The goal had been kicked ( through the goals ), then the push came.

Why pay a free if the goal was already scored.

Yeah that's what I mean... the way the ump was justifying it by saying a free had been paid implied it was advantage because the goal had been kicked.

But like you say the push was after the goal so the free kick is meaningless and basically grants a free cheap shot after every goal if that's how they're going to adjudicate it.

Don’t think the criticism of Walker is very fair , couple of brain farts as usual but kept the very dangerous Kossie Picket under lock and key all game

Sharp vs Action Ed battle was good to watch from the top level boy they covered some ground at a crazy clip

Did Pickett play ?.

Total non appearance.

We should have had a free kick from the centre square. Having just kicked a goal doesn't mean the defender can infringe with impunity.

If we wore navy blue we'd have had an extra shot from the goal square (yes I know that umpire got dropped for that call but still).

Fyfe = General.

Some here are in “Karen” mode, and love to be negative nannies about Fyfe. He directed a lot of plays, telling team mates where to go.

Played a very solid game, distributing the ball to team mates advantage. Not 1 metre handballs, but longer ones, opening up play.

Kudos to Melbourne, they were always going to be monstered in any ruck contest, they did their best to stay competitive.

Young/Serong/Brayshaw being fed by Darcy and Jackson. Game is won/lost in the midfield and that combo's best work is a thing of beauty.
Shhhh, Kane Cornes is listening. He's like that sneaky teacher waiting to catch you out smoking behind the bike sheds and slap you with a detention warrant fat as a speeding fine!!

Meh, who cares now, we're a bit too old for your school-boy intimidations Cornesy.....how you like them (teacher's pet) apples..?!?!?!

On a slightly more serious note - hope Darcy can stay fit from here on in with Jacko, it really does make the difference.......

Can’t believe how bad Goodwin coached that. Let Oliver go head to head with Young who put on a clinic in the first half.
Also no one seemed to realize Clark was cutting them to pieces. Teams that have beaten us this year have put work into both of them.

Very entertaining but not a high pressure game other than the 20 minutes or so Melbourne seeemed to remember they were supposed to be playing a game of football.

Most enjoyable afternoon. Sterner tests await but we is good.

What happened to Freddy's goal kicking today? He is usually pretty dependable.
My phone died at the end of the second. Freddy had an almost game today - did good things, but his kicking was just completely off. Kicked points that would normally go through, not sure if he just couldn’t hit them right.

Aside from the last kick inside 50, our ball movement when we got out was so amazing to watch. Decision making was still patchy and also we were caught out in our D50 a few times leaving targets open, but we still completely blanketed them. AP out hurt, but really we should have already been at least 3 more goals up than we were at the half. The scoreboard flattered Melbourne in the end.

My credit card is also going to hurt with the 17 goals - but at end of it, I was hoping for 20. :)

Also, was so pissed at the extra grabs AP was getting at the contest all game until he went off,

Forward line was singing
Darcy a beast
Midfield handball game like a hot knife through butter
Fast ball movement and getting out the back
Can we clone Treacy?

Injuries to AP and Jackson 😔
Freddy, Sharp, Banners, Chappy, Walker 🤷‍♂️
Could have won by a lot more , cooked a lot of the I50 entries after some great ball movement
Second half of Q3 and Q4 not great
"Can we clone Treacy?
We already have. He goes by the name of Patrick Voss.

Melbourne became our "recent bunnies" in that infamous 2022 defeat...scared to flaky truffles ever since; it's hardly our fault we're chiselled intimating Vader-esque opposition!!! Agree though regards to pressure, but I thought we also controlled our flow so early on, it's only when we resorted to a few silly brain-farts that lead to direct turnover goals that they bridged something of a gap....but it never lasted long. Nathan Jones was right, they're humming and the fact they talked us up as a Premiership threat is very encouraging, even if it doesn't bear fruit this year. See the Optimism thread for where this trajectory be fizzing......!!

Thought this could be a danger game - Dees keen to make amends, and our boys complacent after last time out.

Not bog, but I liked Fyfe’s game just winning ground ball and dishing it out to someone in a better spot.

Treacy, well I was hopeful he’d improve his marking this year, but it’s now it’s beyond where I thought he could get to.

Just a note on Sonny Walters maturity.

The Freo players ran through the banner with 2 kids, after running through the banner, the plays zoomed off to do their warm ups. As they moved off Sonny went over to the youngster and checked to see if they were ok, then ran with them towards the players near the goal square.

You aren’t given respect, you earn it. Sonny has my respect, as he did something that showed in the heat of match day warm ups, he could take the time to help a young supporter.

Thought if AP didnt go off we would have hit close to a hundred point win today. The Dees just could not get through with that structure. Who was it who said MW would bob up and kick 5 and shut us all up for a month. A great game from him today. Still think his best role in this team is sub tbh but cant deny a 4 goal efffort.

He absolutely cleared Oliver out of the way at a D50 stoppage to let Serong zip in for an easy clearance.

Definitely playing his role.

Couldn't agree more.
It isn't always obvious other weeks but today his influence around stoppages was clear and sublime - his handballs to advantage out of contested situations are fantastic.
I kinda think O'Meara had a similar game - his capacity was very visible, other weeks it is there but not so obvious.
All up we are a very balanced team:
Backs-mids-forwards
Smalls-Talls
Aerial-Ground
Speed-strength
Congested-spread
Intensity-sustained
Youth-experience. Yes I know we're weighted toward youth BUT not so much in defence/mid and our forwards are playing beyond their years. Taking down May and Lever is proof of that.

JLo seems to be getting it together for the business end. That is a special ability.

You're taking the **** if you don't think Walker played well. Kossie was getting "top 10 player in the league" puff pieces in the week and I genuinely forgot he was playing for most of the game.

Fyfe's handballing was mint today.

there are two sides of the game.

Walker was superb at one of them…

With the ball, he was not good

Would it not have been from the goal square? ‘whichever is the greater penalty’. That was the argument from the Jordan Clark dissent free.

He's the best all round BP we've had since Roger.

People who criticise him must have forgotten that post Roger era where small forwards would destroy us every game.
