Robertson/Garcia would be in our best 18 and protecting some of the younger guys with bigger bodies. Instead they wanna take 2 year deals and stay on the next to be delisted pile
We'd be complaining about Robertson like all our other mids. Wouldn't move the needle and decided to tank his career by staying at Brisbane.

Might end up doing us a favour and sign with BEagles once delisted.

Again, NFI about Garcia.

Simple answer is they are chasing flags, Brisbane are the Bulldogs are in the window while we aren't.

People will scoff about the latter, but the Bulldogs are capable of making a grand final out of nowhere, as they did in 2016 and 2021. Anything is possible while they still have the Bont and some of their older guys.

Pretty sure Witts gave the Suns 1st touch opportunity and left us chasing tail, especially in the second term.

Archer Ried slowly broke even in the 3rd but Flynn was comprehensively beaten, as was our midfield.

1st touch puts a player 1 to 2 metres in front and you can't play contested football from behind.
You can’t blame it all on the rucks.

Flynn was putrid. But it’s easy to rice to a losing ruckman. You can read oppo ruckman, or just play super defensive.

We did neither. It’s not just in clearance we were beaten- we were -40 in contested possession and minus 19 in post clearance contested possession.

That post clearance number has nothing to do with ruckman as the ball is already out of the stoppage.

It’s a dreadful statistic. And an indictment on mids first and foremost .

Witts wasn't the difference. He outplayed Flynn sure but we got destroyed in the midfield by an outfit that was classier and wanted it more. Witts will beat other ruckman in the competition during the year and Gold Coast won't win by 80+ points.

Why`s that? It’s because the opposition midfield will work hard enough to halve the contest. I wish Eagles supporters would stop blaming the rucks for out midfield getting demolished.

A good Ruck that dominates is nice and yeah it gives your mids an opportunity, however that’s still for a contested ball, that’s all it gives you. it’s one of the more overrated parts of footy.
Yep 💯. Geelong used to push our mids under the ball and harass them when we had Nick Nat.

Despite being seriously down on talent in the area, I'm not convinced about the coaching structure.

I feel Boots isn't the answer as stoppage coach. Only been in one club mainly standing under a dominant ruckman.

Go and get a stoppage coach from a team that has worked under different systems at teams who have had good midfield structures in the modern game.

It’s personnel.

Shuey won a norm smith roving ton Nathan fukcing Vardy.

We just haven’t invested enough in midfielders. We need 3 elite ball winning mids.

Instead our first round picks in the last 3 national drafts have gone on 2xHBF, an injury prone mid with broken feet, and Jake Stringer deluxe.

And then we wonder why a midfield of Graham, Duggan, Hutchinson gets smashed.

Dont forget we also brought in 3 mature agers... all flankers.. ontop of playing flankers on our wings and a flanker in the midfield... and Tim Kelly whose best suited to a flank nowadays... and then our Jake Stringer deluxe who played a majority of the game on a flank

Id argue we played 0 natural midfielders yesterday

At this point I’d just take Starcevich for free and guarantee him midfield minutes because he’d be better than what we had yesterday and also better than what we have coming through.

lol like a side has never won before when there ruckman is losing the ruck duel. Our mids were rubbish don’t give them an out by saying it was the rucks fault. It wasn’t.

Somewhere in W.A yesterday was Greg Clark watching his TV screaming "Id do better then that"

We had him for 2 years, coaches saw him week in and week out in that time and he showed he wasn't good enough when given his chances at AFL level.

Reality is he's a good WAFL player, but not good enough at AFL level.

Move on

This is the same delusional thinking that we has seen us basically waste the last 3 national drafts.

Stop trying to cut corners and find a silver bullet.

if we base it off yesterday we haven’t got the players on our list to rely on natural internal development.

We have no mids, no KPD. We have 2 KPF wasting their prime years, and bunch of flankers.

Warner would just be a waste of picks and salary cap. And he’d be dumb if he left Sydney to come play for this rabble.

We’ve really botched this.
Yes if the next 22 weeks plays out like yesterday but it won’t be based off yesterday it will be based off the whole year.

Agreed if it plays out majority of the year in a similar fashion he is very unlikely to come.

But fix the midfield and you will fix a lot of the issues.

Have people actually watched Chad Warner play?

His Nick name is one way Warner. He’s a damaging hand ball recieve player. High metres gained, high score involvements.

Ie- he’s what Tim Kelly was at Geelong .

