Demetriou is right. ? "AFL Park" Where to Build the new stadium

The State Governmnent has just built a stadium for soccer and rugby at public expense, so now it's our turn. We are OWED a stadium!

There are already two perfectly suitable stadiums for Australian rules. The Victorian government isn't going to build a third and the sport/league/supporters are certainly not "OWED" a third

Dandenong? CRANBOURNE? These are terrible locations for a stadium. They're all the way out in outer suburbia for ****'s sake. People in western and northern Melbourne would simply not go, thus creating really shit match attendance and negating the whole point of having a 'boutique' stadium (not that there is a point to having a 'boutique' stadium, clubs that are poor are poor because they have few supporters, not because Docklands is allegedly trying to rape their souls).

So you people in the western and northern suburbs shouldn't have to travel?....yet the fans in the south and east should?
Try living on the Peninsula...2 hrs each way to a game.FFS.
The demographic centre of Melbourne is the sth eastern suburbs!
That's right your all unemployed and poor in the west...wouldn't want you to spend money on travelling to the footy!

The AFL had 10+ bloody stadiums, but they shut them down and made all the clubs play at Docklands. The govt. shouldn't build anything; taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for the AFL short-sightedness.

Waverley used to hold 78000 people. What the hell is wrong with the AFL? That was a great ground.

Not our fault you decided to live so far away from the CBD.

I think Moorabin would be a good spot, St Kilda still hold the lease on the land (local council can't do anything with it), The existing stands are already being demolished (wont have to pay most of the demolition costs). Not too far or near the city. Perfect for the AFL to build on, just a matter of the AFL dealing with the local council. Build a Skilled stadium type setup.

Carlton fans saying Princes Park, it will never happen. You screwed over every club to play a home game there, and as long as you own it, you make the money off the games. will never happen

only problem with this is parking. i never went to moorabbin oval (age) but apparently it was a mess, people parking down streets everywhere. wasnt a problem as most locals went to the footy, these days though they dont, could cause a lot of legal issues

2025 is only 16 years off, which in stadium years is really not that long.

it would actually be wayyy cheaper to drip feed the poor clubs till then that to build a new 50000 seater. on the other hand the government will most likely pay for a stadium whereas the AFL would do the drip feeding.

if you need a third stadium for the time being, negotiate to get princess park running again. surely the money required for ground improvements to get it to AFL standard cant be that much, and if you get a bargain there with a very low break even (surely this cant be hard to negotiate if the option is between 18 games a year and none) then it will really help out the poorer clubs until the the docklands becomes AFL park and the AFL bends the MCC over the barrel.

Olympic park
Squash in a really compact one with lots of 'alternete' facilities like creche and playground to make it family friendlly to attract people along to the less attractive games (melb v gold coast)
Would also be useful as a VFL venue and occasionally could put running track or even use it for medium crowd cricket games

South melbourne old ground.
Stadium reconfigurable to be used for GP viewing too.
as above family friendly

Sandown park
Is eastern suburbs and has trainline

Princes park
Wasnt a bad ground but carlton were so unwelcoming. There is a train station (near the zoo) but never publicised

Monday/ Thursday night TV footy.
Take those games which arent going to be big drawing and go on tour - canberra - darwin - anywhere really. Just make it FTA TV based

All the clubs with low supporter bases were offered on numerous occasions deals to play out of Princes Park eg. Melbourne, Bulldogs, Kangawho's etc. but you all wanted to live in your deluded world of 'competing with the big boys'. They made their beds so let them lie in it. To build a new stadium in Melbourne would be ridiculous.

Your incompetent club ran PP though and any deals offered were worse than TD, why do you think Collo moved games to TD from PP? Despite not getting a good deal it was much better than that shithole the way it was run.

IMO this is just talk from the AFL trying to scare the MCC and Docklands in to better deals. Short of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, the AFL (or government) aren't going to fund a new stadium.

Play a few low drawing games at Punt Rd instead, put up some temporary grandstands. Yeah it's a small ground but who cares. Casey Fields would also be an option because of the population growth in the area but transport would be a massive issue.

Stuff Princes Park and Moorabbin. Been and gone, they can't just come to the party when it suits them. The operators have had their chances.

PS Wayne Jackson and Waverley Park say hi!

This little argument has been going on for ages, since even before the concept of a league-owned stadium. This being the case, it comes at a great surprise that, notwithstanding state government meddling, the AFL is now in the situation that it is in.

The AFL Reserve, and the AFL Membership concept, has it's roots back in the VFL Park days. The concept between the VFL Park membership and the MCC Membership was pretty similar. Pay your x amount a year, and gain access to the best in 1970's hospitality. One of the biggest selling points (then, as it is now) for VFL Park membership was access to the VFL Grand Final, which was to be played at VFL Park from 1984.

John Cain, former premier of Victoria, knocked back development of VFL Park (VFL-funded, mind you) back in the 80's, threatened to introduce leglislation to give Spring Street the power to allocate major events to "suitable venues" and therefore set the course that we are now on. Huge conflict of interest, mind you, because at the end of the day it is the Victorian Government that ultimately owns the MCG.

As we now know, the ultimate outcome behind the deal struck between the VFL, the MCG Trust and the MCC is the Great Southern Stand, and the AFL Reserve that resides within it. To hold up their end of the deal, the AFL plays 45 home and away games a season, plus finals, plus the Grand Final for the next 40-ish years.

This isn't anything new to those over 30-ish, or anyone who has an intimate interest in the history of this competition. That said, who's idea was it to sign these deals, given the AFL takes ownership of the Dome in 2025? What was their reasoning?

One of the problems was that Carlton as landlords were no better than Docklands management. Everyone who played there got completely ripped off, which is why those that could left again in a hurry.

you mean sub-leasing dont you? the city of melbourne owned the ground...besides, they had a brand new grandstand to pay off. what they did wasnt unlike a property investor who's been slugged with high interests and rising land tax.....pass on the cost.

The State Govt has identified Dandenong as a critical growth hub. A 50,000 seat stadium serviced by train could be built on land between Dandenong and Yarraman station adjacent to East Link.

Haven't been down that way in some time but is that the Dandenong Showgrounds?

Nobody wanted to save your sorry arses with that white elephant investment, especially on the terms you offered and with absolutely no corporate or social club entertainment facilities on offer. And the parking and public transport options blew chunks.

You guys in Victoria whinge too much. This is Subi every weekend. To make it worse, it is illegal to park on most of the streets on game day, so you have to park ages away.

When the AFL takes possession of the Dome, it will be more or less the age that VFL Park was when it was being squeezed out for being out-of-date.

I don't understand why people keep suggesting eastern and outer eastern suburbs when two of the teams in mind are based in the western suburbs and the other where the western and nothern suburbs meet are two of the teams who are the teams that this is supposed to benefeit.

A bulldogs home game vs fremantle in dandenong, casey, waverly etc? come on guys... seriously.
