It's been less than two years since covid arrived in Australia. Closer to 1.5 years.

That's not enough time to train new doctors or nurses in great numbers (unless we lower standards...), nor has it been possible to import trained doctors and nurses because a) borders are closed and b) they're kinda needed where they are anyway as most places have been hit far harder than we have.

And despite that, the number of doctors and nurses has in fact increased in WA hospitals.

The issue will be how much burnout is being suffered by the people already in the system.

Queensland opening up for Christmas.

Next move is yours Mark.

Surely there’d be some benefit in saying “if we get to x per cent double vaxxed by this date, we’ll reopen, over to you guys to get the level up there”.

The uncertainty seems to be hindering us.

and speaking of nurses -

Mr Dawson’s comments echoed Health Minister Roger Cook’s who criticised nurses who attended the ‘freedom day’ rally in Perth on Saturday.
“I just quite simply do not understand how you can dedicate your life to medical science, but on this issue choose to step away from that science and adopt strange, weird sort of attitudes towards the COVID-19 vaccine,” he said.

“I don’t understand how you can, on the one hand, inject your patients, day in day out with different medications that we know are safe but when it comes to COVID-19, decide that all those protocols which decide those drugs are safe are no longer relevant.”

Can't remember the exact quote but at Daniel Andrews press conference yesterday he said something along lines of "I won't keep trying to protect those who refuse to protect themselves".

If the morons at these protests get sick they better not start clogging up the hospitals.

I think this goes for a lot of industries, hard finding skilled labour at the moment, a hell of a lot is being sucked up to the mines. In the past we would just import it to make up the shortfall. Everyone I talk to seems to be working longer and harder to make up the difference. I reckon there's a hell of a lot of people pretty close to burning out.

Without a doubt the uncertainty is creating hesitancy/complacency. Around 15% according to Dawson (5% won't get it at all).

Most can see now that setting a date/firm target is the way to go. Be interesting to see how long McGowan can hold out for.

There doesn't seem to be any real reason not to at least release the modelling they are working off

"Any requests for any information in terms of the modelling from the health department or potential dates for reopening are not being shared."

It's political. If you don't give a date, then you can chop and change as you see fit.

So, are we going to cancel those white elephant custom quarantine facilities they are planning to build?
What if the next variant is worse?

Prior to covid, researchers were screaming at governments that we needed to be ready for this. This was GOING to happen. It will happen again.

Added to this thawing permafrost is releasing virus’ that we have no natural immunity to.

These facilities can also be used for natural disasters or temporary accomodation such as when planeloads of refugees arrive such as in the bosnian / serb war etc.

I'm sure it will happen again, the question is, how often? Big buildings take a fair of upkeep and the last pandemic was 100 years ago. You're right about refugees etc, that might give it enough use to keep open and allow them to close others.

As well as temp accomodation for natural disasters etc

No closer to any certainty.

Undoubtedly sentiment in the community is changing. How long he can hold out for will be interesting to watch.

I understand holding off on relaxing the border completely until the vaccine rate is high (though I think setting a date would give people more motivation to get vaccinated), but I don't understand why we can't lessen the controls to at least allow people to return to the state with proper precautions. What's wrong with allowing double vaccinated people that need to test negative 72 hours before departure and do 14 days quarantine at home?

Western Australia is including those 12+ in their vaccination figures
73.2 per cent of eligible West Australians have received one vaccine dose, and 54.7 per cent have received two doses.
"This is based on the eliginle popualtion of people aged 12 years and over," Mr McGowan says.
"Given those 12 years and over have been eligible for the vaccine for over a month, WA is now including this cohort in our eligible population rate.
"This is different to other major states on the east coast, but I think it makes complete sense to include those children who are eligible for the vaccine in our vaccination rate."
"On current projections, 60 per cent of West Australians aged 12 and over will be fully vaccinated by the end of the week."

Border is open with Qld from Friday, no quarantine required either way.

Thats good news but the second qld opens to nsw and vic up she will go again.
Interesting he was happy to write off the damage to tourism which is going to happen when everywhere but wa opens to other states.

“Queensland is very reliant on tourists from NSW and Victoria and obviously that period over January is the strongest time for their tourism industry” so its no worry to him.
Makes him look silly for the money he pumps into tourism wa to try and attract people to the state.

That's my worry too - but I need to get to Brissy for work so this works for me for now.

I think this would be a fair thing so families can reunite for xmas.

I guess its a genie in the bottle thing - delta is a pig to put back in that bottle once its out.

UK faces calls for ‘Plan B’ with coronavirus cases high and rising
Many scientists are pressing the British government to reimpose social restrictions and speed up booster vaccinations as coronavirus infection rates, already Europe’s highest, rise still further.
The UK recorded 49,156 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, the largest number since mid-July. New infections averaged 43,000 a day over the past week, a 15 per cent increase compared to the week before.

Makes for interesting reading, deaths don't seem to be out of control in comparison to early on in the pandemic but a lot of the vulnerable would likely have already died. And I'm sure all the families of people who are dying would prefer they hadn't...

Hospitalisations seem to have steadied in the UK too

One interesting tidbit is that booster shots are on the horizon. Will be interesting to see the uptake.

It also marks the beginning of preparations to administer vaccine booster shots.

Details of that program are expected later this month, but Mr Hunt suggested boosters would first be rolled out in aged care homes.

"We have the supply, we have the mechanism. The last part is the medical advice and the medical approval," he said.

Another reason for the folks in WA that are already "waiting" to get vaxxed to wait a bit longer.

And those that got in early are probably going to need boosters before it's "safe to open"
