Without A Fight in barrier 1 for today's Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m WFA). Historically, Melbourne Cup winners, whilst not many of them have run in the race, have run well.....all finishing in the top 5 each time they ran in the Hong Kong Vase. Without A Fight is one of the favourites or the favourite.

Without a Fight...beautiful run in transit. Found absolutely nothing in the straight. Finished second-last?

Either something has gone amiss or simply outclassed.

It annoys me that we never seem to take our best middle distance horses overseas when they are in their prime.
they dont go because they are totally outclassed. Theres a reason most of our good horses at a distance are Euro bred group 2 to 3ers. Australian breeding industry has totally destroyed the quality of our middle distance plus horses, and they are doing the same to our sprinters too right now.

How often do our best middle distance horses go overseas in their prime?

We wait until they are at the end, or weren't that good to begin with, and then go overseas.

The ones that don't wait until they are cooked like Sunline, Elvestroem, Starcraft, So You think etc. are outstanding.

Not a good day for 🇦🇺 trained horses at Sha Tin

Without A Fight: 12th - Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m WFA)

Recomendation: 12th - Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m WFA)

Antino: 11th - Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m WFA)

A. If you want I've got data from 1990 onwards for Australian trained horsed and their records outside Australia.

B. So You Think - proper world class horse.

Let's be honest with ourselves...hand on heart....Australian racing isn't strong at 1600m+ in terms of quality in numbers/depth.

The sprinting...thats what Australian racing is good at but currently and the past 3 to 5 years...it hasn't been a strong period depthwise.

Yet biased one eyed Aussie racing fans jump up and down about how good prize money is. That old chest nut....the old prize money line keeps getting churned out. It's a one dimensional mindset.

Name me the middle distance Australian horses that were stars and went overseas in their prime and failed in the last 30 years.

The only one I can think of is Makybe Diva in Japan.

They either don't go overseas or we wait until they are finished like VE.

Or good ones go like So You Think, or Starcraft, or Elvestrom or Sunline, and they are actually shown to be world class.

We piss and moan about the quality of our racing when the problem isn't the quality of our racing. It's that the prizemoney is so good that no one wants to risk taking a horse overseas.

VE was a good horse but not that good. She ran one high rating race...her Melbourne Cup win. Prior to that she never rated high or after the Cup win. In a stronger era of Australian racing at 1600m+ she doesn't win as many G1s as she did.

There are high prize money races outside Australia. The Arc, the Vase, Japan Cup. Australian trained horses don't go cos they aren't good enough.

Makybe Diva was more of a stayer than a middle distance horse despite her Cox Plate win.

People talk about So You Think, Sunline, Starcraft and Elvstroem....that was from a bygone era. The fact is that 1600m+ racing in Australia is garbage.

Who have been our good horses in the last 10 years? Winx was treated with kid gloves which was very disappointing as she might have been the only one who could have gone overseas and won but they were too scared to test her so she stuck to the races which were almost guaranteed wins. Anemoe was the only other Cox Plate winner that was Aussie and he got destroyed by Dubai Honour when he finally met a decent horse.
Before that Pinker Pinker was basically a group 2 horse who fluked the Cox because of the ride and Shamus Award who was a maiden in very poor years....

That's why I admire So You Think so much.

1. The ONLY horse to win five G1s in EACH hemisphere.

2. Was stretched out to 2400m (4th in an Arc) and further out to 3200m when 3rd in the Melbourne Cup.

3. Ran in six countries: Australia, Ireland, England, France, Dubai and USA.

4. Ran on turf, dirt and tapeta.

5. So You Think ran in the toughest and beat racing jurisdiction in the world for 1600m+ racing...that is in Europe. Look at the horses he beat in Europe AND let's not forget that the freak Frankel was in Europe at that time too.

No horse in world racing in the past 20 to 30 years has been tested as much as So You Think was. Imagine if he stayed in Australia....he would of won 3 Cox Plates and possibly a fourth Cox Plate if he wasn't retired to stud. He beat better horses in Europe than what Winx was beating in Australia. Winx was a champion and her record says that, Winx is an all time great of Australian racing but unfortunately for her she ran in a weak era of 1600m+ racing in Australia...the depth then and currently isn't there. Winx not travelling....thats a blight on her career and also a blight on Waller and the owners. A horse that good and stays in the comforts of Australia....same old same old...no new challenges....same old opposition for the most part....disappointing.

But back to So You Think.....he did more for Australian racing on the world racing stage than any horse in the past 40 odd years I think.

I think Brightside would have been competitive in the Mile.

Fangirl seems to have gone off a bit since her injury, but I think last year she would have been competitive.

I think Anamoe would have been a great chance in the mile or cup if they had travelled after his cox plate win.

VE would have been competitive if she had travelled as a 5yo.

But if I owned any of them, I probably wouldn't want to travel them either given how much money is available here.

It would be good if you could edit that into something coherent.

Brightside could have finished top 5 but Antino is probably a length worse than him and he was not great yesterday, The check happened because he wasnt good enough to take gaps. Fangirl beats up on the Sydney walkers but is a length off the best when she meets MrB and company.
VE was racing just as well, and maybe better than when she went over. but she was beating the euro group 2 and 3 quality horses who magically turn into group 1 horses when they come here, Her runs over there were about how good she really is. She just wasnt competitive.
Anemoe met Dubai Honour who is a good horse and got destroyed. Anemoe would have met better horses than DH over there.
Winx would probably be competitive, So You Think was a superstar as mentioned by Lunchtime but he still gor beaten a lot over there.
I reckon up until the 2000s when Northerly went around we had close to the best horses in the world, and now its complete garbage.

Exactly....Verry Elleegant....good horse but that's it. Don't be fooled by the massive prize money she won nor the whole heap of G1s she won. In a stronger era of Australian racing (1990s - 2000sish) she gets her head kicked in.

Australian racing at 1600m+ has been garbage for ten to twelve years in terms of depth. It's seriously bad.

So You Think's record outside Australia was 11 starts for 6 wins and 2 placings.
