Sorry, Very stupid of me! But we definitely need indigenous presidents, coaches and captains in the AFL to help fix thisIan Silk not Burgoyne Silk
Did you see him in the rooms after the port win Saturday night ?To me it seems Burgoyne lives in Adelaide and works for a rival club now? Didn’t hang around for long once he retired. Wonder why?
Force the president out. A group had the necessary momentum to do it last year but blinked and instead we now have this stretched out process with no locked in exit. The culture cannot reform while he remains and even the compromise that was reached smacks of not taking it seriously enough. He’s not the only one who should go. The enablers and yes men need to go tooGenuine question for mods or those with connections to the club - what can we do to put extra pressure on the club to reform the culture and learn and grow? I am an interstate Gold member, would an email have any impact?
This article is a total hatchet job from Caro on our great club. While Jeff is the focus due to his profile, he was not president for Cyril’s entire tenure at Hawthorn and many of the incidents alluded to took place when Jeff was not president.
The article implicates great servants of the club such as Hodge, Lewis, Roughead, Dicker, Clarkson, Robson, Fox, Fagan, Wright, Evans, Newbold, Mitchell who were all in leadership positions at the club in Cyril’s time and are therefore, according to the article, complicit in the racism directed toward The Riolis or the unwillingness to make change.
Nowhere in the article does Wilson give any of these people an opportunity to give the club’s side of the story.
I’m no fan of Jeff, he needs to go, but this article is an attempt at derailing our club by Wilson, again.
I’m sure what the Riolis are saying has foundation, but to just blame Jeff is not fair and it’s also not fair to implicate so many greats of our club without giving them an opportunity to give their side too.

Nope that’s not what I’m “arguing “ at all
Merely pointing out that Chad chose to stay and has declared his love for the hawks
Burger loves the hawks Bateman loves the hawks buddy will turn up to all reunions and has fond memories at the hawks
These are all facts ….
If there where wrong doings against Cyril then address them and name the player who allegedly made the “boong “ comment
I love Cyril he is perhaps my second favourite all time hawk behind Dermott ..and burger is right up there too
If your take out from this story is to criticise Caroline Wilson, you need to take a good hard look at yourself. You also probably booed Adam Goodes but still claim it was because he was a sook or a flog.
There's a whole lot of stuff to unpack in that article. But the bolded is the most disappointing.Outsider here but I found this article really heartbreaking and have an enormous amount of respect for Cyril and Shannyn for putting this on the agenda knowing the attention it will receive.
The most devastating thing in the article IMO is the racist comment from an unnamed senior player and the way it was brushed aside by your leadership group. Buddy and Cyril were arguably your two biggest stars at that point and it’s almost unfathomable, not that the comment could happen because racism is still prevalent in our society, but what the outcome was.
This is not a ‘Hawthorn v Geelong’ thing and I’m sure similar incidents occur at all clubs. It’s just staggering to read how this directly led to the early retirement of one of your greats, who was a match winner on the field but always seemed like a quality person off the field as well.
On th b***g comment. It sounds like a non Victorian player, perhaps from WA, and only a few indigenous hawks players have wives
To me it is about understanding and education. Jeff made a joke and it was taken in a way that he didn't expect. As far as I am aware Jeff just brushed her concerns aside. Let's have a sliding door moment.help me understand.
he shouldn’t have made the joke because she was indigenous?
or he shouldn’t have made the joke because it was stupid for an old guy to comment on women’s clothing without it potentially blowing up in a way that he hadn’t intended?
isn’t that exactly what happpened? To me it is about understanding and education. Jeff made a joke and it was taken in a way that he didn't expect. As far as I am aware Jeff just brushed her concerns aside. Let's have a sliding door moment.
Jeff sits down with Shannyn, hears her side of the story, listens and comprehends how what he said made her feel. Outcome could have been Jeff coming out on the front foot saying that he made an insensitive remark that he thought wasn't said in a racist manner but after talking to Shannyn he now sees that we still have underlying casual racism in our society. He then expresses that he is going to learn from his mistake and do better and urge everyone in the community to do the same. That would be leadership.
No.isn’t that exactly what happpened?

Agree Yardie, The texts and letter from Jeff would have just been seen as a brush off wanting to make him feel better rather than a genuine attempt at understanding through sitting down or talkingTo me it is about understanding and education. No it isn’t …you know me better than myself do you ?It is what you’re arguing. You’re implying Cyril is wrong because Chad Wingard plays for the club and so did Burgoyne and Bateman.
in hindsight the club should have got an aboriginal mediator involved in the process.
as someone who has sat in countless mediations it’s very difficult to resolve disputes when the parties are very different and issues of perception involved without an independent professional mediator facilitating that discussion.
Seriously stop replying. No it isn’t …you know me better than myself do you ?
I’m not implying Cyril is wrong in how he feels or that there may be cause for such feelings
I’m stating that Caro is a gutter journalist and the article in tone is agenda driven
I’m stating that none of burger buddy Bateman Chad (who chose to stay ) have expressed the same feelings ..burgers smile in the hawk rooms sat night after port belting was heartwarming
I m not arguing …these are facts with the exception of Caro comment which is my opinion
