A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step.

There was a time when China had only 33 cases. There was even a time when only 33 people had the plague in the middle ages.
Italy had 9 cases only two weeks ago.

Na we just accept we will get the flu and be ok. Like any other flu.

Yeah because influenza never hurt anybody, right?

CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.

Of course, the 'Spanish Flu' outbreak in 1918 was a media beat up.....obviously

There is a lot that will happen in two weeks outside Australia that will impact on all of us. Some countries (some close to us) may start reporting significant numbers and South America and Africa are yet to be affected according to the data so far.

The issue is the long incubation period (including no symptoms) of between 5 and 14 days (some outliers debunk this) and the R0 (R Naught) that currently is calculated for every person who gets COVID-19, they will pass it on to an average of two to 3.1 people. This figure is being refined/debated and so according to University of Michigan this is similar to Seasonal flu but with more drastic results for those who are aged and/or are unwell/immunosuppressed

Ebola, 20141.51 to 2.53
H1N1 Influenza, 20091.46 to 1.48
Seasonal Influenza2.00 to 3.00
Measles12.00 to 18.00
Polio5.00 to 7.00
SARS<1 to 2.75
Smallpox5.00 to 7.00
COVID2.00 to 3.10

There will be a point where we give up attempting to prevent it crossing the border and that may be well before the first Sherrin is bounced. Let's hope it isn't...
and wash your hands please!

Yet no-one gave a shit until the CORONA-VIRUS - now its the end of the world, stock up on water.......because our taps wont work anymore???

If our 80 yo end up going a little earlier than planned, is it really that bad.. Its actually quite comical seeing all these morbidly obese people stocking up on toilet paper and pasta.. you are afraid of a little flu, yet continue to pile pack of smith chips and pack of tim tam into your gob each day..

That's what the Chief medical officer is saying you should do:

The 12.48 update.

Take a deap breath and shakes head.

Are people in China, South Korea and Italy 'going about their normal business'? No.

It is estimated that this situation will peak in Australia in August. Six months from now.

The worlds largest ecconomy is paralysed, others are being massively effected. Is that 'normal'? No.

Are world leaders and governments 'going about their normal business'? No.

Governments are asking people to prepare, there are travel bans in place right now in Australia. Is that normal? No.

The govt is saying dont panic. And we shouldnt panic. Nor should we ignor all the facts, what is happening elsewhere and how this situation will evolve.

If you think its business as usual go for a holiday to China champ.

just accept you will get the virus at some point and you will survive - probably best to get it now as emergency rooms arent chock full of people with flu symptoms

I agree i think everyone will eventually get it, especially as we move into winter and the historical flu season, only thing a healthy person needs to be concerned with is ensuring they have enough sick leave to cover the 14 day isolation period.

The economy is going to be smashed, we will have GFC type job losses.. This is just a given with the Chinese economy basically shut down. Tourism sector is in trouble, although more Aussies will just travel at home rather than go to Europe or SE Asia and the education sector which has ridden the gravy train of foreign students will need to adapt.

It may not seem like a lot but 0.2% is still a massive number for the 10 to 49 bracket, especially compared to the normal flu.

Sure but I suspect the majority are already people with severe respiratory issues. This was also in China, and I would imagine the Australian health system is far better prepared to manage it..

Already have accepted that mate. It's here and everyone will likely cop it in the next year or two. What has that got to do with this discussion? Nothing.

But if I do get it I won't be going to work, or visiting my parents or schools etc. I certainly won't treat it as a normal cold because it isn't a normal cold, especially to the elderly or sick. My parents who are in their 70's get normal cold's once or twice a year, if they caught Cov19 chances are they would struggle and badly.

If this is just another 'normal everyday cold' and we shouldn't worry about it why is the world so concerned? Why the travel bans, why has China closed down its economy and lost billions?

Probably because most of china dont have a good health system or good health in general.

Australia in general will be fine (except for the scare mongering that has occured in the media every day)

The world will go into a recession this year, Japan and Germany / the EU were already boarding on it in December. Tourism has dried up massively, factories closed down, supply chains halted or severely disrupted. The ax is out where I work and getting sharpened.

A tough 12 months coming up, real tough.
