Nothing ground breaking in the article

  • Brisbane looking at Allen as a Daniher replacement
  • We’ve been in talks with Allen but are offering a medium term extension at this stage

Happy for us to wait a little to see how his knee holds up (and how Reid and Shanahan develop)

FA compensation will be band 1 (likely meaning a top 5 pick) unless the AFL move the goal posts which is always a possibility

I wouldn’t be surprised if Clarke’s preference is to move him on. Big question is at what point do we accept a pick for Oscar?

If we turn Oscar and our 1R pick into Warner and Rodriguez I’d be pretty comfortable with that with the caveat that there’s a lot of water to go under the bridge before the draft.

Once we gave waterman a long term deal Oscar being expendable became a possibility. Would hurt to see him go but might be for the best

I suppose i want to see how Waterman and Allen play together with both wanting to be the top dog. If we are looking at a McKay/Curnow or Hawkins/Cameron combination then the smart choice would be to keep him as they are both the same age and KPP guns don't grow on trees.

However his body is a huge concern and if it comes down to giving him a negligent 6-7 year deal to keep him or letting him walk for Band 1 compo i suppose it will depend where we finish. If it's bottom four then i'd say farewell but if it's 9-14 then i suppose i'd push to sign him as the compo would not be worth it.

Big year ahead.

Surely the Swans would be super keen on Allen too? They've been after a good KPF for a while now, notably throwing huge money at Naughton.

Perhaps Allen could be shipped off to the swans as part of a Warner trade.

Don't like to see one of our best players and a captain leave but if he does it shouldnt be a disaster

Allen could win a few flags there, he'd be silly to not consider it strongly.

Potentially good news for Archer Reid and Shanahan.
I thought the general feeling was Brisbane was on the decline after a long run of finals and they were fortunate to win a flag over clear favourites Sydney that would have left the club as an under-achieving one like St Kilda if they hadn't snagged it. Not sure there are more flags on the horizon unless they continue to trade in cleverly.

Waterman will always be secondary to Allen in club calculations.

Where does Brisbane's decline come from?
They've completely refreshed their midfield over the last 3 years with Ashcroft x2, Fletcher and Marshall.
Dunkley(28) and Mcluggage(26) aren't even old, Andrews(28) isn't old either.
It's just Zorko and Neale really who theyll need to replace and they've got plenty of young guys to do it, courtesy of academy and father sons.
They'll be in a premiership window for at least 3-4 more years, even post Neale.

Getting Oscar to replace Daniher just ticks the only other box they dont have filled.

If I had to guess, I'd say it would be in their forward line, given they have lost Daniher and Cameron is 30. If they don't get Allen, it's not a strong forward line. Their backline is hardly full of stars either. They have done well to get some free hits in the middle and their midfield is strong. But let's remember, they finished fifth after being in finals for almost six years. If I were Allen, I wouldn't be assuming I'd be walking into flags.

They finished 5th because of their poor start to the year. Of their 8 losses they have 5 in the first 7 rounds, due to loss of personnel and a slight restructure.

If they have Allen and Hipwood, then they have Morris, Lohman, rayner, Bailey and Ah chee, that's not a bad forward line at all.

Main point is they had an awful run with injury last year but still made a grand final. Their older guys have elite replacements already on the list.
They'll get another mid first round pick academy mid this year, no doubt they'll get more good ones in coming years to keep the list top up strong

If I'm Brisbane I'm chasing JWilliams not Oscar, cheaper with a massive ceiling. Imagine williams getting lace out passes from the ashcroft bros over the next 10 years

Edit- cheaper by salary cap noted Oscar is a FA

Personally don't see how Brissie would have the capital to chase Oscar at this point?

We could float him in front of any number of other clubs and either pick up a top 10 player and/or a raft of good draft picks. What would the Lions realistically offer? A fringe midfielder and a pick in the teens? They aren't gonna part with quality because they'll be looking to extend their window.

That is of course if we don't bend over and present rump because "he wants to get to his nominated club".

They could get Oscar a proven A-grade commodity for 0 draft assets vs Jack Williams a kid who might be A-grade, might not, but also would cost a half decent pick

Daniher cash i presume, neale is getting up there too and might start to get smaller contracts.
The ashcrofts won't be on mega cash yet

Our list management has been very, very good. Throw in just under 1m of Daniher money and two years to plan the recruitment and we absolutely can afford Oscar.

Don’t think Warner comes if we are letting Oscar Allen leave.

While bringing in pick 3-6 for Oscar decent business. It’s a weird move 12 months after paying pick 14 for Baker because we need that age bracket and leadership……

I think the difference is we’ve got a star key forward in Waterman and several young incredible key forward prospects though, Oscar is currently blocking them. Baker was needed as our half back options were atrocious, Graham was needed as we severely lacked midfield depth.

I’m not taking the risk on Oscar personally, the contract he wants will almsot certainly come back to haunt us.

I don’t think Allen is blocking anyone at this stage. His last full season he was in the AA squad. Dragged us over the line in a game last year.

Archer and Shanahan could still be seasons away before they are AFL ready.

Most likely we are in a can’t lose situation if Allen decides to leave at the end of the year but still seems like we are half baking this. Trading away pick 3 and then also pick 14 but to go for picks the next off season.

Just can’t see us attracting Warner and Starcevich ect by letting a 25yo key forward leave.

I know some will be happy to see oscar go for the top 5 compo on the basis we have shiny new toys in reid and shanahan. Let's not forget these guys haven't even played an AFL game yet so are far from a known quantity.

The mystery box is always appealing but shipping a known 50 goal forward who is also our leader is a risky play.

That said I don't mind us letting it play out for a while to see how oscars knee goes this year and see how the kids come on.

CH7 reporting we’ve offered Allen a 3 year contract

If true, it’s no wonder his manager has pushed the story into the media

You’d think he’d be chasing at least 5 coming into his FA contract year. And he’ll be offered longer from rival clubs

What happens with Allen really isnt up to us, as long as we offer him a fair contract. Its just unfortunate its worked out that way with the picks imo.
If Brisbane want to pay huge overs to lure Allen then thats on them, I dont think we should be matching in this case.

If Allen wants to leave there isnt much we can do about it.
Wouldnt want Starcevich if we lose Allen to FA, as itd dilute any compo, and Warner is more than likely coming to WA anyway. We can offer a far more attractive salary than the dockers can.

Thats a pretty crap offer if true, 3 years?
Id feel pretty disrespected if I was Allen seeing that come through, unless its on MEGA money to make up for it.
