Things can be more than one thing. An authority is someone or something which is recognised as having expert knowledge in a field and power to dictate policy and law. Science most certainly is defined as, and acts as an authority. Recent experience ring any bells?

It's almost as if you've misused the Holocaust as a way of suggesting that people during the recent pandemic have been blinded in adhering to government policy.

I'm sure you wouldn't do that, though. It'd be totally shocking and crazy.

As for an authority being someone who has both expert knowledge and control over policy and law, I can't think of something which is generally further from the truth. The notion of tertiary institutions as 'Ivory Towers' goes both ways: they contain authorities in their fields who can be too detached from our social life, and there is often little connection between their authoritative work and policy.

This is before you even start to consider that, in most fields, the 'authorities' in them rarely concur of all of the important questions.

I enjoy a good holocaust discussion but not with the too easily offended and prone to moral outrage.

Uh huh.

Is that your way of saying that you don't like when someone points out that you don't really know what the f*** you're talking about?

If it makes you happy I'm happy for you to think that.

I’m cooking my own

Lovely.

I prefer what I can make; homemade pizza is majestic.

But a lazy day, and I might have ordered a generous tub of orange gelato to go along with the pizza.

I have never understood how you ended up as a mod. Constant flamer. Play the ball.

You say play the ball by attacking the fact that he's a moderator?

He put forward an opinion to counter another opinion. Seems reasonable.

I was responding as a poster and asserted that the appraisal of Howe's contribution is clueless. That is playing the ball.

Once again yesterday Howe was asked to punch above his weight. Cameron kicked 3, hardly set the world on fire. Can't recall any of them being directly attributable to Howe.

I won't apologise for calling out the potting of one of our best players over the last few years. The poster I responded to is free to continue the discussion by explaining to me how his appraisal is actually well considered and appropriate.

Thanks for your vote of confidence on my moderating abilities, that's not playing the man at all. It would seem this is something you've reflected on and waited for an opportunity to share your view with the board.

Sure it is. You didn't need to use the word clueless. The excuse you are defending the team is where I see your posts, as a poster coming from. Discuss opinions, no need to comment on the holder of them. It flames the discussion. The first two words of your post were irrelevant, simply about your personal response.

ps. yes, I am playing the man in this case, because I am not discussing your opinions rather the way you express them.

Yeah I am a hypocrite JB. Its a personal gripe. There is a pinned thread started by jathanas discussing personal abuse. IMO before, in thread and since said mod as never shown an understanding of what personal abuse it. The word clueless had nothing to do with a counter to the opinion.

Which makes you a hypocrite, no? Because you are strong in your view that I shouldn't be playing the man.

I'm not trying to excuse my behaviour or apologise for it. I wasn't playing the man, I strongly questioned one poster's view and they have the right of response.

You're playing the man because you're carrying a gripe back from when the mod team started a thread enforcing standards re: potting the club and personal abuse in 2021. Overwhelmingly it was very well received, except by your good self. It's trite and predictable.

My personal gripe is around the way in which what used to be termed flaming is generally ignored. I believe we would all be better off if posters chose their words a little more carefully and responded to the post, not the poster. In your case the impression I have gained over time is the tendency to smack the poster in refuting the post. Rightly or wrongly I believe this sets a tone and would rather that tone not be set.
That said I very grateful that you and other past/present mods take on the role.

You're unable to see the double standard in your behaviour.

I labelled someone's potting of a player as clueless and explained why. I elaborated.

You took offense because "clueless appraisal" is flaming language, and questioned my worthiness as a mod.

You have a gripe that goes back years and found an opportunity to take a dig.

I appreciate your gratitude.

Peace.

I reckon a mod could move this to the derailed thread no?

;)
