News Dermott Brereton taps Tex on the shoulder

He's still our best forward.*

*due to Fog's injury
Correct

Tex looks our most dangerous forward, and AFL player ratings support that. The only one we have in the top 20. Also our leading goal kicker with 10, next up is a group who have 5.

Still he is a shadow of his former self and I suspect will stand down soon enough to let *checks notes* Himmelberg and Fogarty take the reigns

We talked about this on the crowcast last night. It's not just that Tex isn't performing, I believe it also has an impact on Fogarty. We need to give Fog the keys to F50.

Considering Tex took a paycut to free up cap space, I'd be happy for the club to pay him out. I'd be dropping him this week with the message he only comes back for injury.

Also, am I the only one who'd rather see Mods retain the goal kicking record?
I don’t disagree they probably don’t work together long term. But Fog is 1st game back after 6-7 weeks off with no proper match practice to regain full fitness.

I certainly wouldn’t be leaving him solo with that preparation. I mean his best ever game in Perth he kicked 5 with Tex there so it can work, but I agree only short term.

I certainly can’t see it being a pressing enough issue to leave Tex stranded on 197 games. Would be a poor decision IMO.

That said, I’ve no care at all about the goalkicking - that could take forever the way he’s going!

What is there 7 games left? Give him his 3, rest him for a couple, then bring him back to finish the year and a farewell game at AO.

Got nothing to do with the multiple players hanging off him I suppose?

Almost every contest I see with Tex involved, goes one of 2 ways.

1) in a 1v1, he immediately looks for his man and tries to make contact with him, taking his eye off the ball in the process, and usually ends up no where near the drop of the ball.

2) He approaches a pack and puts one hand up in an attempt to "contest".

I also have no problems with him playing 3 games this year to get to his 200.

Not about whether he is our best forward or not. Also if he is our best forward(which he is not) god help us as it doesn't say much for our recruiting and list management dept. We are not trying to make finals. Its about developing a forward line for 2 to 3 years time when we hopefully begin to make our way up the ladder. This line of thinking of not developing our list is the exact reason the club is in the current predicament of sitting on 55.1% with no wins. I would prefer to know if Fog will make it this year (which I am beginning to doubt) than 2 years time especially with gun forwards in this years draft.

Even until he became Captain in his own right Sloane has been the on field leader for years.

Supporters hate me saying it but Jenkins was the off field leader. He was the senior player that the vast majority of players had the most faith in. He was the one they listened too.

Jenkins wasn't very good in that role apart from he always spoke up and in the end it was to his detrement but like it or not Tex's role was more to do with Roo than his standing in the playing group.

It shouldn't never have been that way and that's a big reason why we are where we are.
Jesus Christ. If Jenkins was the unofficial off-field leader then no wonder we are where we are now. What a club!

If he deserved 200 games he'd get 200 games.

If he doesn't deserve them he shouldn't get them.

Gifting milestones to players cheapens them for everyone who actually earns selections for their games.

2017 - 23 Games, 54 goals, 33 goal assists, is part of a Crows team that finished 2nd for clearances and 2nd for I50's. Has two other talls who are reasonably agile and are able to get to contests/crash packs and provide an option.
Eddie Betts + CC creating pressure inside 50 helping Crows come 5th for tackles I50, and providing their own goal assists.

2018 - 14 Games, 26 goals - Charlie Cameron gone, McGov plays 12 games. Crows drop to 7th in clearances, 12th in centre clearances, 10th for I50's and 9th for tackles I50. Tex is known to be carrying a foot injury throughout the whole year, has foot surgery at the end of the year.

2019 - 22 Games, 43 goals, 15 goal assists, McGov is gone, Crows drop to 10th in clearances, 15th in centre clearances, 12th for Inside 50's

2020 - Leading Goal kicker AND leading goal assists. No JJ or Eddie. Crows team now ranking 18th for inside 50's, 17th for clearances, 18th for centre clearances. Supply into the forward line, both quality and quantity, is now gone.

Don't get me wrong, i DO believe his form has dropped off, but IMO the stats don't lie. The supply into that forward line is practically non-existent now and had been getting progressively worse after 2017. We have midfielders who can't get it out of the middle, and when they do they stick it on the boot, then when it is heading into the forward line Tex is doing the heavy lifting in the contest instead of being given an option to lead to the ball, and he has a TONNE of inexperienced players around him now. At his age it should be expected that another key forward moves in to take the number one spot, with Tex as support, similar to Jack Riewoldt now at Richmond. At the moment Fogarty is not that player, so people need to be a lot more patient with our forward line in general as it is a massive work in progress.

The biggest haters of Tex, IMO, are the older generation of Crows supporters who still can't come to grips that a key position player can impact a game without scoring goals these days. Even in 2019 when you had a whole bunch of people on here saying he had a crap year, Champion data had him rated as ELITE, with their scoring taking into account many more facets of a players game than pure numbers.

I think moving forward Tex is still a valuable member of the team. Having Tex in the forward line and Talia in defense really helps with controlling and educating the young forwards and defenders. I would play him for the remainder of the year.

Tex for forward line coach?

No to Tex as a coach. Should move to another team if he wants to begin his coaching career

Yep, but we can't "gift" him 3 more games to make 200 … no way!

You've just highlighted the most frustrating thing with Walker.

It makes no sense to me why he does this, the ball comes in and he takes his eye off it and looks at the defender and then starts jostling with them. I don't see other forwards doing it so it's always puzzling to see Walker constantly doing it all the time.

The other classic Tex is where he has front spot, but then spins behind the defender who then takes front position and marks the ball.

It's a failure of our coaching staff that no one has instructed Walker to stop doing it and it doesn't help when we have a buffoon as our forward line coach. Any coach worth their salt would have been telling Tex to keep his eyes on the ball, play from the front and attack the ball and not worry the defender.

Maybe it's a Matthew Clarke "don't jump to confuse the other ruckman" tactic that has never worked, never will work and is a stupid idea to begin with

Maybe Ben Hart hasn't realised yet that he's a forward line coach and has been instructing Walker to play as a defender by trying to stop defenders from marking the ball.

You're right, he does do on most occasions. It's usually because the ball isn't being delivered to where he is leading, but to the defenders advantage.

He's got the time to stop, look back, engage / jostle and then the ball's still on his head.

It only means the player kicking the ball has missed their target by about 15m, or they have been instructed to kick the ball on top of the forward's head.

Tex for forward line coach?
I agree...except for the coaching part. We need external influence.

That ACL really hurt his ability to jump and turn, this is the point in our club where we can establish ourselves as a functioning, caring, people oriented football club OR a cold, boring corporation "franchise" club where players are spat out.

We give Tex a heartwarming send off and it sews the fabric of a real football club that nobody wants to leave.

Ditto Mackay
Ditto Lynch
Ditto Sloane
100% agree
