My son's primary school emphasises learning about indigenous culture and the kids try their hands at indigenous style art with impressive results. It certainly helps lay the groundwork for future progress.
We've thankfully moved on from Alan McAllister's "As long as they conduct themselves like white people" gaffe, which exemplified the unconscious racism & sense of superiority prevalent in the recent past, but there is still a long way to go.
We had a smoking ceremony for Sorry Day.
The kids are really connected to this.

I love a good bible quote but the Aboriginal people did pretty well without Jesus.

In fact, his religion caused them a lot of grief.

I think what we have here, and always have had, is a refusal to value Aboriginal history.

50,000 years + is just too much for some to fathom, so they deny it.
I wasn't aiming to bring religion in just the sentiment of the quote.

I absolutely believe in that quote. Also love do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Really. We have lived through more momentous change that any generation that's gone before us. The world view is eons different from what it was when we grew up. The possibilities are so different, not all better.

I think rather than being so polarised we need to try and step into each others shoes a bit.

I listen to my partners views sometimes and go wow. She has strong views. Sicilian/Napolitano mix so what do you expect. When she talks of growing up in Australia and being told by her parents not to worry about the taunts, fit in and work hard. That was their mantra. I understand why she sees the world a bit differently to I.

With the old young argument, which I think has got pretty toxic, neither side wants to understand the other. If the current old dinosaurs die off the next generation will have their own dinosaurs to replace ours. Biblical is out of fashion but "let he (should be they I guess) who has not sinned caste the first stone" has a lot of merit

I’m not sure we’re entirely disagreeing GC, but yes I know quite a few old dinosaurs who are rigid in their views and won’t change them. So the sooner they go the better as far as I’m concerned, and then maybe this country can finally grow up.

The bold is the same message we got as kids from our parents, they also added, 'they really don't mean to be 'mean', just turn the other cheek. We kids didn't;).

Yep we all got "sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you".

But there was always a hierarchy and growing it was still pretty strong. Pre WW2 it was pretty much British Protestant ruling with the Irish Catholics strongly discriminated against while the first nations populations were barely even recognised. Post war, where us older types grew up, the Italian and Greek influx meant they suffered a lot of discrimination while the previous divisions were still strong. Then the waves of Vietnamese, Asian, African came in for their issues

But growing up in the 60's and 70's the Greek Italian population copped a lot of racial discrimination, moreso than the Celtic background and the Indigenous kids, who were few in Victoria, remained transparent. Thats my recall anyway.

I also remember going to the Repat Hospital in the 80's to work and study and the old diggers and their wives had an unbridled hatred of the Japanese that shocked but was more understandable when you considered wht they had been through and the stories they were exposed to.

I think though that the racism has always been there for Aboriginal Australians.
Unlike other groups, they were considered sub human for so long. Subjected to the most awful treatment. There really is no comparison.

You’re being very balanced. As one of the oldies under discussion, I’m fearful the country won’t achieve much change until the dinosaurs die out. That includes me, although voting yes.
There will be different oldies and different change to oppose.

Most oldies understandably don't like change:
a) they find it harder to adapt
b) it's being demanded that they change the world view that they've lived their whole lives with

Absolutely. That's what I meant by transparent, they were not even seen to a large degree.

I’m an oldie and I’m impatient for change. I also don’t understand why people are resistant to it. But I know plenty who are, and the resistance will prevent the Voice from getting up. Sad for our country.

I was talking more generally than this issue. But yeah I struggle to see a reason why you wouldn't vote yes for the voice. I'm pretty surprised how effective the bullshitting no campaign has been. It's the fact that so many have been swayed with a massive shift in polls as a result of such nonsense that I find the most concerning. The lack of critical thinking is a bit scary. We're more Trumpable than I thought we were. Hopefully the polls are inaccurate. If the polls started like this, I'd just say that we as a country aren't ready for this, but changing your opinion on the tripe that has been dished up? WTF?

I’m not surprised at all. This country will need another ten years to accept any kind of real change.

I had my Grandson over last weekend.7 years old.

Took him with me for a walk around the local Sunday markets. At one of them were several Yes campaigners offering pamphlets. As we walked past some heading back to the car, one of them asked if I wanted some info, I said No thanks, I've got it, then she said to Ty did he want a badge? of course he did and put it on soon as we got back to the car.

I asked him if he knew what the badge was, he said No.(It said, I'm voting yes)

I asked him if he'd heard about the referendum about the Aboriginal Voice. He said that he had and he thought it was a good idea as it would help out the poor Aboriginal people.

I said cool, just wanted to make sure you knew what you were wearing, and left it at that.

When my daughter picked him up, I explained about the badge, she was cool as she's voting yes too. Kid kept interrupting saying "I'm voting yes" and we both told him to chill as he wouldn't be voting on anything for 11 years. ;)

Fixed.

The amount of simpletons running around thinking that a voice to parliament means they will have thier houses and land seized has to be seen to be believed.
But it’s out there. These simpletons actually believe the No campaigns lies. I suppose if you aim your whole campaign on lies and fear, then it really appeals to simpletons, the lowest common denominators and out right racists.
And boo hoo for anyone who gets upset when I call them out 9n anyone of those three things.
Grow a brain.

Let the kids vote instead of the red necks!
