Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) 2020

About 1100 hundred people died of the flu a few years ago in Australia. Can't be bothered to look up the actual stats but all you can. It was a worse year then usual. More used to die of the flu when I was back at Uni (ISTR, just made that up 'I seem to remember') so this coronavirus thing is not anywhere as dangerous as the flu on evidence up to now.

One thing for sure. If typhus or cholera hits our shores the stores will sell out of nasal tissues rather than poo paper!!!!!!

I plan to self medicate on Ruherglen Muscat
Yeah...Except only a small percentage of the population has been exposed to Coronavirus and there is no vaccine till maybe next year. This is far more dangerous than your typical flu at the moment. When was the last time the world reacted like this to a flu?

Italy so far has a mortality rate of 6.64 percent from 12,462 cases. 827 dead.

South Korea is possibly a better example for us, as they instituted very effective containment measures very fast.
You have this the wrong way around, Italy is much, closer to the model we are following. Countries like South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan were very proactive and have quickly taken strong measures.

Like Italy, France, Germany, the US etc, we are waiting for our numbers to go up before reacting. The slow onset of symptoms and the fact we are only testing a tiny amount of people make our current numbers appear much lower than they actually are.

Id say we are 95% chance of empty stadiums for round 1 and probably over 50% chance the season is delayed or cancelled
The season's still a long way off in this environment.

Plus only a matter of time before a player/support staff has it.

We are where Italy was 3 weeks ago so unless severe containment measures are instigated now ,which doesn't appear to be happening , there is a risk of significant escalation

After a few more discussions with a few people I know in both Health and sports I move that up to 99.999999% for empty grounds and probably close to that for at least cancelling the start of the season.

With the season another week away they wont announce it yet. They will hope the government pulls the plug so the AFL dont have to make the call. But by next week they'll have to

I’m spooked now - shut it down and we’ll work our way through the consequences.

Our leaders are shirking the hard calls. Fires what fires? Virus, she’ll be right, if lots get it well then we’ll worry. They might just get themselves in the history books as leaders worth studying for what not to do.

Thats directed not just at politicians but leaders of other big organisations including gill.

Honestly sounds like we should be starting the extreme measures domestically and not waiting another few weeks. Sounds like the hospitals are already starting to be stretched here in Melbourne. Really shouldnt push it further.

I went in to work today but fully expect next week to be work from home only

Exactly what I said to my wife this morning.

So the GP has been cancelled, Disneyland shut down until the end of the month and EPL games now being cancelled.

I just don't see how the AFL season starts next week.

As for the actions of our Government; utterly appalled at the lack of direction and inability to shut everything down immediately a disgrace.

I guess it needs to get a hell of a lot worse before anything is done.:drunk:

I think until players/officials start getting coronavirus then games should go ahead but with empty crowds

Don't want to be the people who make the hard decision; despite being paid a lot to make these decisions.

Today's cricket is locked out from fans too. Thank goodness some common sense is being shown here & sports administrators are showing initiative and aren't being led by the politicians. Morrison's address to the public last night was more concerned with economic consequences. Qld's premier encouraging people to attend the rugby, stating that she'll be in the crowd. Awesome.

It's going to spread. It's already here. It's now a case of slowing the spread so the health system can at least cope with the infected.

Have a friend of a friend that was tested last night at home in self isolation after experiencing symptoms. He's a movie set builder & spent a day with Tom Hanks along with a lot of other movie set staff. Selfies with Tom etc etc.

Well that's actually when it shouldn't go ahead.

That's when you'll infect many more players than you should.

Read up on this virus , how it instigates ,how it infiltrates and how it infects. The footy field would be the absolute worst place to expose yourself.

It's all straightforward. They haven't shut down the NBA for nothing with just one player infected at this point.

The reason we will get a worse scenario is because people don't self distance and isolate when they have the chance to.

Maybe our politicians are about to let some Darwinism do its work and get themselves infected? It's already been happening a lot overseas so maybe this coronavirus could be what saves the world from the universally shit house 'leaders' we see globally. How would we make a statue of this heroic virus, though....

Thats my point. When NBA or EPL players/staff get it then they shut it down.

The reason to shut down a sport would be because the season would be compromised from too many players/teams missing players because they have coronavirus.

They'll get it if it's not shut down proactively, and then the team will get it.

EPL, NBA, Serie A, F1... all have had players and/or coaches contract it. There's nothing special about the AFL and the NRL that will result in them not getting it.

The reason to shut down a sport would be because the season would be compromised from too many players/teams missing players because they have coronavirus.

The reason to shut down a sport is because you're enforcing coronavirus-spreading situations for a large number of people every week because of the large degree of travel and interaction required.

It was comforting to know that the Qld Premier somehow prioritised speaking to Baz Luhrmann to check up on Tom Hanks' welfare.

Honestly, politicians are so shameless it is embarrassing.

It is inevitable they will get it though.

Just delay / suspend / shorten the season; honestly, why wait?

I think they'll try and start the season but it's too early to cancel all sporting competitions for the next 6 months. Shutting out crowds for games and other events would be a no brainer.

Does it extend to amateur sport? Other industries?

I think it'll be a hiatus of a couple of months rather than a full on cancellation.

The risk of catching it will only get worse though. Plus it compromises the season. Might as well try and get a couple of months in

You don't seem to have any understanding of this virus at all .

That sort of thinking has put Italy where it is now and where the US is headed.
