There was a throwaway line at the bottom of an article last week that the club was going to wait until after the trade period before making a decision on Carter.

Only one rookie list spot at the moment unless Powell gets cut.

Do we not get an additional two spots because we no longer have any nominated veterans? I thought we could have 6 Cat A rookies (Maginnes, Powell, Newman + 3) and up to 3 Cat B rookies (Adamson, Brophy + 1)

Don't get the hate. He isn't A-grade but he would get a spot in our best 22 and is solid enough, offers some X-factor.

However Varcoe isn't the key in that trade.. even if you say Varcoe is worth nothing we're effectively upgrading 32 to 13 to have 11 and 13 in the draft and only lose Schofield.. that's a huge win imo.

He'd scrape into our 22 at best. I know Geelong persist on playing him, but he'd hardly be a lock. Why would he play better footy for us then them? They're a much more successful club then we are at the moment, and it's not like Perth is his home town or anything.

He might not be the best but he sure as shit aint as bad as Wellingham.

True. But i believe Wellingham at the moment is just broken, and the right club needs to find a way to fix him, if that makes sense. WCE probably only have next season to do it before i think his time will be up here.

Varcoe on the other hand has been carried by an elite club, surrounded by elite players and STILL just goes through the motions. I don't see him being hungry enough to survive at AFL level much longer. Even less if he went to a club like ours, which wins considerably less games then Geelong and realistically won't be in premiership contention next year.

Motlop plays like Varcoe should.

There is absolutely no doubt the experts know more than us…. but clubs continue to get it wrong which infuriates supporters that care about clubs. Hence the thread.

Nah that changed. It's just 40 senior players plus 4 rookies (and up to 3 Cat B rookies) now.

Though just to confuse you, teams can elect to go in with 38 or 39 senior players and make up the difference with rookies.

Saw on TV tonight that we have had talks with Shane Yarran from Subiaco.

Interesting. Is it a sign we are now not steering away from the bad boys?

He's 25 now. Seems genuinely interested in improving his life. He's not an 18 year old Dayle Garlett.

At 25 you are a lot more mature than someone just becoming an adult for the first time.

He looks a talent and I say go for it.

He's 179cm, 80kg's.. where would we play him?

He doesn't break lines, he's not a small crumbing forward, and his pace is overrated because he doesn't use it. We aren't really addressing any sort of issues with his acquisition so it would just be a nothing trade.

What I don't like about the free agency compensation is that the compensation is so subjective. I believe that if a club like ours or Adelaide lost James Frawley then we wouldn't have received a first round pick as compensation, and because there is no transparency to the process there is no way of ever defending or advocating that claim.

I think the crux of my point is That everyone wants a fair competition, and systems like this just bring that fairness into question.
