Cyril Rioli nominated for NAB Rising Star

Surely you are joking??

Palmer has almost played a lone hand in our midfield and starred, that counts for a bit more than a small forward in the best forward line in the comp.
Palmer plays in a weaker team, therefore stands out more.

What he does when he gets the footy pales completely in comparison as to what Rioli does when he gets ago at the footy.

wait wait wait... apparently last year the only reason Selwood won it was because he played for Geelong (i.e strong team) but you think the only reason Palmer has got noticed is coz he plays for a weaker team?

Meh, Palmer has been impressive, but not as good as Rioli. His footskills have really hurt him - I thought Ibbotson's game on Friday night was clearly better than Palmer's, whilst Rioli has not only managed to break into a brilliant side, but has added a different dimension to the forward line and more than earnt his place. Not meaning to be harsh on Palmer, as he's done very well, being expected to play a key role in Freo's midfield as a first year player, but he has averaged more errors per game than any other player in the competition (according to Prowess Stats).

While if the season ended today Rioli would run away with the award, he hasn't shown any real improvement. He started as a 20 possession, 2 goal, 2 assist, 6 tackle player, and that's what he's done each week. He's probably been the 2nd best player 5 weeks straight - though I haven't seen many games this last round, he was again his 'usual' self.

Like Birchall, he played game 1 like it was 101, and has kept it up. Hopefully (unlike Birchall) he receives some plaudits for playing like a veteran from day dot.

Isnt it intersesting the way we rate players. Rioli will be a star but people see him as being better due to his ball gathering and brilliant skill. Surely a 19 year old KPP who takes on 3 or 4 of the great forwards of the game is just as effective.

Joke.

Ibbotson was clearly the best youngster this round.

27 possies against Geelong.

Absolutely right.

This award is an absolute joke (if confirmed).

If it's for the best player of the round, Ibbotson takes the cake hands down.

Sure Rioli has played some great games, but he was NOT the best kid this round!

Rioli is potentially becoming the fastest legend in Hawthorn history.

Cale Morton deserves a nomination at some point - he has been the best midfielder at Melbourne. Poor guy, didn't he get the rough end of the draft.

I read somewhere (can't remember the source sorry) that the rising star for the week does not necessarily go to the best performed player for the round. I agree with some that Ibbotson (sp?) had a better game, however Rioli has been constantly good for the first 6 weeks earning his gong. Next week will probably be Nathan Browns turn, I wouldn't get too caught upo if a player misses out after a huge week. There's 22 weeks in the season. If they play well, they'll get their nomination.
