Demetriou is reported to have said that Richmond winning against Essendon proves that they aren't tanking.

But isn't the fact that Richmond are still on less than 5 wins for the season (any more than 5 and clubs miss out on a priority pick) still the key point? Therefore, Tiges are still eligible for a PP, despite their win.

Or am I missing something?

Yep, you missed that if they stayed under 4 wins they would set themselves up for a PP in the first round next year.

You also missed that any more than 4 wins in a season then no priority pick that year. We have a draw :). As far as next year it would also mean we would have to tank next year to get that priority pick . Guess we miss both

Okay an exact defininition

Changes were made to the rules in 2006:

1- The Priority Round was shifted, so that it was held between the First and Second rounds of the draft.
2- Teams would receive a Priority Selection only if they finished the season with fewer than 16.5 premiership points.
3- If a team finished with fewer than 16.5 premiership points in two consecutive seasons, then their Priority Selection is taken before the First Round.

Ofcourse the Tigers are not going to tank Andrew Demitriou. They have a caretaker coack in Rawlings who is trying to secure a permanetn coachin position so ofcourse he is going to try and win every game to prove he is the man for the job. If the tigers are his proof that tanking does not exist than he is kind of stupid or delusional IMO.

Agree 100%. Vlad is an absolute Muppet.

What if Richmond had won only four games last year, do you think they would have been as keen to win on the weekend? pick 17 is nothing, pick 2 is something.

Scrap the first round priority pick all together....

I wonder which genius thought of 16.5 premiership points. They could have said fewer than 18 premiership points given that it is impossible to gain half or one premiership points in a game.

So just because Richmond aren't tanking it means that West Coast, Freo and Melbourne aren't and won't?
Vlad is a tool.
Only Melbourne and WC are eligible for a pick at the start of the rounnd 1.

No point aiming for a priority next year either with GC coming in

Having endured a poor performance from the Bombers live at the game on Sunday I can vouch that the Tigers were trying to win.

In fact they played very well. Young Jack Reiwoldt has excellent hands and whilst a little short for a power forward he is quick and will no doubt give plenty of defences a problem in years to come. I reckon there will be plenty of Tiger kids running around No. 8 on their back.

The problem for Demetriou is the perception of tanking.

yes, it appears some teams have tanked at the selection table late in the season, but from time immortal teams have played kids towards the end of the season to give them a run when their finals chances are gone.
Unfortuantely, the priority pick as well intented as it clearly is, does reward teams for limiting wins to 4 games or less.

It is subject to manipulation and some clubs like Carlton are willing to sacrifice their club culture to gain a priority pick.

The bigger issue is that whilst Carlton for example in 2005 or so may have tanked, dropping from 14th to 15th on the ladder (just guessing) the perception throws a dark shadow over the whole competition leading to wide speculation of tanking which is clearly unhealthy.

So the Tigers may not have tanked, but their fans obviously thought they might as a game that normally would draw 60,000, only managed 47,500 - costing the AFL a chance to break it’s all time attendance record which it was clearly on track to do prior to the game.

I wouldn’t propose throwing the whole system out and whislt the next two years are going to be modifed anyway to suit the new teams, a review of the priority pick is in order.

When perception becomes reality Mr Demetriou you also have to be seen to be acting. ie: meet perception with perception, not denial.

Its to save the confusion. If it was fewer than 18 points everyone would be confused when a team was on 18 points. but 16.5 points is much more clear on what qualifies. Much like the TAB with their line bets or Under 39.5 points.

Yeah, but "under 17 premiership points" would have been sufficient - You can't get 17 premiership points in a season, so there's no ambiguity.

16.5 is arbitrary and unnecessary - Why not 16.1? That's even more precise.

what the hell difference does it make? of all the things to whinge about, this would probably be the most minor i've ever seen.

Is it just me or does Demetriou sound very similar to the Iraqi Propaganda Minister.

I can see the TV report now. Demetriou out the front saying "I can assure you there is no tanking going on", whilst in the background the replay of Carlton playing Melbourne for the Kreuzer cup is on.

-There is no injuries to Cox and Kerr
-Embley missed on purpose from 10m out
-They are playing players far out of position
-They lost to Melbourne who are so bad they have been compared to the Fitzroy of 1995 or so. They lost to Melbourne WITH SEVERAL PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS OUT ON THE FIELD AGAINST TEENAGERS.

Sure Richmond may not be tanking and good on them, but there sure is other teams who are and fat fonzy bury his head in the sand needs to face some facts before the game brand becomes irreparable damaged.

Maybe when it affects crowd and the dollars than fat fonzy will start to get the picture.

Will be an interesting game against Essendon this week, with the Dons
making changes, Lloyd, Watson, McVeigh, Davey - and even Lovett
thrown around as POSSIBLE outs.

If Richmond can beat Essendon, then Id expect WC to give them a shake
on their home turf, so the Weagles will have the tank on like never before.

I find it interesting how so many people think West Coast are tanking yet not much is said about the teams below us on the ladder (Freo and Melbourne). Maybe it is because they have had injuries to key players and are blooding lots of first and second year players .

Actually, I think there is. Next year you will get a PP in front of the GC, so it is more beneficial than in almost any year ever. If WC/Melb gets less than 4 wins this year and next year, then they will have pick 1, not the GC.
