Analysis Derek Hine leaves the Pies

Reading between the lines, I don't think Fly and Leppa thought that highly of his recruiting. At the very least Leppa believes it can be improved.
Yep, reads like Hine was pushed

Thanks Derek. A job well done.

Going to be a very nervous time at Pieland over next 5 to 10 years.

Thanks Dekka for all the efforts and teams you have helped assemble over the years. Great talent scout and has really played a massive part in our continued success over that period. All the best with your future endeavours.

Let's wait until we shut the book on his record - he still gets 2025 on his report card surely, since there is no recruiting to be done until the season is over. Should get another prelim or better.

No bad feelings intended , but what saved Hines arse with his recruiting especially recently were our father and sons.
He stuffed that year we had 2 top 10 picks and both were huge misses
Although injury played a big role with Freeman and Sharenberg.
Let's not forget Stephenson top 5 pick I think.
Seemed to have done well with his later pick
All the best for him in his future endeavours

Stevenson won a rising star in his first year on the list, and played a key role in a grand final team. I think Hine would mark that selection down as a win.

Very sad that Hine is leaving.

He was very good at what he did. People criticising Freeman/Scharenberg should remember we actually traded up to nab Bontemptelli and missed by 1 pick. He nailed Langdon the same draft.

The only bad miss I think is Holmes being next pick after Macrae in what was a under exposed draft pool.

If anything I dont think we backed him enough with the draft.

All the best to him easily the best recruiter we have had in my 40 years plus supporting the pies.

I’ve witnessed three flags in my 60+ years. Two of them in the past 15 years when Derek Hine was the main recruiting man. Easy to snipe from the cheap seats about who he drafted and who he didn’t….but he’s helped deliver results that Collingwood hasn’t seen since the 50s.

That said, jobs aren’t forever and he’s had a good run. Not concerned in the least about any alleged friction. All good clubs have that.

I'd argue that malthouse and fly had more to do with the success than Hine. The amount of flops he's picked far out weighs his impact on our lists. We didn't get rid of him because he's a great recruitment boss

And the recruiting boss in my view is probably the most important role in a footy club. It is one of the key competitive advantages a club can have that can drive separation from the other clubs.

I really hope we have a super strong candidate to replace him with.

Trading up and missing is a clear fail.

The biggest error that draft was Cripps.

Hine overall has been a great servant and of course nailed a number of picks in his 21 years.
This is the right time for both parties to head in different directions.
I'm truly excited by what our future recruiting will look like.
This trade and draft period just completed has been very evident that there are very good times ahead.
Best wishes DH.

Hines' record at recruiting stars is solid, considering the caper is hit-and-miss, but he was a cog and will be replaced.

Identifying talent is important, but once recruited, the club must transform these young footballers into elite AFL players.

Collingwood has been lucky to have competent people in both recruiting and development.

I still maintain the Malthouse and Fly were the driving force behind our 2 flags

Thanks Deker for the past 20yrs+ and boy there has been LOTS of changes over that time in AFL so it's quite remarkable the longevity at one club. Pretty easy at times to be snipped too ... as in, should of got this pick, this pick was bad, we're lacking this type of player so why aren't we targeting them!?! etc.

But personally if I could point out 2 stand out selections that would be the envy of any recruiter from the entire history of the game, with both players going onto be Premiership players. The first is a player turned out not only to become the Pies games record holder, has the most touches in the history of our game, is the sixth player to reach over 400 games, a generational player that slowed down time, AND has the potential to be the all time games recorder holder. The second landed a very tall Texan who broke the hearts of the Tiges 2018 premiership surge, has played over 125 games, also kicked a goal with his first kick, and someone so gutsy that when almost going blind from a poke in the eye ... recovers, comes back, almost delisted and becomes a premiership player.

Enjoy your next phase Deker and thanks.
