I think a few ie a handful need to find out what our aboriginal programs are all about and not make a wide sweeping statement that they can help anyone because they are aboriginal.

Our programs are fully funded programs by specific grants - government and private organisations - to deliver different objectives to Aboriginal youth - ie those at school - not those who have left school and are adults. The programs do not deliver alcohol or drug counselling to adults. Nor do they deliver anger management counseling to adults. Read this page for more detailed info but basically they cover the following programs and these activities.

Aboriginal Power Cup
Power Community Ltd works in partnership with SAASTA, the SA Aboriginal Sports Training Academy, to run a unique program targeted at Aboriginal students in Years 10 to 12 – the Aboriginal Power Cup. ie the club uses footy to engageyoung people in education, promoting healthy lifestyle choices and developing teamwork, leadership and life skills.

The Government of South Australia and Santos are Major Partners of the program, with support from Transfield Services, UniSA, Maxima, Defence Force Recruiting, Aboriginal Health Council of SA, MAC, SA Dental and DASSA.

WillPOWER
The WillPOWER program encourages students to tap into their WillPOWER both mentally and physically. PAFC players and staff use real life experiences to connect with the students and engage them on various topics.

Aboriginal AFL Academy
WillPOWER engages and motivates Aboriginal students in Years 6-9, encouraging them to lead a healthy life, play team sport and commit to education. WillPOWER also promotes self-discipline, identity and expression of culture. WillPOWER is delivered in both metropolitan and regional schools, and will be launched in the Northern Territory in 2014.

WillPOWER is supported by the Aboriginal Health Council of SA and SA Dental Service.

Aboriginal Leadership Program
Students in Years 11 and 12
who excel in the Aboriginal Power Cup are invited to participate in a two-day leadership program at Alberton Oval. Participants attend various workshops where they explore both individual and team goals, career pathways and leadership. Our partners, including Santos, UniSA and Defence Force Recruiting spend time with each student to discuss their education, training and career pathways.

Cultural Awareness program
The Power Cultural Awareness Program aims to raise awareness of Aboriginal people and communities, understanding history of Aboriginal people discuss issues impacted on Aboriginal lives including the Stolen Generations, Closing the Gap etc.

Central Corridor Strategy
Power Community Ltd has an agenda to deliver community programs throughout South Australia and the Northern Territory. Power Community Ltd has two Board Directors placed in the Northern Territory, one in Tennant Creek and one in Darwin. The club delivers the WillPOWER program in Alice Springs and other places.

So there is nothing there for Jurrah to participate in. A couple of people have erroneously lumped Krak in with Jurrah. Krak has been one of the staff members who have delivered the program to the kids. Jurrah cant do that until he gets sober and gets control of his violence issues, and gets trained to be a trainer.

Krak, Gavin, Byron, Paully V, Taliqua Clancy, Wade Thompson etc go out to far flung communities and deliver these programs to kids and adult members who might sit in, but basically kids. Guys like Patty Ryder and Aidyn Johnson were impressed with our indigenous programs because they are all about stopping kids from falling into the gaps that have left so many others disadvantaged. The programs arent about helping adults who have fallen deep into those gaps and dont want to make much of an effort to get out. That is a completely different level of social work and social programs and needs long term professionals to run those, not a footy club looking to do good things with and inspire the next generation.

I don’t really think ex-convicts deserve to be treated as sub-human like many in here seem to imply. however I doubt very strongly that we would take Liam Jurrah as its not a good play in terms of risk vs reward.

People are capable of changing at any stage in their lives, but it requires wanting to change and the support to do so, along with a strong belief that they can. The complexities of this seem lost on most people, and its seems easier to call someone a piece of shit rather than think of them as human. Which I believe is a mistake.

Like I said don’t think we’d pick him up but if we did even though he’d have a lot of work to do to prove himself, if he won a norm smith medal it wouldn’t change his past but everyone on here would love him.

I think most were pretty happy when the club offered him a hand, once. But recidivism seems to be the problem here.

it was hilarious the first time around, not quite as funny this time around. at least the bleeding heart effwits aren't labelling everyone a racist if they don't want him here this time, geez they were funny days.

He has the right as does any player to be discussed about taking into account his history. However if he does get a fair go lets just look at him from a pure football stand point.

At his best jurrah was an athletic undersized full forward sharing a forward line with jack watts with a melbourne midfield so what he was able to accomplish while there is quite astounding. However he has been out of the game for so long and like krakouer will take a couple-three years to get his fitness base back up. This was krakouers second year back and he was still struggling fitness wise.

Now referring to the prior made statement and the time frame for endurance base. We're talking when he is 29,30,31 he will be ready for afl footy playing a couple games here and there possibly even if he is most likely to be a rookie. Do we really need this? Nope. Palmer/houston?/howard will be afl ready by then and looms as schulz' third forward replacement. I severly doubt jurrah will be to jump as high or be as quick at that stage when he relies on them as his main strengths.

Its a respectful no for our club for me. The bloke is trying to get his life back on track hopefully some of our programs can assist him. All the best of luck to him but just cant see him in a port guernsey

Paul Vandenbergh and Byron Pickett could take him under their wing vis-a-vis their current indigenous welfare roles in an unofficial capacity.

Beyond that, yeah. Not much more we can do.

Jurrah is ready to work towards AFL return

Could he follow a similar path to the Krak to make his way back?

Would be wish to make a return through Port given our support?

Would you want the high flying Jurrah back?

I would love to help a guy like Jurrah out if I thought he could help himself. at the same time his F ups haven't been of a minor nature and one questions whether he deserves another chance.

So that a definite no and maybe from me.

I feel incredibly sorry for Liam.

When he left his community he couldn't speak English. He went aways chasing dreams. In the end, he probably should have never left his community. When he left he was well respected and a leader, when he came back he was, well we all know how he was. I'm not saying he isn't responsible for his actions, he is. I just wish he'd never played a game of AFL for his sake - it's extremely hard to assimilate for people from such small, remote communities and completely different cultures.

For the record I voted FNO.

I see the Chevrons and PB being a big part of Liam's life..............

though these are the ones he's steered himself towards

I have to disagree here guys. The responsibility for the indigenous population of Australia falls back onto every member of society. We introduced many detrimental things into their lives when we came here, yet we continue to let them live in 3rd world conditions and treat them as 3rd class citizens, and we don't let them maintain their own language, culture and customs that we feel goes against the western lifestyle. We as a society have a responsibility here to fix our wrongs, to understand why certain things happen in the indigenous community, to educate the indigenous population and give them the best possible life that they can have. Helping Jurrah will not solve these problems, but it is a start and everything has to start somewhere.
After reading this load of socialist rubbish I reckon this thread should be shut down before any real agro starts , you wanna play politics , do it somewhere else.

Everyone deserves another chance. Good people do bad things. Carey was an acholic and a coke head most of his career. Shutting someone out because of previous mistakes has never helped anyone move forward. To be honest, even if he never played in the afl again, but got his life sorted through playing in the maggies id be happy and proud of the club.

I voted no, not because of political views, etc...etc... It's just a basic common sense decision, something the club has already done once. Initially when it was 1st brought up after he was delisted by Melbourne I was all for snapping him up, but seeing what has happened since my view has changed.

Won't forget that grab he took against in the dark period (2011 I think it was, happy to stand corrected), was right in front where I was sitting. It was an amazing grab.
