I'm relying on micro evolution to save me. Like with SARS it's only the east Asian areas that will get hammered. UK US AND AUS/NZ = always sweet. Just with residents of machu picchu have evolved a higher lung capacity over the years (because the air is thinner) I suspect there will be micro-evolutionary differences in us not eating bats, monkeys and civet cat feaces for the last few thousand years. Maybe that's why people in the East Asian region have x5 ACE2 expression than other groups.
Um i think you have evolution wrong. A population that eats bats for thousands of years is going to be more immune to a virus that comes from bats then a population that doesnt eat bats.

I had a dose of the flu last year. Until then I would have used the term interchangeably with having a cold.

it floored me like nothing before. Was off work for a week.
When you have the real flu, not some other random virus, you feel like dying and you don't much care.

Truth lies somewhere between the hysteria and the dismissal.

This isnt just the flu; the fatality rate looks like its 1-2%, but it may still be lower because of cases going unreported. Still, once it gets out, that still means there will be people in our lives who will die from it. People going on about how the flu kills more at this stage dont really have a grasp on the basics.

Theres still a lot we dont know about it tho; theres some concerning indications about high re-infection rates, suggesting people are either vulnerable to catching it again, or it can lie dormant. It may not be a case of 'going through the process and then you'll be fine', as I have paraphrased from the leader of the free world.

However my personal prediction is that once it's a pandemic, governments will lie down and accept it to save the economy. So the AFL may not be effected.

Will be interesting to see what happens once theres a vaccination out there.

It's because i don't care, all you nervous nellies can stay cooped up in your air tight houses shitting your pants you don't get the sniffles and not interact with anyone ever again while I'm going to enjoy living my life.
Don’t care enough to post here about it?

I have no issue with people not caring or even hating old people like Brutalitops - but how does that translate into you thinking you can assert really dumb non facts to make your anti nervous nelly argument. If you post in a public forum you can deal with reactions to poor arguments.

Better yet, just don’t post if you don’t actually have facts or have researched it. You contribute NOTHING

As Australians are urged to stop shaking hands to reduce the coronavirus risk, authorities are now considering more extreme prevention measures such as bans on large gatherings.

Opening round this season could be a little underwhelming....

I think this will be the case. Match attendance numbers would be decreased all round, until news of this virus is assuredly controlled.

By the same token, we can use the attendance numbers in large crowds as a loose way to assess how serious the virus spread is.

I don't hate old people, I just tend to look at the silver linings. Like, here's another one: less boomers on the road meaning traffic will flow better as people people will be going the speed limit more often.

Mortality rate for those under the age of 45 is between 0.2% and 0.4%. Should we as a population really be that concerned about it?

On the evidence of 100,000 confirmed cases, if you're less than 75 years old, it largely manifests as a bad cold (or less). That's it. If I were elderly, or had pre-existing medical conditions I would not go to public events. It is very dangerous to the these people. If I am a healthy person under 75 the level of concern is justifiably quite low.

By way of comparison the standard seasonal flu has already killed many many more people this year (I understand the figure is 65,000); and we are not panicking and stopping society over this. Why arent we? Because for seasonal flu the lethality per infection is very low. Many more people are infected, but only 0.02% of people infected die. In the case of Coronavirus, if you are over 75, the lethality rate is around 8%- 14% per infection. That is very very dangerous. However, If you are healthy person under 75 (and excluding those with other pre-existing medical conditions) the lethality rate is more that 0.02% but less than 2%, and quite possibly lower.

My personal view is we should remain vigilent and 'on-watch' over the progress of the virus, but calm and avoid throwing the baby out with the bath water. We have a economy, jobs, and communities that need support in challenging times. We need to demonstrate some backbone.

Yeah probably. But the overall numbers say "what's the big deal"? The media frenzy will cause more harm than the actual virus. I refuse to get worked up because people over the age of 70 have a 1 in 12 chance of dying. Those odds would be pretty consistent overall with any flu season.
