Dawes didn't get to play yesterday but has to be the best short and long term answer to our 2nd power forward problem. Brown played a pretty good game tonight but is not really a CPF. I think he was in the side for tactical reasons i.e. Lake and Dawes will return against Melbourne.

As TD hasn't reacted to the barbs and posted a Dawes thread, I thought it my duty to put his name up early for selection.

You cannot, I repeat cannot - seriously consider replacing Leigh Brown with Chris Dawes based on today's game.

Brown was superb today, even when he didn't mark it, he was splitting packs and bring the ball to ground instead of just putting old 'frying pan' hands up skyward like Dawes has been.

I love Chris Dawes, but he needs to sort out his aerial game and also learn to use his bulk.

yes but starting to think Brown in as 2nd ruck for more mobility and grunt instead of a lame fraser.

Dawes can pinch hit in the ruck as well if he isnt finding it up forward also and swap with brown for parts of the game - might give us more options.

I wouldn't mind Leeroy as a second ruck. I'm and advocate of mobile rucks that can do things during the game so it wouldn't be the worst idea to try it out against Melbourne, especially seeing as they have Jamar who Leeroy will be forced to compete with on occassion giving us an indication of how he'd handle it.

Neither Dawes, nor Brown can spend enough time in the ruck to justify it. Fraser was good at the centre bounce today, in fact 2 of his clean taps straight to Swan/Pendles, resulted in centre breaks and goals.

Make no mistake, L.Brown is a seasoned AFL player and will certainly be a part of our 22 if/when we make the finals. He is a battering ram and as such is being 'managed' through the year.

The same applies to older players such as Tarks and Fraser. We all know Fraser can't play 22 games plus finals. At the business end of the season all these types will be in and wait for it...... maybe even Obree.

I see no point in playing a second ruckman if they dont contribute to the team. ATM Fraser out and Dawes in. Brown/Dawes can pinch hit in the ruck when required. Leigh Brown can also be moved forawrd or back if needed - would have been handy down back against the Lions last week.

You watch today's game?

Clearly a joke, we all like dawes but you cannot drop leroy after tonight

spot on !!! Davis loved it tonight when Leroy brought the ball down at his feet, like it or lump it Leroy has played great in the magoos got his chance today and deserves to play until his form or matchups say otherwise

:thumbsu: Totally agree with this post!

Hahahaha! You're Dave's sub-editor. The man's taking over the board through thread posting supremacy, numerical, not necessarily qualitative .:D:D ps. Daves gonna be pissed you forgot the "ROAST" prefix.
Seriously though, the constant assumptions that players are being "dropped" without consideration for MM's stated and well articulated policy of rotation and horses for courses is behind at least half the angst.
Brown had "superb" form in the VFL leading to his selection and runs on the board, doing a fine job last time we met the Dogs.

You should re-watch that game (Rnd 1) and look at how he helped set the win up in the first quarter. Also listen to the commentators awestruck at his presence and not sure where he got these "new found skills".

Dawes is young and needs to be rested for a long campaign, just as the older brigade are old and need to be rested from time to time. Over the year you'll see it happen to almost every player. Blokes like Thomas, Heater and Harry will get as much game time as possible to build their tanks and get a rest late in the year. Sidey and Beams will get a wek or tow off, when it suits matchup wise.

It's all designed to get the wins we need and still have the grunt left come September to have a realistic shot.

The reason I started the thread was due to 774's after game analysis when it was stated that the Pies cannot win a premiership without a dependable, strong specialist key forward. Leigh Brown was not viewed as having played such a role tonight (by the commentator). The panel were not as wrapped with his game as you folk are.

I am not seriously suggesting Dawes for Brown next week. I know that Brown was BOG in the VFL the last 2 weeks, and he seemed to have straightened out his kicking. Dawes as 2nd ruck against a weak ruck set up is an option, but really we could adopt a horses for courses approach, picking the player most suited to the opposition.

I also agree that Dawes needs to sort out his overhead marking problems. In a way, we have three CHFs with none of them dominant or even dependable over the course of a season.

And yes I did watch the game - at Zagami's in Boronia. Why do so many pubs set the aspect ratio incorrectly so the players appear larger than they are?

Leroy provided a real physical presence out there today - a few Dogs players were wary when he was around.

Also got the ball to ground for Leon to crumb.

That second key forward spot is all about structure. You can have two out of Dawes, Brown, Anthony and Fraser.

I'm leaning towards Brown & Fraser at this point, purely because of the physicality Brown provides that Dawes can't.

Which means I'd probably have to change my preference to Brown & Dawes.

You answered your own question. If Collingwood can't win a premiership without a dependable, strong specialist forward, how is Dawes and his overhead marking issues going to fix that?

The biggest problem I have with Leigh Brown apart from his kicking is that he goes after the man too much instead of grabbing the footy. There were at least 4-5 times during tonight's game where he'd either leave the ball for someone else and go for the big bump or even worse, he'd go for a big bump instead of a firm shepherd when one of his team mates already has the footy. This is especially frustrating because he's in danger of giving away a free kick when we're already driving the ball forward.

You can play tough footy and be a physical presence as long as you're smart about it and don't lose focus e.g. Hodge, Jonathan Brown, Beau Waters, Chapman.

Leigh Brown does not play focused.
