Random COVID tests to be conducted after Gold Coast survey finds up to 90 per cent of positive cases don't know they have it

Lol wtf

Lol can picture it like an RBT. In the distance you see guys in hazmats and then get out and do a runner.

Riiiight so Queensland is going to ramp up their testing to "find" more cases of a disease so deadly 90% of people don't even know they have it.

Imagine the panic in that meeting room, "this thing is dying before our eyes, we NEED those case numbers damnit!"

I tell ya what as we live in a democracy at some point in the future we get to go an election and decide if our government has done a good job or not, thus proving that we don’t live in a dictatorship. Is this correct?

What’s dying before their eyes in Queensland is dozens of people a day.

The people that get it and don’t know they have it could be the ones passing it on to the elderly, the vulnerable or the plain unlucky.

Seems difficult to get the idea through to some people that things sometimes have consequences for other people.

"If I don't check in and don't have symptoms and don't get tested, I don't have COVID and should be able to do what I want".

If grandma is vaccinated, the stats presented here from NSW and Vic show she only has 0.01% chance of ending up in ICU (and that doesn't even take into account the 90% of people aren't even aware they have it).

Dunno where you got that “stat” from but I’m guessing it’s not age-adjusted.

If the chances of a person over 70, or over 80, ending up in ICU from an infection were 0.01% we wouldn’t be seeing death tolls at the levels we are.

Why not put all our resources into protecting the vulnerable instead of wasting them on randomly testing people who aren't sick for a disease that 90% (according to that "survey") of people don't even know they have.

The same old tiresome moral superiority argument is beyond ridiculous at this point

Australia has stopped pushing for low or asymptomatic cases to be tested. So if folks end up with a sore throat runny nose, they're popping a butter menthol and going about their lives.

WA was doing far more PCR testing mid last year when there were less cases than now.

Depends if you can only vote for the party.

No I don't think its age adjusted. Also, the stat was posted up here yesterday by someone demonstrating the effectiveness of vaccines and I have not checked its source. Point stands though. If 90% of people aren't being added to case number stats then surely we are getting into - dare I say it - cold and flu season type levels of public health risk.

Hi everyone

Some exciting news from the Northern corridor

Covid may be in my house.

So, my eldest daughters boyfriend goes to SEDA college Wembley

He got a call today that his teacher has tested positive and he is to test immediately and self isolate for 14 days (regardless of result)

If he tests positive, then are we in the same boat, plus my middle daughters girlfriend (as she was also here) as we will be deemed close contacts...

If he is negative, then life goes on. For now.

Bit of a hectic morning here - had to pull my 7 yr old of PS and they have asked for discretion until test results come in.

I very nearly caught the train to work today but decided I cbf'd and WFH instead

Fingers crossed he (the BF) returns a negative.

How do you do that?

Not all the vulnerable are in nursing homes and hospitals. Plenty of them are wandering round the community. How do you pump resources into protecting them other than by ensuring the people around them aren’t going to infect them?

Now you’ve done it!! It’s finally made it’s way from south to North. I knew we should’ve built that wall

Ahah

My first reaction was, You just had to see your boyfriend didn't you?" lol

NSW, Vic and Qld recorded a total of 80 deaths in the last day.

That seems a little higher than even a bad cold and flu season.

Give them free access to proper masks. Give them free access to tests for them and their loved ones. Make sure they are all fully boosted and have first access to any new vaccines/treatments. Don't waste time and resources randomly testing healthy people.

And at the end of the day, if they want to take on the risk of going out and about, that's their call too.

If 90% of people don't even know they have it, it isn't some big scary deadly disease that the huge majority of the population need to be under restrictions over.

Just seen that Canteen Trigg is now an exposure site, it’s creeping closer to me! How far North are you guys?
Near Joondalup

All good ideas.

They can’t really just decide to not go out and about though. They need day to day items, medical care, etc. Not all of them have people in their lives that can do their running around for them.

Quite incredible how much cases have stopped at the river 🤣
When the worlds deadliest virus saw what was in that river it thought
