Yes/no on Carlton being in a similar position.

Collingwood won a flag, that gives them a lot more flexibility to take a gamble.

If they mess it up, then spending a few more years in the wilderness to reset to where they can start a new push isn't a huge deal. Fans will still be happy with a 'recent' flag, and they'll have respect with players/clubs, etc.

Carlton however are coming into it's 30th year since a win, so at least another 4-5 years to get to where they can hope to enter their next window is a bitter pill to swallow, both to fans, and to the esteem the club is held in within the industry.

and yes, I know my club hasn't won one yet....it's why I know about the lack of respect that brings.
Let’s say your right about pressure at Carlton to win a flag, because you are:)

CFC are saying the same thing - per Voss comments from the B&F this week.

Even then, Carlton “appear” to be prioritising the draft rather than blowing it all on Houston.

If anything the investment in Houston should be more important to Carlton to finally win a premiership.

Ask yourself why is CFC appearing not to do so?

The Tasmanian nbl club haven’t exactly struggled getting quality players down from interstate have they. I think your massively underestimating what it means for a Tasmanian kid to be the first to play for a local club , they will have extra salary cap concessions and the afl are talking about making every Tasmanian Available as free agents as well he will be there no 1 target unless north improve massively over next couple seasons I think they will struggle to keep him
Way off base. Basketball players are not as pedantic and soft as AFL players. Basketball players have a lot more mental toughness then AFL players.

It comes from the concept of the NBA where you get traded regardless od your personal opinions on the move. This is the process the AFL needs

Yes agreed.

To some degree Carlton has the same question ahead.

Houston wants to come to Carlton. Carlton has the assets now, but hesitant to use them given the opportunity cost, bringing in elite talent in a strong draft before Tassie rips it up.

Collingwood have bigger issues than adding a nice kick off half back.
It's an enormous need. If we trade Noble, the difference between getting Houston and not is playing a skinny kid in that role when we're trying to win a flag. It also likely drags a player like Hoskin-Elliott out of our forward depth back into a wing/HB role.

The Pies were the #1 team in scoring from defensive 50 in 2023 to bottom half this year. Houston is not just a nice kick off half-back, he's a top 3 user from defence in the league, slices the field open with many risky (yet effective) kicks, and is defensively much more sound than what we've got in Noble.

You’re right.

Can just see Houston streaming off HB, running through the wing, lacing out ….

Schultz.

Not to mention, for a lot of NBL players, that's not their only club. They might be playing in Tasmania, then in Europe, then somewhere in the Americas, before they get back to the NBL again.

Just to confirm, the Pies going "all in" on Houston at the cost of their future

In: Perryman - 25 years old
In: Houston - 27 years old

Out: Noble - 27 years out
Out: Richards - 24 years old, not best 22
Out: F1 - realistic chance of the pick going toward McGuane anyway

The deal hinges on Gold Coast folding, surprise surprise

I dont mind John Noble, but im not sure John Noble + FRP = Dan Houston.

The Roos Pick #2 is the best deal out there.
And by a MILE.
Young Gun. SouthOz kid Sid Draper is a nice bit of compensation.
Dan gets plenty of cash as Norf have plenty to offload.
WIN. WIN.
If that was on the table port would have bitten their hand off for it already. It’s their future first that’s on offer.
