He's certainly a defense-first coach but despite our low scoring this year I feel with the exception of a few games we played when we were in a rut mid-year our game style is actually pretty good to watch. We look to move it fast, we have started taking on the corridor a bit more. Ball in hand we definitely attack.

It's more that we do get numbers back a lot and defend really hard so that means we won't kick huge scores, especially not while we have a pretty average midfield.

I remember hating watching us play last time Ross was coach but this time I actually enjoy the style more. Its similar in how we defend but different in how we move the ball.

Not all clubs can have never ending father sons to make list management a breeze :(
Saints have been in the comp since inception.

They were done dirty by country zoning of Mornington Peninsula but not anyone else's fault they can't sire a decent player.

Ross isn't so much defence first as effort first. IMO he can't be coaching enough on skills. He just wants the players to get where they need to be in attack and defence but doesn't place enough value in executing a hard shot at goal.

Nah we have been shit because we have had bad administration, and a poor high-performance culture for the best part of 150 years.

Can't blame the lack of access to players, after all, we've actually had some of the game's best.

Now we seem to have the offfield stuff sorted I'm more confident we can slowly start making in-roads on the field.

You are only focusing on the successful father/sons (now father/daughters in WAFL).
You are also forgetting some of the unlucky stories along the way. Losing generational talent like Menzel, N.Ablett, Egan, so it evens things up.

He seems to be able to get the best out of some players, but Saints are no closer to a flag really this year than last year. They are making up the numbers.

A bit harsh I think. We have found some really good young players over the last 12 months

Last year we didn't know Mitch Owens was going to be so promising likewise NAS, Pou, and Hammer who we found from nowhere really.

Windhager has continued his development and Wilkie, Marshall and Sinclair have gone to another level with all three being genuine AA considerations.

Next year we should have King for a whole season.

Steel has gone backward but on the whole, with the age of our group being fairly young, no one is likely to get worse.

Plus now we are well coached.

A flag is still quite a way away but I think we have the people in place to build this team going forward into something much better than it currently is.

Look, I'll put my hand up and say I don't know Saints' young players as well as others (except Phillippou who was on the radar of some West Coast fans last year). But I don't hear as much about them as some of the other young guns making a name for themselves. It feels like Saints are kinda in no-man's land this year. I would have GWS as favourites going into the finals. But it doesn't take much for impressions to change if some of those kids come really good.

Fair enough, I also admit I don't know a lot about WCE young players or though I really wanted us to draft Elijah Hewett

Owens, you would know about because he's 3rd favorite for the rising start but there are a few other talented kids as well.

Keep an eye on Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera.

Only his second year and he's putting out some absolutely elite numbers.

Was rated the best kick in his draft class, a very penetrating and accurate kick, pacey and quite evasive too.

We absolutely do need to find a way to get some elite on-ball talent into the club but forward and backs we are pretty strong for the future.

NWM looks like he will be a star sadly for STK fans, rumours are growing he wants back to Adelaide.

Ross Lyon would have to be the most overrated coach of all time given his reputation far exceeds his achievements.
The guy is second of the current coaches for all-time games coached but has never won a flag. He, Rodney Eade and John Northey are 3 of 18 coaches to have coached 300+ games and not won a flag. So, yes, he is severely overrated, especially when you consider the excruciatingly dour game of footy he brings to the table. Saints notch up a win. It's 51-48. That's Lyon footy for you.

How Saints fans accept and tolerate the guy coming back and bringing more this crap I'll never know.

He may not have won a flag as coach but he has made several grand finals and is often spoken about as being a great tactician. I think they have enough talent to bounce back from this

I think that game was more about GC chipping it about and refusing to take a risk than Saints game plan.
GC couldnt deal with the gameplan. Most other teams would have won by 2 goals.

I would suggest a great tactician keeps ahead of the times, responds to how the game changes and innovates accordingly. That's how a lot of the long-term coaches stayed in the caper and continued to be relevant and successful through different eras. Or a great tactician looks at the tools he has and thinks of the best ways to use them to best effective according to how the game is currently played.

But Lyon basically just brings the same thing to every team every time. He asks the guys, regardless of who they are, to do the same stuff. He's good at implementing his system and encouraging buy-in to it, but his system fails. It has never been premier-ship worthy, and in 2024 it's barely league-worthy.
