Unfortunately you are right. There are too many keyboard warriors who only read about tragic world events in history books. They rock up to work sick and expect a medal for their bravery. Meanwhile they pass on their sickness to their co-workers and everyone suffers. Same thing will happen in Oz. Every ignorant scrub who has never faced adversity in their life will go on travelling and behaving like nothing is different. Trouble is we have an aging population and all the baby boomers will be at risk. My father has been having regular immunotherapy treatment for melanoma cancer the past few years. About 4 years ago he had his spleen and one axillary node removed. If COVID-19 infects him he is a goner...

I wish our government took a much more aggressive approach to this. We are so lucky to be bordered by ocean, yet we let people fly in from all over the world still despite the outbreak being relatively close to us in those neighbouring Asian countries.
Lol a person is infectious for 2 to 3 weeks for the flu. Good luck taking 2 weeks off work every time you are sick.

Change “weeks” for “days” and you’re a lot closer to the truth here.

This type of ignorance highlights how hard it will be to stop covid-19 when it hits our shores.

10k admissions doesnt mean 10k people affected by the virus to the point they need hospitalisation. Most of those would be overreactors insisting they have it or precautionary admissions. And over what time period? Perth just needs to chillax and everything will be fine.
Unfortuantely they will be in intensive care with organ failure. Doubt anyone can fake that by over reacting.

I’m reading from multiple sources that a vaccine will be another year. Where are you reading that? Source. Lots of people are chucking in random supposed facts with no source

You’re right about the age distribution of the fatality rate but what people are concerned about is that it will knock out a huge number in that age group. Containing it with the younger mob is about trying not to make them spreaders as they will spread it to the oldies who will drop like flies

Edit: your overall stats are not even slightly close to anything I’m reading. Seriously, where are getting your facts? Your cynicism about the media is fine but I imagine you’re reading something to feel so confident ?
Vaccine: by chance Israel had been working on a vaccine for a similar coronavirus when this outbreak started. They project they are 3 months from getting it completed, add a month for some trial completions, that's 4 months best scenario.

Well another 5 Italian football Serie A games were postponed on the weekend after 4 last week. Today they've closed the Louvre. Whether some think it's mild or not this is having a big impact and may well impact AFL.

2% death rate, and mostly affecting those already vulnerable.. hate to sound harsh but if the whole world got it, which is seeming an increasingly likely outcome and we shed 2% of the world population, would that really be a bad thing.

The scary thing about this virus is that approximately 10% of individuals infected require ICU treatment (respirators, oxygen, HIV antivirals). When the numbers of infected is low thats fine however when that number rises hospitals are quickly over-run. When the hospitals are over-run the death rate rapidly rises as seen in Wuhan and Iran currently. Expect community transmission to be announced in the next 4-7 days within Australia. Large numbers of individuals admitted to hospital in 2-4 weeks time. The cat is well and truly out of the bag (we're in the same position as Italy a week or two ago). This is not like a common cold or the seasonal flu. I have friends who are practicing doctors and they are afraid.

Prepare your family now, don't wait a week or so until the panic sets in. Supermarkets do not carry enough stock for everyone to go at once (if you go to the supermarket you will notice the shelves for canned food, water, toiletries, rice etc are a lot lower than usual). You should ideally have enough food for 2-3 weeks of quarantine. The government isn't always your friend in cases like these. They want to avoid mass public panic. Be prepared.

I see the AFL having to reschedule games/play behind closed doors. It's inevitable with such a high R0. If the AFL wont do it as the virus spreads then the government will force them to.

Yep, they will quarantine you and then let you starve because you didnt buy tins of baked beans.

FMD the people in this world 🤦‍♂️

Most countries are implementing a ban of 5000+ people gathering in a closed roof environment, will be annoying for those at Docklands who might get wet..

Switzerland has apparently cancelled all events attracting more than a thousand people, including the Basel carnival (Moomba equivalent), Geneva Motor Show and Basel Watch Fair, with soccer and hockey to be played in empty stadiums.

And they have only 24 cases.

Depends if that 2% includes you, your parents, your brother, your sister, your partner, your child or your best friend wouldn’t you say?

They also border Italy's north where the outbreak is out of control.

No that would be a selfish way to look at it. The world is over populated, especially in the developing countries who are going to be least likely to be able to manage an outbreak.

Organ failure. I mean honestly.

Can you lot calm down already?

Try saying that to a 70 year old on immune suppressants and poor health. i.e both my father and father in law.

No one should panic or run for the hills but people should also accept that there are some vulnerable groups that this can and will likely effect in a very bad way.

Have they closed down shopping centres or are those allowed to continue operating, no AFL game will get postponed because some people get the sniffles.

This is a truly bizarre thread; people seem to either take the position of impending doomsday prepping, or complete denial.

Surely even if you believe there's nothing to see here, the basics of slightly obsessive handwashing hygiene is worthwhile, if only to reduce the risk of grandparents or elderly parents catching anything.

Does it cause organ failure? That's the nonsense I was replying to

If it was the sniffles they wouldn’t have cancelled the Italian soccer matches or locked down a Chinese city of 10 million people. This has the potential to seriously affect our ageing population and overwhelm our hospitals even if it only gives you ‘the sniffles’.

The people that are claiming this is nothing should educate themselves or share where they are getting there information from because EVERYTHING I am reading in global news has gotten a lot more alarming in the past 7 days and experts aren’t as flippantly ignorant of the risk as the average punter in the street seems to be.

To say the AFL won’t postpone games when this is clearly the global trend is just ignorance of the highest order.

The world health organizations fact finding mission to China has found that of the 20% of infected persons who require hospital care 15% require oxygen canisters and 5 percent require artifical breathing via machines. This puts a massive strain on resources.
