Mid Season Notes & Thoughts by yours truly...
- I knew from the get-go that Wicks and SMD would do well but I did not realise they would be as strong as what they are. Well done to both clubs so far, no doubt they will go deep into finals actions and at least 1 of these if not both clubs are D2 bound.
-Canterbury have really bounced back after a disappointing 2021 campaign. They seem a balanced side and can real threaten the top 2. Good spread of goalkickers and play a good brand of footy
-EStL are hard to get a read on, havent watched much of them but some results have been inconsistent, I suspect they will be fighting for a finals spot
-Parkside & Richmond, both started strong and have slowed down a bit. Some shock losses as well for both sides over the season, I had high hopes for Parkside this season but they have not been able to replicate their 2021 form.
-NB, another team that have been up and down, some good wins and some disappointing. Perhaps hurt by injuries (like most clubs), they are mostly competitive but will not be there at the pointy end. Have struggled in D3 since promotion but are usually competitive.. But watch out as they can surprise a few teams along the way if they get a full list playing
-Hawthorn, a first half of 2022 to forget. Arguably the season favourite before round 1 they have been disappointing to say the least. Once again, according to sources, injuries have really hurt them but same for most clubs. They are a dark horse and can potentially push for finals if they can string a few games together - look out other teams.
-Westbourne well 2022 is a disaster, not competitive, struggling to field a reserves side most weeks. It's been the season from hell. (mich like AP last season) Hopefully they can bounce back in D4 nxt season and wish them all the best. All clubs come across these types of years, if they can get through it, im sure they can be competitive.

In general:
-I dont think the standard of D3 has dropped much (if it has, would be minimal), it just shows how good the Wicks & SMD clubs are this year and thier reserves results show a lot of depth
-Its still a even season and I think 6 of 8 teams can potentially make finals but a few of those would need a lot to go their way
-Traditionally the next 6 weeks are the hardest for clubs, weather is miserable, numbers dwindle
-Depth is key, most of the D3 clubs have a clubbies this season which shows great numbers. and strength in numbers is key to a successfull campaign
-Injuries, after a couple of togh season with lack of games, injuries seem to be mounting every where, it was bound to happen and shows just how important depth is. Not to mention isolation protocols in place, trust vast majority of players are doing the right thing..,. but this adds a layer to unavailable players

Good luck to everyone

Canterbury in a close one
SMD in the game of the round aka a close one
Hawthorn in a close one
Richmond (not) in a close one

Great game at Rathmines with the Hawks prevailing in the end. Hopefully this kick starts a late run in the back half of the season. That 4th spot is still up for grabs but while I have a soft spot for the Hawks they are certainly a class or two below the top 3.

How did Parkside look? I remember playing against them when they were in the NFNL and they left to the VAFA with the main reason I heard was there strong junior club wanted to play against VAFA school boy sides but it seems they are stuck in lower grades for a few years now.

Was at this game as well, really good game of football. Hawthorn shot out to a 6 goal lead at one stage but to Parksides credit they kept chipping away. I was really impressed with both teams attack on the ball and the big fella at FF from Parkside turned it on in the last after not touching it for most of the day.
Might be a worrying trend for the Citz’s as they gave up the same lead against Richmond.
Big game this week.

They looked really good, I'm happy to give nearly every club a pass mark this season especially after the last two interrupted seasons.

In speaking with a few reps from Parkside, they have 3 senior sides and a really strong junior program. A number of those that played juniors at the club played in the 1's on Saturday. The two's looked well drilled with a number of them certain to play senior football in the back end of the year.

I certainly think in the next 3-5 years they will be moving up the grades once again.

Ventured out to Kevin Bartlett to watch the Citz's take on the Richmond (who to my surprise are the Snakes not the Tigers). The Citzs started really well and had the game in control at half time. It was not a game for the ages with both sides having a number of players missing.
I was told that the Citzs have now played 49 players in their 1s - with two more playing on the weekend.
Great (and surprised) to see Phil Avery playing in the seniors at the age of 50. Yes, 50!! He held his own.
Can they make the finals?

Well done to Mr Avery - that's quite an amazing effort.

Fascinating results from the weekend with Canterbury now joining SMD & Wicks to form a clear top 3.
With Hawthorn stepping up and Parkside playing better footy too, they have formed a large pack of teams on 4 wins vying for the final spot in the finals.
As with previous seasons NB & Westbourne a bit behind the others.
Makes for a great run of games on the road home, every game is crucial from here on in

Yet Parkside, Hawthorn and Richmond are only 4 points ahead of NB who in your words are "a bit behind the others".

Before COVID and injuries hit they hey had beaten your team Parkside and St Leos in consecutive weeks.

I don't think they'd be far off Hawthorn in the amount of players used in the ones also.

Perhaps but results will be telling in the coming weeks. Let's see if I'm right by the end of the season, LM... Its defintly a even division this season more than previous seasons
