all the other big clubs (and their Presidents, players, recruiters) sound out top players and ask what would it take to get them to come to our club.
And I guess this now goes full circle back to the discussion earlier about how some clubs find it easier to do this than others, clubs from some cities find it easier to do this than others.

Fremantle have been very open in throwing money at players they desperately need - not just want - and have failed every time. If I were McPharlin and was now considering playing for one more season because my side failed to attract Frawley I'd feel pretty weird.

Brisbane have been lucky that two players have inexplicably expressed a desire to move to Queensland, but otherwise they would struggle a lot to do this (granted they're not a 'big club').

Port Adelaide likewise were lucky to have the Ebert connection (cannot count Polec because that argument is cancelled out by us trading in Elliot Yeo), and they look set to be successful with Paddy Ryder, but again that's an unusual situation. Their success is more attributable to excellent drafting and a gun coach though.

Adelaide may be trying just as hard as Fremantle and West Coast and haven't been overly successful. Eddie Betts was a free agent rather than a trade, and they are paying him $800k more than we apparently offered Travis Varcoe.

I think players are much more likely to agree to a trade to either return to, or remain in, their home state OR failing that they will pick a side that is likely to play finals. Given there are so many more players from Victoria, this means the Victorian teams are advantaged somewhat, and the already strong Victorian teams even more so.

I just don't get how clubs would want to keep a player against their will. I know they signed a contract, blah blah, but in the end if the player wants out, and you don't let them, what's the best case scenario?? Beams could just f**k around for a year, play in the VFL and then bail once his contract is up, Pies get bugger all. Same with Griffen and the Dogs. If you can sack a coach with years remaining on a contract, then they obviously aren't as sacred as clubs try and make out.

Its a tough one, with Beams being a star of the comp, if you don't get an offer where you think wow wee then you are probably going to back your club in to change the guys mind over the next year to sign on again.

With Brisbane's offer of draft picks, Collingwood obviously think they are still somewhat of a contender and losing Beams seriously hampers that so they wanted a ready made very good player to come in to help keep next year's performance up.

Its almost a year too late for Brissy with everyone wanting to leave last year they could have thrown one of them up. I would offer up leuenberger if it would help to get Beams

You may be right Boss. If this off-season is an example of the way things are going, players don't seem to need too much encouragement. The advent of Free Trade is encouraging even contracted players to look for opportunities to move to where they want to be.
Hopefully next year some of those guys will want to come to WC

Players move to be closer to home, to be closer to bigger bank balance or be closer to a flag. Its the last factor that WC need to prove.

Yep. BTW, while I deleted my post I don't mind that you quoted me - I deleted it because someone else already debunked it and I realized that I hate reposting things like that.
All good - I deleted my post too. Should we now delete these posts too?

I guess it makes it hard for Brisbane too. I mean they didn't chase him (that we know of) Beams just chose them and now they have to do all the hard work to make it happen, and inturn, look like jerks if they don't trade "fairly" to get him. I reckon what Brisbane are offering is pretty fair, but I can also see your point about the pies wanting a ready made player to replace him. Tough for both parties I guess.

We are lucky in the sense that so far, none of our players have asked to leave, even if we come out of this trade period with only our draft picks and the cat b rookies, we have done well to not lose any of our players, especially when we lack depth across the board.

Yes - but after all the shit had gone down - so got blindsided by this one (as did most clubs)
Going to be taking a pay cut as well if he gets to GWS.

We have been historically pretty lucky in general with this, except for the big one in Judd.

Perhaps this is an advantage to 'playing nice' with other teams? We don't encourage opposition players to break contracts, and other teams leave us alone?

Obviously St Kilda did it with Brown but he wasn't getting much of an opportunity, and Port did it with Ebert, but he was hardly a household name. The others that we've had poached in the past 10 years or so were all fringe players IIRC

How long until someone at Brisbane asks for him to take that tweet down?
Yeah noticing Twitter is getting used for some pretty narky comments from footy players/coaches these days. Enjoyed Max Gawn's dig at O'Rourke though.

Totally, its 'tough' on Brisbane as the opportunity to get someone of his quality doesn't come around too often, but then you dont want to upset ur current players by shopping them around and asking if anyone wants to go to melbourne.

Ah the joys of managing a list

Less stuffing around by Coll/Bris could have seen the pies ON TRADE the picks received for Beams to another club for their desired "ready made player"
It's not fuc£!n hard.

Everytime I see him I think of Keith Richards

I think the whole Beams to Brizz shows how difficult it is to get good players out of a club

SEN reporting GWS are going to make a play for Beams...could this help push out Coniglio?
Well if they're going to go for Griffen and Beams then they're going to have to find some currency

Collingwood say they want a top pick and a good player. The deal on the table would give them pick 5 and Greenwood, why wouldn't they grab that?

Yeh that sounds pretty fair actually

Tip Scully upside down and shake his pockets. Only fair he re writes his contract to 100k per year
