I think people overestimate the ability of authorities to contain viruses.

It looks a given majority of people will become infected. It's a question of how severe that is.
Majority as in more than half the worlds population?

If not, then which "majority of people" are you talking about?

This isn’t an all or nothing approach. We need to remain cautious but understand we haven’t got unlimited resources to “contain” the transmission. For instance, we have a finite number of hospitals and doctors, and a finite amount of time for the health professionals to test everyone with coughs and sore throats.

Our first line of defence is our geographic isolation, but it's not worth much if it isn't utilised.

Yeah, if it takes hold here it is likely to overwhelm our medical resources.

If it becomes uncontained here in OZ which would be quite easy for that to happen the season would be stopped.

I am sure Gilligan would have already been briefed about this.

The season wouldn't be stopped. Games would go ahead but with no crowds. It would remain televised to ensure the TV Ang gambling rights contract was upheld.

It's already happening in Europe with the soccer.

There'd be a spike in revenue for Fox / Kayo if it did happen with the AFL.

The scary thing about this virus is that approximately 10% of individuals infected require ICU treatment (respirators, oxygen, HIV antivirals). When the numbers of infected is low thats fine however when that number rises hospitals are quickly over-run. When the hospitals are over-run the death rate rapidly rises as seen in Wuhan and Iran currently. Expect community transmission to be announced in the next 4-7 days within Australia. Large numbers of individuals admitted to hospital in 2-4 weeks time. The cat is well and truly out of the bag (we're in the same position as Italy a week or two ago). This is not like a common cold or the seasonal flu. I have friends who are practicing doctors and they are afraid.

Prepare your family now, don't wait a week or so until the panic sets in. Supermarkets do not carry enough stock for everyone to go at once (if you go to the supermarket you will notice the shelves for canned food, water, toiletries, rice etc are a lot lower than usual). You should ideally have enough food for 2-3 weeks of quarantine. The government isn't always your friend in cases like these. They want to avoid mass public panic. Be prepared.

I see the AFL having to reschedule games/play behind closed doors. It's inevitable with such a high R0. If the AFL wont do it as the virus spreads then the government will force them to.

Perhaps you should look up the meanings of epidemic and pandemic. Or better still break down the words and look up pan, demic and epi

Is your automatic or default response to things you don’t understand to always cry “rascist”?
True I didn’t know the true meaning of pandemic v epidemic however if you think for one minute mainstream media In this country isn’t racist you are living in dreamworld.

Actually, it's a 4% mortality rate for those over the age of 75 with the common flu. With coronavirus it's closer to 2%, and the majority of its victims are over 75 with comorbidities.

It's mostly affecting the elderly as far as deaths are concerned.

The only thing that makes coronavirus worse is that there's no vaccine yet.

It's morbid, but the only good thing about it is that it's checking population growth. Malthus would argue it's natural, normal and necessary.

This is incorrect. The mortality rate is closer to 15% in the above 70 bracket and that's with hospital intervention. As soon as the hospitals are overwhelmed (10% of all cases require hospital intervention) expect the mortality rate to rise in all age groups.

Hardly a conspiracy, look at the pictures coming out of Korea, Italy and even the US today (hint its empty shelves). The highly optimized nature of our supply chains mean that they are easily overwhelmed. Choose to ignore it if you want but you will be singing to a different tune in a few weeks time when community transmission occurs here.

So by your reckoning there will be lucky to be a few thousand at the rd 1 Richmond v Carlton game as most of the population will be in lockdown?

So we cancelling the season now?

Don't worry, in the post-coronavirus world there is a new season upon us

Lucky we live in Perth most isolated city in the World , if it hits hard here then the rest of the World is stuffed . That's my only saviour .

That's me, I don't see a doctor for any kind of flu, I'd need to be pretty sick to go to the docs.
Good man.

Good for you but this kind of thing sh*ts me depending on your job.

I get annoyod at people who come to work in an office job and brag about what a soldier they are for coming in sick.

Fine for you but dont come in and infect everybody else just to be a hero.

For all you know, someone picks up the bug and has to go home to a baby or elderly person.
