News Cyril and Shannyn Rioli speak to Caro - link to club statement in page 8

It is a hard read but it is quality piece and good get by caro. Don’t shoot the messenger if we don’t like the story.

I have implied from this and other tidbits over the years…

  • assuming the Kennett remark is the main gripe is a gross simplification
  • it’s the response to that and other issues raised that is at the heart of the matter - dismissive and not truly trying to understand.
  • the point seems to be that we as a club said all the right things publicly but it was mostly lip service and we didn’t truly commit to cultural awareness and creating an inclusive environment for our indigenous players. We will not be alone in the afl in that regard (far from it) but I suspect when it was raised this was also dismissed or not acted upon.
  • the comments in the article re the 2013 issue and the meeting re the goodes booing are prime examples - not acknowledging or acting on an issue. That doesn’t show our indigenous players that we understand or even want to understand.

Like most clubs and most of society, we need to do better. It’s not enough for us whitefellas to point to nice marketing and $ spent in communities, our leaders and club as a whole must commit to ongoing education and leadership.

I suspect without a real and demonstrated commitment to learn, Cyril will stay estranged regardless of Jeff being there or not, and that’s a tragedy.

On the timing of the article: there’s a match every week, so I don’t think that’s relevant. From what I read, however, we’re at a crossroads in the exit plan for Jeff. To me, if there is an agenda, it’s an anti-Jeff one, not anti-Hawthorn. I have no issue with that.

(It also just may be that now is when Cyril decided to speak to a journo.)

Some of the other allegations are appalling but the jeans comment doesnt seem in anyway racist.

Offering money to an Aboriginal person to buy new clothes wouldn’t be considered a statement about their position in society?

You might not think so, but you need to walk in the shoes of an indigenous person to understand the many forms of casual racism and what comments like this speak to in their mind.

It’s patronising - and when you’re Indigenous and living your life around subtle and not at all subtle racism (like Chad’s recent story of being ignored at a luxury car dealership) I get how it would feel like another comment about who you are. Also, potentially other players’ wives/partners were wearing ripped jeans and Kennett only made the comment to Shannyn which again would feel fairly deliberate if you’re the recipient of the comment.

Important article. Very sad and very disappointing

A few dolts will run the “this is all part of Kennett’s master plan nobody else can understand” but if ever there was a person who should not be leading an organisation in 2022, it is Kennett.

I love the club but it’s governance under that person has been horrible and culturally corrosive. He needed to go a long time ago.

I hope the club can make amends with Cyril once Kennett is gone and the place can be a more inclusive and supportive environment moving forward.

Another example of cultural insensitivity
his wife took offence at Kennett ripped jeans stupid joke

I stand by comment get a Grip, it's a dumb joke from Kennett ....and I stand by comment Caro is a gutter journalist who hates Hawthorn

I don't see Burger Buddy Bateman have an issue .....Shaun was embraced by all players after the match re Port in the rooms last Saturday with him having a little grin whilst broadcasting

Don't loosely imply that I m a racist re "cultural insensitivity"

I have nothing but love for Cyril and Burger

If an individual senior player made "boong " comment name him and shame him....he does not represent Hawthorn value or its family which is embracing ....

Can someone ban this guy…

the jeans thing isn’t racist in and of itself but ignoring her emails and dismissing her complaints is poor and should have been handled better.

“late notice and boat in for a service” sounds pretty bitter towards clarkson which is a shame.

sad to see for someone who was easily my favourite player when he played.

unfortunately some people thrive on feuds and it seems that the club have at least tried to build a bridge.

Why should the onus be on the wife of a player to accept/forgive/put in context inappropriate comments of the president of the football club, instead of on the president not to make them?

Maybe he didn’t mean to be racist, and didn’t think he was. That is the whole point of cultural sensitivity training - to teach people who don’t get it to get it.

The failure to conduct such training puts all the onus on the victims to deal with the problem.

This going to bite the club very hard because Cyril is adored by all supporters. This will absolutely demand swift action or will be huge PR disaster for the club. They say no player is bigger than the club. But this is very different and could have a huge cultural impact on the club.
First action needed is for Jeff to stand down and then to commence the healing.

Certainly agree it was patronising but unless she was not
the only one in torn jeans and therefore was singled out, it sounds like a stupid dad joke not racism.

The other issues raised in the article are the serious problems

And was clearly needed at the club if a senior player was spouting that racist comment out in the open and going unpunished for it by the leadership group.

Ahh, but to an indigenous person it could well be.

“Why don’t you dress like us?”
“Don’t you have enough money to buy proper clothes?”

  • Jed Anderson left the club at 21
  • Lance Franklin left the club at 26
  • Shaun Burgoyne retired and immediately joined Port Adelaide
  • Junior retired early at 28 as the article states after a string of ordinary incidents

Jeff Kennett (a rich white privileged man) offered “jokingly” to give some money to a young Indigneous woman to buy thread to sew up her jeans. That’s the culture of the HFC in a nutshell. Players follow it, and aren’t called on it because the likes of Rioli don’t want to rock the boat (which is their right if they choose to do so, and as his partner sought to do at the appropriate times)

Frankly the boat needs to be rocked because our club is really no better than the Pies on this issue. Richmond and West Coast are brilliant, and we have a large gap to bridge.

We have so much to learn, and so do some posters on here. Until you’ve walked a mile in the shoes of an Indigenous woman, your understanding of the impact of that incident - as the “Straw that broke the camels back” on top of the others outlined in the very fair and objective article - will always be superficial.

I’m glad this has come out. It should have come out several years earlier. Hopefully it will be the catalyst for a fundamental change and improvement by the HFC in the area of indigenous culture, welfare and education.

I think we can all agree that the jeans joke isn't racist in a vacuum, but we can understand how it could be seen as racist as part of a pattern of behaviour. The straw being that it wasn't taken seriously.

Sad to have this confirmed, but hopefully it might be what is required to push Jeff out the door. That said I'm not sure that Cyril or Shannyn will want reconciliation even if we do.
