I’m keeping Cole. From the outside it feels like he’s a culture guy at the club. He’s impressed me with how he’s attacking the new game plan. Maybe he’ll be phased out over his next contract, but maybe he won’t, one thing for certain is he’d still bring a positive attitude to the club if he was playing 2s.

There’s Something about bridging the gap between our last and next premiership.
I wasn't a fan of Cole in recent times, but he's adapted to the new style well, and is a lock for me in the starting list each week (until he's not). But also provides some seniority and experience.

The next iteration of this is that clubs follow the Daniher model.

For instance- Sydney can match an offer of 15 million over 8 years, as their cap would be empty in years 6,7,8 but couldn’t match an offer of 7 million over 3 years.

Then we extend after 18 months for 8 million over 5.

Or…. The AFL forces clubs to match not just the overall offer, but each contract year.
A little different as Daniher wanted out the year before and the Bombers didn’t trade him, so would’ve been a little bit of ill will there.

And the 3 years was reasonable for the lions due to Daniher’s injury history.

If we give Chad 3 year deal it will set off alarm bells at AFL house for manipulating the system…

Once again like Baker with the Tigers, I don’t think Chad would want anything to do with screwing over Sydney.

They will just want fairer compo like Danger and Cameron got for their clubs.

Youll need buy in from all parties, the Eagles, Chad and his manager. A lot of water to go under the bridge but it’s probably going to be a trade anyway in 2 years unless Sydney unlikely bottom out that year.

Cole was always going to adapt the best to the new game plan as he was the only guy who took the game on as Simpson tried to change their style in his last season.

He did not take the game on.

It’s like if I go to WC and have everyone sit down and all of a sudden I run with the ball being unfit and slow, I will look like I take the game on. No I don’t, everyone else is simply not moving.

Him getting and running with the ball with us 80 points down because his opponent is downhill skiing isn’t an indicator of ability.

Agreed - he would also cost the most unfortunately.

I would love to get one back at the Hawks and bring him over for a late second or later pick but he played very well last weekend and I'm sure he's close to breaking out this season.

Tunstill I haven't followed much but he is a balanced mid at Brissy who can't get a game.

Was part of the strong WA cohort in 2021 draft
And that's ok, the better players do.
He would be a second round pick, WCE-phil rated him as WC 2nd round pick.
At least a 4 year contract imo, might even get him for Hawks 2nd and 3rd???
We need someone who can fill the role that Kelly has been doing, Ward is a balanced inside outside mid but has more grunt than Kelly and is a 8-10 year player.
Or if we wanted to aim higher, I would go after Flanders from GC, still has a contract to 2027 and might cost a 1st round pick, 24 elite and would be next best mid at GC after Rowell/Anderson/Miller and tough inside outside.

As Cal said on the latest Gettable. Teams now have cash to match RFAs, they’ll just move money around if it means they get a better deal then the compo pick. So even if Chad comes when he’s a FA, expect to still have to trace for him.

You’d hope our mid and young player stocks are looking pretty good by then.

If no Warner?
No Oscar?
Who knows with Harley?

That could be a lot of cap room.

Bobby Hill and Darcy Cameron linked?

Interesting off season coming up.

Yes but with everyone having more money, it means those that have free call all of a sudden have even more.

It’s not about having more, it’s all about where you sit relative to any other interested party.

Cole has been amongst the best for both games.

For a bunch of blokes who have screamed and carried on about selection integrity for 5 years, Cole haters really showing their true colours.

A pick after Swans first is reasonable compo.

It’s not like Baker where we asked him to go through the PsD.

Not similar at all.

Cole been amongst the best? Says who?

Well it’s personal opinion as he hasn’t been listed amongst the best in any of the reports.

It’s not haters, it’s old Simpson’s credits circle that still love him and can’t let go.

If he is amongst the best, you know you are in trouble as a team.

Huh?

Cole has comfortably been amongst our best this season. Suits the gameplan quite well and it's no surprise, considering he's shown a propensity to run hard and attack lines for years, that Covid gam vs Melbourne where we almost came back from 40 down, he was the main driver from defence is a prime example.

He'll suit Mini's gameplan very well.

People who are saying they are not fussed that Chad is staying at the Swans are lying to themselves. He is exactly the player we need to fastrack our rebuild and start being competitive again. I for one am bummed that he's chosen to stay - although can't blame him given where we're at as a footy club right now.

Three years from now is a long time and anything could happen between now and then. We may never see Chad running around in an Eagles jersey which is very disappointing

Its interesting that hill and Cameron are linked seeing as they chose not to come back to WA

I believe Chad FA will now be the Tassie draft. They win the flag that’s a pick in the 40s probably. They will match and make sure it’s a trade.

Not talking anything about the PSD. I believe they are the same management group. We ‘love doing the right thing’. Chad will make sure they are compensated fairly (will still be unders compared to this year but more then just band 1 if the Swans have a good year in 2027.

Yeah, from what I’ve heard reported is both have been playing for unders $400-$500k a season.

Cameron you’d think towards the back end of his career would want to maximise his earnings from here. Not sure what sort of contract we would be offering.

Hill imo most likely more just a contract negotiation tactic. Apparently wants his deal redone, Fair enough too.

We are going to have to pay someone, even more so if it draft focus again this year.

Let's assume we get the spoon and Hawks win the flag.

We let allen go. Highest compo.
Warners stays in Sydney.

Draft picks
1 best available
2 best available
18
19
36
54

We take the 2 best players in the draft, this year being the last year any team will have that availablity to do so BC of Tassie.

The 4 picks later are all in prime spots for nga/FS west Aussie kids with the talent we need.

And we fully preserve next year's draft haul and/or use these to trade in a couple more money ballers.

Yeah, nah.

Attempted quick fix for a dopamine hit that does precisely zero for our long term midfield build. In fact, it would negatively impact it.

Yeo and Kelly are almost done, so you'd be long term replacing 2 players with 1, whilst giving up access to the elite end of the draft.

Essentially, you'd be fingers crossed that the likes of Hewett, Hall & Gross become B+ at least. I certainly hope they do but it's a much greater chance of getting a top end mid via the draft than in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Then there's the fact we have NFI what Harley will do.

Warner now might snatch us a few more wins but I'd rather have a solid block of mids before bringing in big name players.

This is a great worst/best case scenario

If not traded, 18 and 19 would be ideally used to bundle up for the lowest of the following picks
Powers
Lions
Pies
Suns
Swans

Hopefully one is around the 5-10 mark.

3 top 10 picks
Sharp
Rodriguez
Curtin

imo bring in 2 of Ed Allen, Sheldrick, Tunstill if possible.

Id be asking the question of Lachie Neale. Maybe a Sam Mitchell sort of deal playing into coaching, if he wants to head in that direction and his misses still keen to get home while the kids are young.

Have a red hot crack at Will Powell, there was someone on here during the off season who said he might be keen to come back to Perth. GC have plenty to his type now and of Rowell stay and Ben King will be in his FA year they need to find some cash.

He's 23, for ****'s sake, not 32. You'd be picking a guaranteed gun over a crapshoot. There are absolutely no guarantees that two of the top five players in this year's draft end up better than Chad Warner, in fact, odds are probably against it.
