After a brilliant draft led by our recruiters there’s cause for optimism in season 2025. One list spot remains which is likely to be taken by Coby Burgiel or 198cm tall defender and ex-Sun Sandy Brock, both of whom will be training with the squad over summer with a view to be picked up in the SSP.

With ample salary cap room the club will be active in the free agency period, speaking to players such as lock down defender Brandon Starcevich and booming kick Kane Farrell who also uses his elite speed and agility to distribute out of defence or play further up the ground. The question will no doubt be asked of higher priced and less likely suitors including Luke Davies-Uniacke, Ed Richards and Tom De Koning.

Oscar Allen’s future will be discussed at length unless pen is put to paper, with band 1 offers a certainty to be thrown his way that could net the club a top 5 pick. The Chad Warner chase also remains alive and well after reportedly enjoying a round of golf with CEO Don Pyke recently and may well come as a package deal with his younger brother Corey.

It’s a big year for out of contract players Jamieson, Petruccelle, Bazzo and Chesser whilst Cole, Hunt and Kelly will also be out to secure the best deals they can. Rookies Hutchinson and Dewar will look to build on their 2024 form and extend their contracts along with second year players Rawlinson and Livingstone that will likely be playing for their careers.

If 2024 finishing positions prevail, we will be armed with draft picks 3, 13, 21, 31 and 49 having essentially traded out our F3 for Grego and attaining Hawthorn’s first three picks in return for our F4 and Tom Barrass. The later picks are likely to be used to match F/S and NGA bids on Banfield, Walley and Evans whilst gun local talents Rodriguez, Curtin and Swadling will be considered with our early picks should we keep them.

This draft is going to be heavily compromised with up to twenty F/S and academy players likely to be considered within the first two rounds. Unlike 2024 and particularly with the DVI points change, top end picks are anticipated to attract a premium and it’s a good year to have a number of F/S and NGA players available to us as well as a bumper WA crop.

Key considerations that will play out over the year include:

Chad Warner would make us a better side but what price are we prepared to pay?

Is there an under the radar, cheaper player we’d look to target in the trade period to fill a need such as Zach Reid, elder brother of Archer?

Will Cripps, Sheed but particularly the irreplaceable Gov look to go round again?

How long can Harley Reid remain unsigned before we grow concerned?

What holes remain in the list that we look to address in the draft?

Finally what compensation pick, if any would we allow Oscar Allen to walk to a rival if we’re unwilling to offer more than a 5 year deal?

It’s going to be a big year for the club in player acquisition ahead the looming entry of Tasmania into the competition further compromising an already complex draft system.

Anyone else kinda hoping he re-signs with the Swans? We just got done getting burned by Tim Kelly, don't really wanna go through all that again.
Different situation. We came off a premiership, were right in the flag window, and he was the player we thought we needed. And he would have been handy had we been able to maintain the way we played. Now that we're at the bottom, he's not a pressing "must have" player. If Hawks miss the finals, that's a top 10 pick. Hawks 1st, our 2nd, Hawks 2nd. If Chad is OOC and wants to go, they sort of have to take it. If our first is top 5, we keep it and be prepared to walk away.

This guy is exactly what WC need. Goal kicking, game-winning midfielder who kicks most of his goals on the run and many from 50m.

Also 23 years old, huge upside and WC badly need to land a big fish and become a destination club if they are going to attract the right people through FA and trade during the compromised Tassie draft years.

No way Port let Farrell go after losing Houston.

Agreed.

I would really like to draft with more kids, but we need to start moving up, getting Warner for the right price is part of that. He's the right age to complement the kids we've taken and adds some flash to the grit we've just drafted.

Also think adding Warner would increase likelihood of Reid staying, as he will want to play in winning teams.

Thanks noobermensch . Amazing talent and would have to be early favourite to be taken with our best pick if available.

Freddy movements and reading of the play actually reminds me a lot of Don Pyke.

