I like your think and hope that is the case!

I just don’t like how the media are fear mongering the shit out of it, In the U.S they are even politicalizing it which is pathetic, just shows how low they will go to get an audience.
The media have not done enough to explain the challenges we all face from this virus. It means there are millions of dickheads out there who think this is just a political stunt, or fear monger omg, or “just the flu”. And you will all be culpable if you don’t do your bit to prevent the spread of this..

Absolutely blown out of proportion...unless you are already quite ill and elderly then it could be concern for you , The Flu is a pandemic every year..
you do you realise the young and healthy can and will still catch it and pass it on, right? unless you're telling me "**** the sick and elderly, we don't need them", it's a concern for everybody.

Jesus H Christ.

It's incredibly infectious and lethal. That's why whole cities are being shut down. That's why medical experts, ie, not dickheads online, are issuing very serious warnings about it.

So here's a stat for you:

Regular kinds of flu have mortality rate of 0.1%. Coronavirus is 2.5%.

Yes, it is 250 times more lethal than routine influenzas.
5 in every 4 people, suck at maths

A leading health expert in Australia (forgotten his name) believes one in four Aussies will get it once this pandemic runs its course. I'm thinking for most people this will just be like having a bad flu, and like a bad flu unless if your very young or old you will get through it fine. But the two week incubation period is scary as you can feel healthy and do your daily routine and still pass the virus on to other people.

The fact carriers have it with no visible symptoms means it will be hard to stop.

Also, one of our closest neighbours Indonesia with a population of 267 Million is in complete denial and is saying it can be halted with prayer.
They are saying they have no one that has tested positive (only 136 tests have been done )

Bali is one of Chinas biggest tourist hot spots, just a matter of time as it makes its way South towards us.

Gold Coast beautician tests positive , authorities trying to locate at least 40 patients, now why only the 40? And not her workmates and their contacts?, Australia has its head up it arse again

Do you think its hard for authorities to contact her workmates?

Think it through.

If it was 1,000 times worse it would be regular flu.

Media hype. Government power grab.
The 2 go hand in hand.

New cases outside China are increasing by roughly 30% a day, and that’s with only South Korea, Italy and Iran having serious outbreaks. At that rate there will be a million infected in 20 days, and it hasn’t touched Africa or South America yet. France is showing signs of losing the handle.

The AFL doesn’t want to talk publicly about the China game or contingency plans for local matches because it will deter people from buying season tickets. It’s all very well to play games in empty stadiums, but it only takes one player or staff member to bring it into a club and they’re practically out of business. 14 days’ quarantine for all will see to that.

Reckon there’s a good chance we’ll lose at least part of the season to the disease.

The mortality rate for those under 50 years of age is something like .20%, so your chances of getting the virus and than actually succumbing to it is akin to winning the lottery. Majority of people dying from this disease are those over 70 and people with compromised immune systems. Of course I wouldn’t be traveling to China at the moment however the global panic and media sensationalism surrounding it is ridiculous.
The flu will kill thousands of people this upcoming winter however no one is panicking about that.

It’s fine to throw numbers around about the flu to reassure yourselves, but most of the deaths occur in third world countries. How many people do you know who’ve died from flu? How many friends or relatives of people you know?

And this ain’t flu.

My GP is bracing himself for a lot of dead 80+ people. 1 in 6 fatality rate for that age.

1 in 12 for post 70.

Kids and people under 50 look to be ok. Most kids aren’t even getting it which is super weird

People who say it’s like the flu etc are wrong. A lot are going to die from this.

Lock your elderly parents away - seriously.

It’s real, it will kill. Yeah sure some will get it and be relatively unaffected.
but for the elderly and those already weakened by sickness it is a real worry.

Now lets forget that you care litttle for people and just consider the fiscal implications , it is already having a massive effect on stock markets Here and overseas.
In Australia alone many industries are already being effected. Our education system which makes its money on overseas students with China being the biggest user, our food exports are being crunched as there are no markets to distribute the goods in China. The lobster industry got smashed this year. Tourism is also had a huge downturn due to the virus.
As time goes on more industries will be effected and the overall cost will be felt hard by all Australians.
Maybe we need another charity football game

Mortality rate:

Normal flu = 0.1%
Swine Flu (2009) = 0.1%
Coronavirus (2020) = 3.4% (overall), 3.6% (China) and 1.5% (outside China).

That's why people are worried, especially for their elderly relatives and for those with suppressed immune systems.

I'm sure I will be fine if I ever contracted the virus, but I'm not sure if my older relatives will cope just as well and I worry for them.

As I said previously, Australians should not be alarmed or panicking at this stage, but it's good to be prepared for the worst case scenario. There's no harm in doing that.

Better to be ridiculed for overreacting than dealing with the fallout due to a lack of preparation to contain the virus.
Come back in a year and tell me the mortality rate

The kids being spared thing is quite interesting.
It's almost a science fiction novel where Baby Boomers get their comeuppance

This is a really good point.
If we accept a good % of the population will get infected then maths say a player or staff member somewhere will as well.

Queensland is about to have a soar in cases you'd suspect..
How easily is it spread. I know it spreads widely because people don't know they have it, so don't take precautions. I'm not sure on rates of contracting it from an ionfected person.
How many of those 40 exposed are likely to have contracted it? If its likely to be one or two, then maybe their families don't have it yet. If the infection rate is higher then its already uncontrolled and probably uncontrollable. It doesn't seem to be that highly infectious, but I haven't seen numbers on that and it is quite likely that under-reporting is common because people think they have a cold (and most will have had a cold or, at worst, another flu strain).

It’s spreads like **** basically. Nowhere near the fatality rate of SARS and MERS but will kill way more. Already has
