What was ur thoughts on the umpiring for the day? I have never ever been so confused while on the ground, me and my opponent at one stage couldnt do anything but laugh with some of the decisions...

Sounds like a similar standard of umpiring to that witnessed at Peninsula on Saturday.

What happened Frase?

Seniors grabbed another crucial win without playing their best footy. A Reds' victory over SMD at Lindsay Hassett would turn D1 into a 5 horse race.

Curtainraiser was a good tight contest all day, and Aquinas could play finals if they continue in the same vein. Both our losses have been against mature and disciplined opposition who have beaten us around the contests, and converted their chances far better.

Good kick up the bum frankly, provided we learn from it.

Harps its Williams (Aq) and Biggs (Fitz)... Being biased i think both should get off but u never know what could happen at the tribunal, not takin the automatic 2 weeks suggests they believe they can get off!!

Unlike Ant Williams to be involved in any broo-ha ha;)
Glad to see you back in the late game again Bloods, and still having a laugh! Top work.

Can anyone fill us in on what 2 Fitzroy players and 2 Aquinas players will be explaining to the tribunal tomorrow night?

Any suspensions likely?

Williams charged with striking Holderhead in the 2nd term. Biggs with engaging in unduly rough play on Cardamone in the 4th.

Hopefully sanity will prevail in both instances.

I was sitting on the hill behind our coaches and laughing at almost every call.
It was out & out the worst umpiring I have ever seen, the VAFA must get a copy of the tape (if there is one) and take action because if that's the standard then the VAFA will lose players to better umpired comps.
It seemed like they lost control a bit and thought they had t do something. They over umpired, paid too many 25's, soft frees yet missed a lot of free kicks that should have been paid. At times we were sitting there not knowing what the frees were paid for, and then bang! 25 meters for nothing.
Hopefully both teams have reported back to the VAFA that they were that bad and something is done.

Any one know how many 25's were paid on the day? I would say it was up near the 20's.

umm going by our stats there was 65 free kicks for the game and we gave away eleven 25s... dont know how many fitzroy gave away but i remember them clearly giving away 3 in a row which led to one of our back poickets having a shot for goal.. The only positive out of this is when players give away 25s they have to pay 5 bucks towards the footy trip, :D and 10 bucks for a report.. handy 65 bucks towards footy trip!!

I'll say the number would be closer to 30 then

Be fair to say this one has been the subject of open and frank discourse between the clubs and the VAFAUA.

Just like many VAFA clubs mid-winter, the VAFA Umps are struggling with injuries and absences too. Apparently last weekend 29 were unable to umpire, including about 15 of their first choice 50 umps. This means those from lower grades are stepping up a rung or two.

Sometimes it means umps who are out of form are forced into higher level games when they'd be better served staying at their level. This may have been one of those instances, and is unlikely to happen again.

All good games on paper this weekend. Its about time things started to crank up.

NOBS vs OG - NOBS will have to choke heavily to lose top spot, and apparently have some quality players to come back in. OGs must win or could be 2 games out of the 4 if OMs win.

Sth M vs Fitz - if Fitz wins on Saturday it will be safe for Sth Melb to book the footy trip for mid-late August, which would be a bit of a surprise considering Sth Melb seem to rate themselves - what happened out at Domeney Reserve last week??

OM vs BT - Understatement to say this is a big game. BT are almost certain to be playing NOBS in the 2nd Semi, however this match will say alot about whats gonna happen come finals time. OMs are a bit of a dark horse at the moment. That said, they've only really had the one good win all year.

Peninsula vs Aquinas & Prahan vs YV - home sides win and its good bye Aquinas and YV, away sides win and things will get very interesting.

Anyone know where the finals are played this year?

Anth Williams got 3 weeks.... Fitzroy player said that he didnt get hit, Williams said he didnt hit him.... Umpire hung him out to dry...
biggs got off... Aquinas player said nothing in it, Biggs said nothing in.. Umpire once again hung him out to dry, yet the tribunal let him off...

Beauty thing of Ammos i spose when you have blokes that are old enough to get the pension making decisions... For the sake of every1 in D1 i realy hope noone gets simmo as an umpire because he is a fu**kin disgrace...

And for what its worth im not bitter at all about biggs gettin off coz i was right there and agree that there was nothing in it.. just confused with how the tribunal can agree with umpire on one occasion and then totally disagree with another occasion???

Was there 45 minutes ago (on the way home from a delightful night's training). When Ant told me what happened and he got 3 weeks, I left figuring the same would apply to Biggsy.

Guess I was wrong.

Bloods22 - as an observer from a lower grade - what has happened to Aquinas this year

The last game I saw you play was the 2nd semi win over SMD last year

Yet now you are in a relegation battle whilst SMD minus alot of stars are atleast mid-table.

Did you lose alot of players this year???

Tibb, Box etc???

We have lost quite a few from last year but also gained a couple so thats no excuse really. A few injuries have hurt us to some key players, and i know this happens to a lot of club but we dont have the similar type of players to come into the side from the ressies. Apart from NOBS first game and SMD both times i think we have been fairly competitive against most sides. Unfortunately competitiveness doesnt give us the 4points.

It was one of those things. We have been the best side in the comp over the last 4 weeks so we were due to have a down week as EVERY side has at certain stages, unfortunately for us it was against the bottom side. Saying that Yarra would have to be one of the better 1-11 sides you will see. They have some very good players and i reckon they will pull of a few more suprises before the year is out. This w/e will define our season thatsd for sure. Lose and thats about it. I think the losses to Phraran, and Fitzroy will hurt us in the end

what do you base that on?

At the obvious risk of being labelled a supernerd, this is the D1 ladder for the last 4 matches

OMs 4 wins 143.16%
SMD 3 wins 162.69%
NOBs 3 wins 138.01%
B-T 3 wins 127.81%
Reds 3 wins 114.63%
OGGs 2 wins 89.58%
Yarra 1 win 74.24%
Prahran 1 win 63.61%
Peninsula 0 wins 76.66%
Aquinas 0 wins 63.59%

But for last weekend's loss to Yarra, SMD would've been the form team of the last month. As it stands, the Panthers are obviously stirring, and may well be timing their run to perfection.

Cheers

Well smart ass if you look a week back from there we actually gave OM's a touch up on there ground. So maybe i should of said last 5 weeks, but apart from the w/e which i was getting at SMD have been the form side of the comp.
But im sure you will have a reply to this and say OM's had players out ra ra ra. Remember they had so called "gun VFL" players in that day.

Odd response.

Wasn't being a smart ass at all - actually probably supporting your contention that, but for the loss against Yarra, SMD are flying. I'd rather be in the form you guys are than pretty much the rest of the teams.

BTW - I have no idea what players OMs did/did not have, as I'm the reserves coach for Fitzroy. Might want introduce yourself this weekend? Perhaps take a chill pill beforehand though, OK?

I would introduce myself to you before i played the 1's game but unfortunately i have to work so cant play. Would of ben good to re-introduce myself to reds #7 and #19 who i had so much fun with last time.
Wasnt an odd responce, unlike harper i will get straight on the front foot. I think we at SMD are in an uphill battle now for finals but if we make it i reckon we may pull a few suprises.