His dual sidedness is so very impressive.

At this early stage and this far out from the next draft ( 😜 ), Freddy is my number 1 want for our First Round pick.

To be honest (and completely unlikely he'd come I know) if we were throwing our salary warchest at someone I'd be keen on De Koning even over Warner.

Not quite as good a player but still a really good, premiership quality ruck IMO. Comes in at the age I reckon we'll need our ruck to be - that 3-5 years older than our core midfield group so they'll be peaking at the same time. And wouldn't cost us draft capital - we need another really solid year of high end young talent injection.

Don't see it happening but do hope we ask the question at least. And we're yet to properly exploit the free agency system in any meaningful capacity, part of me would just enjoy it for that sake.

I agree that in that I don’t think they’d be thrilled but he’s free agent and Port must have a tight cap with their midfield group. I also doubt Lukosious would have taken a pay cut. A band 2 FA contract might be too much for them to match and pick 19 for Farrell would be appealing.

Based on WC finishing 16th and Hawks 9th

Pick 10 and F1 would be enough for Warner (prob means we lose Curtin)

Adding Warner and Freddie would be amazing, plus adding Banfield, Evans and Walley with out later picks

That should be midfield done!

Warner, Ried, Freddie and Hewett our new fab 4 with plentry of B grade support

If Cripps doesn't kick 30 and Sheed doesn't play 16 games, they're done. We have too many small forwards and forward/mids that need to be developed in their spots. I can't see Sheed getting a game even if he gets fit. And I can see Cripps getting dropped at the bye if he hasn't kicked a dozen or more.

The race for Chad Warner heats up. As per WA radio reports, can confirm the Swans star spent time with West Coast officials in Perth on the weekend, which included playing golf with them.Dean Cox says getting him extend his deal beyond next season is ‘top of the priority list.’

Different players. Different ages.

And our list is at a different development stage to when we landed Kelly.

Having a decent 1st rounder to deal will help get it done.

How many more kids do we need before the list is unbalanced again?

I love Freddie and his skills but if he was available it'd still be very hard to pass on Sharp. I think he'd be a bit disappointed in his futures game however he is just an absolute contested beast. On top of that he is very, very good overhead. Makes tagging him out of games much more difficult and he has a very good defensive side to his game as well.

The club going forward definitely needs some more class on the outside though.

It will be interesting to see what the Tigers do next year if they have the #1 pick again. After taking Lalor and Smillie this draft and with Hopper and Taranto still on the list in their prime do they need another big bodied bullocking mid? I guess they still have to take the best available but it makes it at least a possibility that Sharp could slip to 2

Tigers are dead certs to win the spoon next year. They will also take the best talent available. Dyson Sharp by all reports is the best talent.

Duursma has more upside. If he can bring his outside mid numbers into the middle next year it would likely drop Sharp to 2.

How much is discussion around next years strategy factoring in a Warner move? What do you think we’d be willing to give up at a maximum for his services?

100% agree with your analysis

Trouble is, i think we finish above North again. I don't see the improvement in them that obviously think they will have. If that's the case Tigers will take both.

If we do finish second last, might be able to have some real interesting discussions with Adelaide (if they finish 3rd/4th last) about what they'd give us for pick 2 (and allow us to still get Rodriguez).

Picking up a future 2026 First might be helpful for any Warner deal.

Falling asleep watching current gettable episode,
I think Freo offered to swap 17+30 for 15 but we went with ports 16+45 to avoid Freo possibly grabbing Allan (even though they wanted Reid)
That doesn't make sense? Didn't Freo want to move up above Port to get Berry? Guess that would leave Port potentially to take Allan.

Port would have taken Shanahan had Berry not been available. Freo also wanted a future second back. Also didn't trust Freo even if they relented on the F2 that they wouldn't take Allan.

Also I think people are pretty happy with Grego now?

All in all outside of Saints jumping for Boxshall the draft couldn't have gone better from a club perspective.
