Autopsy Demons 97 defeat Dogs 71. Never was so much owed by so many to so few

Serious question- what was with Bonts delay in selecting which end to kick to after he won the toss? Never seen that before, ever. Flukey conditions with the wind, trying to find the cheer squad end, wanting to kick downhill ?

It's a concern Melbourne spotted 26 targets inside 50 for 17 marks (65%), while we spotted 22 targets inside 50 for 6 marks (27%).

is it surprising when that effort becomes the normal?

I can't see us winning next week.

Gahhhh

We started so well last year.

im not surprised tbh, they were pretty lack lustre in the community matches. It will take em a few more games to find their gear IMO

Very true, can't say it's even a surprise for 2022 including our two practice games, we’ve had 65 shots from 179 inside 50s (36%) which is horrid.
A combination of puzzling selections and lack of forward structure seems to be the main factors

In the match day thread their were multiple comments that our players looked as if they weren't trying or coasting, especially after half time. 20 points in 2.5 quarters of football in perfect footy conditions says it all

Melbourne came off the ground and you could tell by their faces they are comfortable beating us.
On the balance of play this was a 10 goal defeat. And they have another gear to go up.

They know they have our measure.

Worse than that is our players believe they have our measure.

As for Bevo's outburst at the journo, if leaking the team sheet is the reason we played like we did, then the problems are bigger than he thinks.
Agree think we were mentally beat before the match begun. It looks like we don't feel like we have the weapons to go with Melbourne.
Panic with no pressure on and cough the ball up in dangerous spots. We need to take a long hard look at being harder at the contest at all times

Good point
The way I see it
Melbourne honor the lead and we don't
Melbourne had so much space to lead into which makes it much easier to honour the kead. In contrast very little space in our forward line but even when we did hardly ever put the ball to our forwards advantage. Repeatedly picked out a Melbourne player and they would be off too the races into you guessed it an open forward 50 and after half time they finished well.

This is so ******* annoying.

Stupid ******* distractions anyway, now this stupid bullshit and noise around nonsense easily avoided by a coach who should know better.

Surprisingly I’m really close to being comfortable if Bevo leaves. I’d much rather he stays, because he’s a better coach than most of the comp, but if we’re stuck with the denial re. ruck./KPD issues and now it’s coupled with AFL media conspiracy theories then who knows.
Totally disagree. Bevo did a Putin on Morris. I reckon he had inside info about the complaint about Morris' mysogonistic comments and Bevo pounced. Well done Bevo. Those Fox news journos are scum. Also this is ammo for the rest of the season.

An outside rando's rankings after watching the replay for anyone who cares.
Everyone starts at 0 and only goes up (i.e. below 5 doesn't necessarily mean a "bad" game)

Macrae 9/10
B Smith 9/10
Bontempelli 8/10
Dunkley 8/10
Crozier 8/10
-
English 7/10
Naughton 7/10
Richards 6/10
Treloar 6/10
Dale 6/10
-
Daniel 5/10
R Smith 5/10
Liberatore 4/10
Gardner 4/10
-
Hunter 3/10
Vandermeer 3/10
Cordy 2/10
Hannan 2/10
Keath 2/10
Weightman 2/10
-
Williams 1/10
Schache 1/10

  • Star midfielders played to their usual standards and can't be faulted
  • defenders (Gardner/Keath) really struggled with checking and keeping touch on Brown, lots of barely contested marks
  • Williams and Schache were clanger merchants and probably should be on the chopping block.
  • Losing Martin and not playing Ugle-Hagan hurt. English and/or Ugle-Hagan up forward was needed as Naughton was the only presence up forward and he can't do it alone.

Thanks for that. There are stats for everything now. Not surprised they outdid us in sprints and repeat efforts (14-27, that’s a belting I assume). IMO they looked to be able to get clear easily when they attacked and covered us well when we attacked and I put that down to work rate rather than system at a guess.

We had different kind of entries for most of the night. A lot of Melbournes were from turnovers in our F50 which slungshot back for quick entries while our defence was not set up or stuck playing 1 on 1 which we struggle with.

We didn't force enough turnover scores ourselves. Fluffed multiple opportunities through skill error which hurt us on the way back.

I didn't go to the game so it's hard to say if we just got sucked too far forward to defend on their way out of our f50 or we just got out worked in transition. I suspect a bit of both.

Bevo is a fifty something year old man who doesn’t have social media. Highly doubt he’s sitting on leaked messages. More likely it’s some random dogs fan

This is a serious question and I am aware there have been some injury issues but is anyone else of my opinion that VDM has not progressed in performance since his first game? I had very high expectations of him early and am surprised at how he is performing.
As I stated earlier today I'm not a great fan of Vandermeer ... so far.

He's still young. I'm always happy to give a player time to learn, improve or get his shit together (some take longer than others) but at this stage he wouldn't be in my first 22.

My knocks on him are that he doesn't handle cleanly enough, is easily brushed or harassed off the ball and more generally doesn't impact the game enough. His disposal is no better than average. He used to be good defensively in his early games IIRC but I'm not sure he even does that well at the moment. Just checked his career stats. If anything he did better in his first season (2020) than in 2021, although he had more CPs and GAs in his second season.

There's something to work with there but we have similar players in Garcia and Jones coming through. What I've seen of Garcia would have him in front of Vandermeer IMO. Jones may be even more promising than the pair of them but is only starting his senior footy so might need some time.
