You’re reaching!

We finished 3rd last year. Like Collingwood derailed by injuries this year.

We have 1 player over 30 YOA, Collingwood have …9.

Including 6 likely to retire next year;

Sidebottom
Pendlebury
Howe
Mitchell
Crisp
Elliott

Who will replace these guys?

Re this years draft - please send me one reputable persons opinion that it is “commendable” depth & nothing special at the top end..

Houston is a great player - not sure given all of the above bringing in Schultz & Houston is a great move for your list.
You finished 3rd in the same sense that Port came 3rd this year - nowhere near it.

Weird list for retirees. What about Crisp playing over 230 games in a row among constant high B&F finishes suggests he’s on the cusp of retiring? Howe continues to play great footy at both ends. Plays on. Pendlebury and Elliott still have footy in them. Can play on.

Do you understand that several players retiring opens up space to lure players in via free agency? That is an option. Collingwood are a club targeting the top end every year they can. They are an attractive club to players.

Schultz and Houston are not 32. They are 26 and 27. Perryman is 25. They will be at the club in 5-6 years time. Probably longer. Why do you talk about them like they’re veterans?

Draft picks even in strong drafts are just draft picks. Xavier Clarke went top 10 in the great 01 draft. Billings went pick 3 in 2013. Chayce Jones went top 10 in 2018. You still have to get the picks right and develop them right. If you can cut out the middle man and get right to the established players who still have plenty of years of footy, you do that.

Of course Pie fans want to turn this into Carl Coll shitfight. Newsflash, there's an entire thread for that

You have no idea who they are.
Which is a pretty clear indication that it’s a far from inspiring group.

Now this is not to say that one or more of them won’t be terrific, but if the shoe was on the other foot, and someone who barracks for another club listed their young group and you’d hardly heard of any of them, would you not be saying the same sort of thing he’s saying?

Lauchie Cowan played nearly every game this year.
So did Elijah Hollands
Ollie Hollands has played nearly every game since he started
Ashton Moir is a gun! Watch his highlights
Jaxon Binns - ask your VFL a team about him.
Copper Lord - inside mid.
Jack Carrol played over 15 games this year.
Jessie Motlop is a gun small forward.

The other guys are developing nicely & more I haven’t listed.

Talk about hyperbole.

Ollie is a below average winger.

Moir was a bloke whose top age draft year was so bad he went from a lock top 5 pick to almost undrafted.

Binns can’t translate VFL form to AFL no different to someone like Finn Macrae.

Cooper Lord is an absolute potato.

Jack Carrol is close to a delisting or junk trade back to WA.

Jesse Motlop is a AliExpress version of Bobby Hill. (Yet you’re trading out your best small forward due to cap pressure)

Literally the only one I’d take on our list is Elijah Hollands who I actually rate as a mid forward.

Find me somebody of note who says otherwise?
Last year’s top end is better than this year’s. Reid and McKercher would both go #1 this year. O’Sullivan is probably this years top player and is not on the level of Reid, Rowell, Walsh, JHF, Daicos, Anderson etc who have come before in recent years.

This is not a super draft. It is a deep draft, good for if you have multiple picks in the sweet spot which to Carlton’s credit - they have. Clubs at the top end are looking to trade down to maximise value in a draft with good depth but a weaker top end. I think Carlton trading for pick 3 would be a silly decision.

Yes you need to get draft picks right - but if you don’t got ‘em - you can’t can you?

You’ve got 9 players over 30 - they can’t play on forever obviously.

How will you pay for incoming players - picks are gone & who will you trade out next year ?

Houston looks like he’s staying at Port now anyway - it might be a god-send!

It may be.

Check out Sid Draper - he’s what we might be reaching for at 3.

Kid’s a gun.

I think the deal could be described simply as:
Houston to GC for 13, Luko.
Then Houston for Noble, Collingwood 2025r1.

So port: Lose Houston, Gain 13 Luko.
Collingwood: Lose 25r1,Noble Gain Houston.
GC : Lose luko, Gain 13,Noble.

A simpler deal, other parts added if needed.

That's moron logic.

If club A in this case north Melbourne is offering x
And club B Collingwood is offering 50 % less

And both options will allow the Suns to get their academy picks and achieve future objectives etc, then they have a duty to their members to pick option A.

Or the people in charge there should sack themselves.

When you look at what Melbourne and Carlton paid for 9 and 14 it's clear.
Really shocked at how this simple concept is lost on so many.

Firstly, Gold Coast use their picks on academy players, which makes the draft operate on a different economy to other teams without academies. If they don't trade out high picks they get swallowed up on Academy players when other clubs nominate them. They either bring in an established player for a high pick, and use junk picks on an their academy, or use the high pick on the academy player. I really don't get why this is so hard.

Option A: In - A North Melbourne Future 1st (which turns into an Academy Player). Out - Pick 13 and probably pick 23.
Option B: In - A Collingwood Future 1st (which turns into an Academy Player), John Noble. Out - Pick 13.

Saying they are negligent in taking Option B is wild.

Pick 13, Pick 10, Pick 6 or Pick 1 in the draft makes little to no difference to Gold Coast, outside of being used to attact established players. Gold Coast either bets on their ability to attract a player worth a first rounder next year, or settle for established players this year.

You can cry about it, but they agree with me. Gold Coast would prefer Option B and gurantee an established player rather than gambling on their ability to be a destination club, and the proof in this potential trade or them trying to ship Pick 6 for Dan Rioli.

Let’s hope it’s not another Dow. Huge risk this year there’s no Reid’s in the top bracket

Port get 23 instead of 29 then 6 and 29 for Rioli

Still nowhere near enough for Houston don’t see how any variation of it gets near Houston’s value.

How about Collingwood go find assets for Houston instead of trying to get us to pay for him instead?

So much this but can you not help them gifting pick 13 for Noble for goodness sakes he’s not even that good at least Rioli is good

Draper would do nicely - seems unlikely WC will trade for 3 anyway unless their deals need oiling.

It’s a waste of time for WC and they’d want more than 12,14 anyway
