Dan26 : Your help reqd - longest spell between draws ...

I need your help, Dan, to judge this fact.

Fitzroy's last draw was in 1982 ... and they finished up after the 1996 season.

How's that on the scale of spells without a draw? It's about 14 and a half years ...

Just seems a pretty long time to me!

Essendon 1929-1944
Saints 1922-1943
Geelong 1935-1952 & 1969-1987
Hawthorn 1968-1985
North last one in 1988 though they did play extra time once!
Melbourne 1971-1992 (one draw since '71) & 1935-1952
Doggies 1957-1973
Swans 1922-1937
Richmond 1980-1995

Well, seeing as it's on the main board now, here's my reply on the Roys board:

It was a streak of 332 non-drawn matches, Fitzroy's longest. Of the traditional clubs, only Melbourne, Geelong and Hawthorn had less drawn matches in the 1970-1996 period (two apiece).

The record streak of non-drawn matches is 462 matches by Melbourne between R18 1971 and R7 1992. Fitzroy's streak is the sixth longest on record.

Not surprising the roos have few draws as they ar somewhat a 'hot and cold' club.

Even in '96, which could be described as their best year, they had some huge wins and some huge defeats

I remember listening to Geelong drawing with Essendon in 1987 at Windy Hill. It was something like Essendon 14.13.97 to Geelong 13.19.97 and I remember being reasonably happy with the result as Geelong weren't a very good team back then and Essendon had been the power club of the mid 80's.

Round 6 1987
May 2
at Windy Hill
ESSENDON 5. 2 8. 5 10. 7 14.12. 96
GEELONG 1. 5 7. 9 10.15 13.18. 96
GOALS: Ess- Barnes 4, Duckworth 2, Salmon, Baker, T.Daniher, Clark, Williams, Elshaug, Watson, Hawker.
Geel- Scott 3, Ablett 2, Brownless 2, Bruns 2, Lindner, Turner, Exell, Christensen.
BEST: Ess- Francis, Elshaug, Barnes, Hawker, Thompson, Williams.
Geel- Bruns, Bourke, Scott, Bews, Turner, Troy.
UMPIRES: Dore, Mitchell.
CROWD: 15,395

Prior to the match, Geelong was fourth and Essendon just out of the five in sixth spot. By the end of the season, though, Geelong finished two points and some percentage out of the five in sixth. Essendon ended up ninth. One of Sheedy's rare off years.

Various sources - I have a series of text files containing scores and results painstakingly typed out by Mr Ripper covering matches from 1987 to 1998. As for lists of records, etc, if you check out the details about FootyWorks on my website (see my sig) you'll find easily the best footy stats software around.

Of course there's always *Paul*'s excellent http://afl.has.it/ site as well.

It is weird considering we have played a sh1tload of close games, especially in the past three years.

Before that, yes, it was a 10 goal win or a bigger loss. Didn't happen often though.

When has Geelong ever been a good team? ;)

Looks like I joined this party a little late.

Sorry mobs... would have given you the info had I been online. For what it's worth, Essendon's 5 draws in the last 10 years is the most by any team in that period.

The most draws in any seaosn was 1921, when 5 were recorded
