Prepare your family now, don't wait a week or so until the panic sets in. Supermarkets do not carry enough stock for everyone to go at once (if you go to the supermarket you will notice the shelves for canned food, water, toiletries, rice etc are a lot lower than usual). You should ideally have enough food for 2-3 weeks of quarantine.

I have the Uber Eats app. I will be fine.

Hardly a conspiracy, look at the pictures coming out of Korea, Italy and even the US today (hint its empty shelves). The highly optimized nature of our supply chains mean that they are easily overwhelmed. Choose to ignore it if you want but you will be singing to a different tune in a few weeks time when community transmission occurs here.

All that suggests is people are prone to panic and stupid. If youre that worried about running out of toilet paper then install a bidet. This prepper stuff is pretty easy to figure out.

Looks like this thing is going into stage two. They have lost containment and its basically in every country now.

This year is going to be very different to a normal year. Shortages of some items will happen at some point. But this is nothing. The old and the weak will stugglee and before the drugs to fight this come into full swing there will be elevated death rates.

I live up in Darwin, born and bred. If this virus gets out to the indigenous communities it will kill hundreds if not thousands. So many older people with diabetes, kidney failure and other existing health issues. Remote indigenous communities are very vulnerable.

Good for you but this kind of thing sh*ts me depending on your job.

I get annoyod at people who come to work in an office job and brag about what a soldier they are for coming in sick.

Fine for you but dont come in and infect everybody else just to be a hero.

For all you know, someone picks up the bug and has to go home to a baby or elderly person.

Its still a BS Australian stigma to not come to work if crook.

In the past couole of years I changed and stay home if Im starting to feel crook, even say I wont come to work and spread it.

But when you get back people take the micky and say your soft.

The scary thing about this virus is that approximately 10% of individuals infected require ICU treatment (respirators, oxygen, HIV antivirals). When the numbers of infected is low thats fine however when that number rises hospitals are quickly over-run. When the hospitals are over-run the death rate rapidly rises as seen in Wuhan and Iran currently. Expect community transmission to be announced in the next 4-7 days within Australia. Large numbers of individuals admitted to hospital in 2-4 weeks time. The cat is well and truly out of the bag (we're in the same position as Italy a week or two ago). This is not like a common cold or the seasonal flu. I have friends who are practicing doctors and they are afraid.

I see the AFL having to reschedule games/play behind closed doors. It's inevitable with such a high R0. If the AFL wont do it as the virus spreads then the government will force them to.
Where are you getting your numbers Bush_Chook ?

This is incorrect. The mortality rate is closer to 15% in the above 70 bracket and that's with hospital intervention. As soon as the hospitals are overwhelmed (10% of all cases require hospital intervention) expect the mortality rate to rise in all age groups.

Caucasians have x5 less ace2 expression or receptors the virus latches on to compared to east asian individuals. It can't accumulate on an individual to near the same extent. I have searched google and am yet to find a single confirmed caucasian case of covid 19. I'm wondering if google are censuring such results in fear of racism when reality is there are biological differences in ace2 expression between ethnicities. Would be nice to not have the facts hidden/censored so I could assess my own risk.

Actually, it's a 4% mortality rate for those over the age of 75 with the common flu. With coronavirus it's closer to 2%, and the majority of its victims are over 75 with comorbidities.

It's mostly affecting the elderly as far as deaths are concerned.

The only thing that makes coronavirus worse is that there's no vaccine yet.

It's morbid, but the only good thing about it is that it's checking population growth. Malthus would argue it's natural, normal and necessary.
You’re way off with your stats

This is alarmist rubbish. There are 195 soveteign countries in the world. 59 have reported cases of the virus. It's not 'basically in every country now'.

So by your reckoning there will be lucky to be a few thousand at the rd 1 Richmond v Carlton game as most of the population will be in lockdown?

Impossible to say. Have considered that it might be smarter to watch on TV, depending on how things play out.

As soon as people who haven't travelled get it the wider public will go mental and run on the supermarkets. It happened in Italy, it won't be any different here. So even if you are not worried about the virus being a dangerous pandemic, you should be worried about the public acting irrationally in response once it is here. I'm stocked up on the basics for that reason. If it fizzles out, meh, I'll only have to buy fruit and veg for a couple of months. If you haven't stocked up and there is a run on the supermarkets, enjoy wiping your arse with your hand.

That’s the thing

while it’s easy to make fun of alarmists if they cause a run on supermarkets then logic goes out the window

Wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it’s 50%. Heard some guy from the WHO saying that the the aim is for below 50% which suggests it could get higher

Shat my pants when I heard that
You know it’s not fatal for the majority of people? Already many have recovered and are now immune.

Many workplaces demand a medical certificate for even only one day off. Doctors’ waiting rooms will be chockablock.

Being compared to the Spanish flu in 1918 where a flu virus strain gains a bird virus and wiped out 1/3 of the world's population ....100 years on we are better prepared though !!
Perth premier saying restrictions on public transport and big events being considered but not as yet , August when virus could be most prevalent in WA/ AUST .

I think your stats re a third of the population are a tad incorrect