He doesn’t fix our midfield. He’s the cream, but we are missing the whole entire cake.

Not only would it be unlikely he would come, but it would be negligent on West Coast to use multiple high end picks on Warner when they have so many glaring holes. It’d actually just set us back.

West Coast would be better off using the picks this year on genuine ball winning midfielders.

Honestly you know what's gonna happen.

We'll get pick 1...

Adelaide will offer Curtin and Their 1st and 3rd and we'll send back a 2nd because they'll want the kid from Centrals and we'll go "oh sick, there's a good WA kid around pick 12 bro... deal"

Sheed was a decent midfield pick in 2013, and then I’d say we didn’t have another even passable midfield selection until Hewett in 2022, who the jury is still out on.

We’re seeing the result of what no midfield draft hits for a decade does to a team.

I believe we have started to rectify this with recent drafts, but it won’t be until guys like Hewett, Harley, Hall, Gross, Bo etc are 3-5 year players with hardened bodies that we’ll even have a chance of competing in the middle.

It really is scary to think back to how absolutely abhorrent our list was going into the 2021 draft. Filled with old champions, but the foundations were absolutely rotten with next to no young talent coming through at all.

Bingo

Every time the ball hit the ground yesterday, every Suns midfielder would be bursting forward ready to recieve it, our midfielders were at a complete standstill. One of the most pathetic showings I’ve ever seen from us. To not even have a honeymoon period under a brand new coach is hilarious.

unfortunately Venables and branded didn't go to plan.

it’s not a stretch to to think that Sheed was our last midfield pick.

Hewett has looked miles off it, is injury prone and is so unclutch it hurts.

Then we also have Jake Stringer deluxe who is a forward pocket and showy centre bounce specialist who is good for a highlight or two per game.

The idea is Harley in year 3 should be go to rocket up or to Hewett in year 4….. it’s why you watch throughout the year to see how it’s trending. You’d hope they find 2 more that can play at the level over the season.

Not answering Warner call after round 1 is just stupid and gross negligence of the highest order.

Go all in on the draft and if those picks don’t land? If we still have them getting belted by 100pts at WAFL level? A pick in the teens which is likely to Hawks pick will be close to pick 30.

Chad would likely be better then the pick 2 or 3 we take in the draft?

You add known talent if you can. If that’s draft, Trade or FA.

The option might be let Oscar walk to get 2 top end mids or 1 and Warner.

One way player, Similar was said about Rankine and Dawson and the Crows have hardly hit a first round pick in all their years down the bottom. Imagine where they would be if they didn’t add them. (They would be us) Because those players help boost your team up and allow to add best 22 fringe players because they can see the light. Peatling, ANB, Cummings this year. While the kids develop.

Gotta pull all 3 levers and not stop answering or putting calls into stars of the league at round 1.

People go on about not drafting mids the last 2-3 years, but we got Harley, Elijah with early picks. Allan also out performed Draper in the championships, so you could add him too, and Gross.

Not splitting in 2022 would've got us Wardlaw who's like Hewett, talented but injured a lot. And taking Jagga, Draper or Langford instead of Allan, Baker and Gross would've done sfa for us yesterday either.

The problem is not the last 3 years of drafting, it's the period from like 2014-2021 that's left us completely bare in the middle. No mature mids with talent who could genuinely influence results. Young players are not going to do that, especially with Reid and Hewett having interrupted pre-seasons

i was sitting behind the goals at the river end yesterday. time and time again you see waves of blue jumpers (mids) jogging down to defence a good 15-20m behind the play while gold coast were going into attack.

sad to see.

Early days for sure, but if we don't turn things around on field I don't see how we could possibly retain Harley.

Pretty much every factor says we will lose him. If he returns to Victoria:
  • More money
  • Longer contract
  • Likely a better performing/trending club, better chance at silverware
  • Can live with girlfriend, enjoy it on the reg
  • Close to family and friends
  • Better media opportunities both during and after career
  • Get away from the West Australian

- weather?

If you thought the Hawks trade a whole draft hand for TB was going to be a good idea at round 7 last year when they just got pantsed by nearly 80 points and were 1-6.

It’s a long season and probably even longer for Eagles fans but a lot still to play out.

But 100% the list team should be looking for
1- Pure midfielders
2- Ruck
3- a 2025 HBF, run and elite kick.

If that’s draft, trade or FA and make sure it’s the right price and not the right thing to do in a deal.
