at least as many games that Guthrie is gifted.
If indeed any player has been gifted games then I'm against it, doesn't matter who they are.

And I don't think giving one player too many chances should be reason to let someone else waste our time. At least Cam has shown some good form more recently than 2015.

Did I just read that Menzel has taken on Alex Johnson's number at the Swans? I can't think of a worse omen in the history of number choices in any sport.
Yep - "Menzel will burst through the banner in the No. 2 jumper worn by 2012 premiership defenders Alex Johnson and Rhyce Shaw, while Thurlow is set to continue a rich history himself, with the new Swan being gifted the No. 6 guernsey worn by Swans Hall of Fame inductees Harry Clarke, Andrew Dunkley and Craig Bolton."

Johnson actually wore #34 in the 2012 premiership, and he changed to the #2 some stage since then and this year was the only time he wore the #2 during an AFL match

You're a wealth of information.

Rumour is that Menzel's groin gave way at Swans training and he is set for more surgery.

Not on the Swans board?

Maybe the Swans were trying to keep the surgery quiet - just read the following on the Herald Sun:

New Sydney recruit Daniel Menzelhas been forced to undergo groin surgery only weeks into his stint as a Swan.

The Swans confirmed to the Herald Sunthat Menzel had last week undergone surgeryafter pulling up sore in early training sessions.

Menzel began feeling groin painfrom his first session with the Swans, who believed early surgery was preferable to the injury lingering all summer.

It is understood the surgery is similar to the groin release surgery that Sydney star Lance Franklin underwentafter returning to pre-season training still sore from a September injury.

The Swans are not ruling out a Round 1 Sydney debut for Menzel but he will only return to training some time in February...

...The hope was he could put in a massive pre-season and set himself up to play deep while Franklin eased back into football after his groin issues.

But if he does make Round 1 it will be with a severely limited pre-season...

...Franklin injured his groin in Round 22 and played sore through the finals, kicking 0.1 in the elimination finals loss to GWS.

But a period of rest did not ease his symptoms so the Swans operated in mid-November.

It will be interesting to see what impact the groin surgery & delayed starts to pre-season for the 2 key forwards options will have the Swans as a team - do they have other options up forward if Franklin & Menzel are underdone to start the season?

they'll probably uncover some gun academy kid,

or Thurlow will become their primary forward target
:p

Wondering if that's what the injury was during this last season. Groin- hip... very closely related.
Yet another interrupted preseason.
Feel really bad for Dan.

He really is a case of the old saying that if he didn't have any bad luck, he wouldn't have any luck at all.

Anyone else curious how Menzel's medical/fitness test at the Swans really went?

Was the test not thorough or was Menzel playing coy during the test because surely it has to raise eyebrows how a player with a known history of groin injuries passes a medical only to report feeling pain & soreness after his first training session with the new team?

No doubt that when he was fit and on top of things that he was great to watch and such a valuable player - but with this setback right at the start of pre-season it's hard to fault the clubs decision to not re-sign him.

Hate to be melodramatic but that's curtains for Menzel, I think. His history shows that severely limited pre-season means he'll have a severely limited season, and he's only on a one year deal at the Swans.

Just about, you'd have to think.

Apart from the four-goal match-winning cameo down at GMHBA in Round 11*, I'm predicting a lean season.

* Seems maddeningly inevitable in my view

If it’s true Menzel failed a fitness test at St.Kilda and clearly injuries cost him at contract at Geelong that’s a concern for Sydney. They have a lot of good players and need to try Andy win a flag while Buddy is there so I can understand the risk. But go against the grain with something like that you’re either an idiot or genius

To think a lot of people were critical when he was delisted.
