Judd by a mile
Judd took the whole side on his back to the finals
Cripps took the wholeside on his back and it broke him
Interesting timing - the very next day after this post, Cripps picks up 27 touches, 3 goals and 3 Brownlow votes in our first win in 2 months. The first of 10 straight wins that he plays in on the way to a prelim.

Maybe the Curnow Camp was overrated and the bump was the catalyst. :p

Reckon better player and better captain are two separate discussions.

Judd the better player. Cripps better captain.

Not sure why anyone would compare Judd's playing skills with any player tbh, clearly one of the best in the AFL.

Agree that Cripps has been the better captain.

So you have a choice Judd or Cripps to play center in your side (Carlton, remember the club is bigger than the individual) this weekend, or any weekend.

Who gets the pivot role?

I think Judd will comfortably go down the greater AFL player but Cripps the greater Carlton player given his longevity with us. If he captains us to a flag, he'll be well in the clear.
If Judd was picked by us in his draft year, he would have been the greatest player to ever play for the club…

Except for Jezza…

Always thought Kade Simpson should've got captain ahead of Judd, as he was "more Carlton" if that makes any sense?

Cripps the better captain.

He most likely would have been traded to a better side after 3-4 years.

Judd is the better player and overall AFL legend.

Cripps is the better Carltonian and leader. Still an immense player himself, but not at Judds level. But, is a better galvanising clubman.

Cripps, with the idea of releasing Judd more on the outside.

My timing was impeccable but my point was Cripps could not take Carlton to finals on his own, Judd was a freak and basically turned up and took us their. Cripps has been great this season and last but Judd was a better footballer than Cripps.

Judd is a better player and more of an AFL legend.

Cripps is a better Carltonian, leader and galvaniser of the team. Not as good as Judd the player, but still obviously a very good player.

In the end I think Cripps will be remember as more of a Carlton legend than Judd. If we're able to win a flag during his tenure as skipper he'll be alongside Sticks in Carlton folklore imo. Even if that doesn't happen, he'll be revered as a huge figure in our club.

However, if you had to choose one at their peak to put in your midfield for a game, you're picking Judd every time.

There's an argument to be made that they'd have been better with the other's side. Cripps feeding Murph and with Judd having adequate support inside from George and Kennedy probably wouldn't have gotten so battered.
Both great players but Judd was more dynamic.

I get where you're coming from but I didn't see Simpson as the guy to lead a side.
IMO Carrots always presented as the better leader.

Judd won a Brownlow as the best and most damaging outside midfielder in the game then came to Carlton and won another Brownlow as one of the best inside clearance mids in the game. I don't think he gets enough credit for that.

Statistically the figures look similar at either team, but watching the games I don't think anyone would say he played the same at Carlton as he did at WC. I think his tackle numbers are a telltale sign of this. He was clearly more inside at Carlton and was still one of the best in the game doing it. I'm not sure there's many guys running around now that are elite outside mids that could slide inside and still be one of the best in the game.

I probably like what Cripps is doing for Carlton only because he will most likely remain a blue for life.

As a footballer - easily Judd. No comparison really.

Judd could do it all - kick both sides, good marking hands, good agility, burst out of packs, high footy IQ.

Cripps is more of a bull - an in and under player that is smart how he uses his body/strength to advantage to win in scrimmages and is hard to tackle when running with ball in hand.

Cripps is also a good mark - strong hands but kicking is one of his weaker points. Absolutely no left foot

I think Judd is underated as a captain due to his introverted nature. Captained the Eagles to a flag in the midst of the Ben Cousins saga. Then moved to us and dragged us from last to finals in the space of 2 seasons. Lots of stories of the impact he had on standards at the club at the time.

There are different ways to lead. Cripps probably comes off the more natural leader, but Judd was a great captain in his own right.

Judd was better, to change his playing style as a result of groin issues and to suit the Carlton team at the time shows his amazing talent and quality.

However I do think Cripps has demonstrated a great capacity to use his strengths to develop into an absolute champion.

He is not as gifted athletically but has increased his tank, his spread and defensive mindset to be league leading in many aspects.

Crippa is now learning to play to the team’s strengths and not just his own, which makes him an excellent captain and has shown such grit, determination and hunger to better himself at every level of his game.

I was in awe of Judd and his ability to impact when needed most but I absolutely salute and admire Crippa’s thirst to improve and be the best he can be for the team.

He truly is an inspiration to the club and his teammates.

When he becomes a premiership captain he will in my eyes be an all time legend of the footy club.

I bloody love Cripps, but Judd was the best player I've ever had the privilege of watching. Nobody beats Judd for me.
I’m surprised to read this comment, Reg. I’m not sure your longevity with watching the game? I would well and truly have Sticks, SOS, and Diesel ahead of him.

I guess my problem with ranking Judd is that I never saw him as a Carlton man, was never impressed with what I saw of him (or his wife) in the media, felt he was a poor captain, and felt the Carlton version was vastly inferior to the West Coast version.

So yes… he was a champion player. But I think there is a fair bit more to a career.

Put it this way. If we could draft an 18 year old Cripps or an 18 year old Judd, I would choose Cripps every single time.
