season draft

Should North land a compo pick for Ben McKay they will likely have pick 4 and two other 1sts.

If we ever entertain trading pick 1 we want a top 5 pick coming back plus plenty more.

Pick 4 front runners atm is one of Moir, Dursma or Watson. Or the bolter who is about to make a late run. And as history shows the best player isnt always pick 1 but are often top 5 or 6.

Its one way to get more talant in quicker.

Not the only way.

How Harley progresses and interviews over the next four months will be attracting plenty of interest and speculation..
I'm not sure Moir and Duursma are in the top 4 at the moment.

By and large the most of the top names going in to this season have had underwhelming seasons to date.

Reid has maintained his position, and Watson has been putting in the performances, but Moir and Duursma haven't. I'd probably have Colby McKercher and Darcy Wilson in my top 4 atm, but I haven't seen any SANFL or WAFL colts.

McKercher is underrated at current. His movement reminds me of Pendelbury, just looks like he glides around with the ball and has abundance of time. Could've had 31 and 5 on the weekend. That sounds like Daicos and Ashcroft numbers in the Futures League. I'd be drooling more over the proposition of Reid or McKercher dilemma than the Moir option.

Yeah he’s good. He’s been good all year just takes time for people to notice. He’s definitely in the top 7 conversation. He’s the second best mid in the draft behind Reid currently for me.
Wilson I think is still in the next tier as much as I’ve loved his work this year and he’s definitely jumped up the boards.

From the perspective of where I see development in 4-5 years.

Put hough in a back pocket, I don't see him as a winger.
Bazzo to me is a third tall not a CHB. He could reach that level but i'd say it's a reach.
Slot Barnett in at FB / second ruck imo.
Waterman is also a deeper third tall and does his best work on a lead. Allen is much more the CHF type.
Burgiel to HB or HF but i'd love to see his skills, touch and speed at HB. I think he's better with the ball coming at him rather than having to make the play in the front half.
Culley to the IC, he's the second string bull on baller. You can't play two defensive centremen at the same time IMO moving forwards.
Move Hewett into Culley's spot on field and we need another balanced mid who's maybe a bit more contested than Hewitt at this stage.
For those saying hough is likened to Yeo i see much more Brad sheppard in him . Think he could be very good small to medium defender who can rebound

With speculation as to whether we’ll put Cripps and/or Ryan on the LTI to free up list spot(s) to hit the MSD, who is this season’s Jai Culley?

The over ager dominating the Coates Talent League or a SANFL player who missed being picked up last draft perhaps?

I'd be staying away from any TAS players for the next decade

The two Vic overagers getting talked about are Luke Teal (medium defender) and Ryan Maric (medium/tall forward).

Hard to know when the afl will make the rules up for the Tasmania team when it suits them. You would think it would be decent compo but you never know.

Reckon 2 kids will go 1st round in McKercher and Sanders and Callinan is a chance of first or second round this year.

On the access to academy kids and inability to match under pick 40. Now that should automatically change and follow your ladder position. Finish bottom 4 those teams can match any bid on academy prospects.

Keep it simple and it gives the bottom clubs a little boost from within their own ranks, not pinching another clubs player with a priority pick at the draft.

Great point & has been raised albeit bottom 3.

From the Talent League, third tall Ryan Maric or medium defender Luke Teal.

If we got R2 and R3 pick, that is likely to be around 20 and 40. I would imagine Hawks might be happy to move DGB for those 2 picks. He is a KPD in need of opportunity.

Would Melbourne be interested in pick 20 for Rivers?

Likewise Lions with pick 40 for Robertson.

What would Sydney want for Thick Angus?

So your don't bother is surprising.
My estimations would be swans would ask for our 2nd for Angus but negotiate down to ports 2nd . Robertson if he can't break into the team could be a pick like what was used on SPS .

Georgiades PSD .

Great trade period IMO .

The other who I have been impressed with struggling for opportunities is trey ruscoe . Very good defender first of all but surprisingly is 193cms because he plays on the smaller types not like rotham who tries to play taller to his detriment. Trey is also a very neat kick without being damaging but its what you need under pressure the ability to not turn it over

Really? Dont agree.

He has attributes we lack.

He's an u18 WA state captain who won the Lark Medal.

He's a quick, combative inside mid who we could get relatively cheap because he's still young and the Lions have a very strong midfield.

Played well in finals last year.

He's exactly what we lack and is attainable.. Being from WA and be8ng an ex u18 WA captain contributes to him being gettable. Other Vic teams are also interested.

If we land him for pick 40 or late 30's it would be a very astute pick up. For all the reasons listed.

Dont mind Ruscoe.

Rotham is being asked to fight outside his weight division atm. Much prefer him forward and rucking.

We've taken our share of pretty ordinary WA players from other clubs (although some were delisted) like Liam Bedford, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, Jamie Bennell, Simon Tunbridge, Kane Lucas, Cale Morton, Brendon Ah Chee, Zac Langdon, Tom Joyce etc. Often because we fancied them during their draft year.

McGovern Locked in on New Deal

West Coast’s star defender Jeremy McGovern has agreed to terms on a new two year-deal that will give the Eagles significant cap space to be aggressive in the trade window.

McGovern is yet to sign his new deal but it is understood a player who already handed back money on a deal set to secure him $1.2 million a season has taken another hefty cut in his new deal.

McGovern sacrificed well over $100,00 in each of the final two seasons of his long-term deal in 2021 and 2022

And his new deal gives the Eagles room to recruit players, which McGovern would be keen for them to do so he can enjoy some late career success.

The Eagles have almost zero trade currency given Andrew Gaff, Elliot Yeo and Jack Darling have given diminishing returns in recent years and have committed to retaining that trio

But Gaff, Darling and Yeo are all out of contract at the end of next year, so the Eagles could consider free agency if they could secure players in the right window.

Captain Luke Shuey’s continued horror run with injuries means he might consider retirement even though his form is still strong when he can get on the park.

The Eagles currently have the No. 1 overall pick and Port Adelaide’s second and third-rounders, so will likely have five draft picks within 50.

Your take sounds like an emotional rant because we are losing badly during a rebuild and just want to whinge about something.

Being a state captain and winning a Larke Medal aren't attributes.

He's middle paced. I know he's tracked at a high speed but he's slow exiting stoppages and he also is a shoddy ball user, thus his low penetration game with poor meters gained.

He slides in nicely alongside XON and Ledwards in terms of exposed ability at AFL level.

I'm happy to take Robertson if its an SPS like deal in terms of trade and salary (ie basically free hit). Nothing more. All signs point to him being a bust, he's not shown the signs of guys like Yeo and Cripps.

Agree Robertson’s value is dirt cheap and diminishing..

He's put up similar numbers to XON despite playing behind a significant number of better players in a stronger midfield and sometimes being used defensively. I'd take Robertson over XON every day of the week (personally, I think O'Neill's papers should be stamped and delisted at the end of the season, he's not up to it).

Bookmarked.

Is being a state captain and best player in the u18s not an indicator of having good football attributes?

Xon didn't even play in the state u18 championships never mind captaining a state then and winning best player in the national championships.

And he's a young fringe player in a very strong contending team.

Anyway you have made your call and hopefully he comes across and proves how wrong you are.
