Something seems off about this, why was the person filming it in the first place? I don't think it was a random unprovoked attack, there must have been an argument first, still no excuse for that though.

Person was filming because he was watching a cowardly assault that needed to be shared so the perpetrator could be identified

once the government actually gets tough with penalties for these dickheads it might stop.

Until then these w***ers are going to carry on knowing that they will get a slap on the wrist at best
Agreed. This is the problem. The punishment just isn’t enough. This kind of incident warrants not only a permanent ban from football venues but also jail time. Seriously. That deserves jail time. The risk of the victim getting killed from hitting his head on the concrete should attract 5 years inside.

The person that punched and killed the Doctor at Box Hill hospital a few years ago got 10 years. 10 years. I could walk down the street and stab someone 30 times and it’s murder, I get life. Why isn’t what this moron did at the hospital deserving of a life sentence?

The courts and government won’t stop this until this Melbourne supporter gets dragged into a courtroom and given 5 years in jail. You hit someone hard enough or in the sweet spot and they’ll be knocked out before they hit the ground, then it’s just a dead weight hitting the concrete with absolutely no protection.

In my opinion someone that does this and kills someone gets a minimum 30 years in jail and no parole. If you’re 50 then you see your last days in a cell. If you’re 20 then the bulk of your life is lived in the can.

As far as this idiot goes? Permanent ban from all sport and 5 years in jail. No parole. No bail.

The AFL just needs to come out and ban any fighting at all with a lifetime ban.

That was pathetic
I'd generally agree. But in an instance where it was retaliation for a serious reason I'm a little more forgiving. Though tbh I can't think of many, but there's always that strange exception.

Unprovoked or not the victim could’ve been killed. Yet we wait for the victim to get seriously hurt before dishing out a punishment reflective of the crime. Get on the front foot and lock the idiot up for 5. Sends a message.

If you're hitting people in public, are you really going into it thinking about "gee, I might only get a light penalty for this!"? Are you even thinking at all?

Potential punishments or sentencing don't incentivise or deincentivise bad behaviour. Alcohol doesn't cause it either, it might just help draw the curtain back on what's already inside someone. You've got to have that mental f**kery in your make-up somewhere already to do this sort of thing.

Yeah I'm not condoning it, draw and quarter the mug for all I care, I'm just pointing out we didn't see the whole thing.

If you orchestrate a public campaign against this behaviour though and the punishment is seriously heavy, it might stop some people. Might. I know what you’re saying, but unfortunately you can’t give light sentences. This is high grade manslaughter. You’ve got to give someone life for a one punch hit that kills someone.

To put it in perspective, there was an inmate executed in Texas last year whose crime was to drive past a home and spray it with bullets believing no one was there, as a warning or intimidatory practice. Turns out there was someone inside who copped one in the head and was killed.

Did he plan on killing someone? No. Were his actions dangerous? Yes. It’s exactly the same as a one punch hit.

I'd take a guess and say they were probably recording something else like a moment with friends, a view of the ground, a celebration of the win but the moment that happened it took priority.

There’s been that many people killed from one punch attacks that my first reaction really should be to keep calm just in case I lay someone out and it goes south.
Im not denying that at all

There's a reason we have courts. They assess each case. It's not and never will be a blanket penalty.

What if someone walked up and spat in your face? I know I'd be throwing cut lunches.
Say the person was known to them, say that very person got off a serious crime, say they rubbed it in their faces... So many situations where something could happen. Hence not being able apply a blanket penalty.

Not worth it. Seriously. I am close to 100kg and I am pretty fit and strong. I could really hurt someone if I wanted. Someone spits in my face and I belt them just a bit hard and I end up killing them? I’d accept getting spat in the face as a trade off to going to jail and ruining my life.

The difference between you and me is self control.

My point is the courts assess each case but people don’t get appropriately punished.
Not disagreeing at all. You are better off killing someone in Australia then robbing the Govt....

I just disagree that every penalty is set in stone. That's why courts make a judgement call.

Talk is cheap.
