Do we have too many players over 30 years of age?

After 2024 we'll have a huge problem, we have a lack of top end talent in the 1-4 year category outside of Daicos.

We desperately need Macrae Mcinnes Allan Ryan to end up very good players.
We'll drop sharply if we lose them all at once, but should be fine if it's a couple of year. Like every team, well have to recruit well to replace those who go and stay near the top.

We are trying to replicate Geelong of last season who showed you're never to old until the moment you realise you are.

That Geelong Premiership side had an average age of 28yr 7mth and 167.6 games. The Geelong side who played last week had an average age of 27yr 2mth and 139.9 games.

Our side against Brisbane had an average age of 27yr 9mth and 138.3 games so mere spring chickens in comparison to the 2022 Premiers.;)

So yes we are capable of winning this years flag with all our over 30's but Geelong should serve as a warning that's there is a fine line between being in contention for a flag and simply being out of contention.

It was 11 years between flags for Selwood while it's now 13 for the likes of Pendlebury and Sidebottom. Selwood retired at 34. Pendlebury will be 36 next year.

You don't have to be a genius to know time is running out for these two greats and while some people might find it sacrilege this might well be the last roll of the dice for some of the veterans in our side.

If you're prepared to have a mature conversation about it, we haven't been able to produce a flag over the last 12 years while the likes of Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Swan (prior to retirement) and eventually Adams were still in their prime and prowling our midfield.

However what we have achieved this season to date is a testament to the longevity and quality of our veterans.

Still it seems like plain old common sense to believe that players beyond a certain age will begin to show signs of decline and it's probably unrealistic to expect all our veterans to be playing at the same level in 12 months time.

If we go on to win this years flag all those within the club will be rightfully lauded, our strategy endorsed but even in victory I would hope Fly is smart enough to understand the importance renewal could play in making sure we don't become stagnant as a team.

Should we not win the Premiership I would hope Fly is both smart enough to embrace rejuvenation but also confident enough in his position to tap some of our greats on the shoulder should their form no longer be evidently better than younger options next season.

Great post, very considered and unbiased.

People were asking for sidebottom's retirement 3 years ago.
Tom Mitchell was slow at the start of the year when he was playing well.
Jeremy Howe is playing a position that he last played half a dozen years ago.
Scott Pendlebury was one of the main reasons we staged a comeback against the Lions last game. Too few of the youngsters joined in.
Mason Cox is a better version of what he was last year.

And finally, making retirement judgements on what the situation might be in a year and is about as lunatic as BF gets.

Maybe we should get a gofundme page for david king to pay him off so he'll tell us that things are fine and we should just take our meds

Geelong would obviously show that's not too much of a problem at the moment

The difference between us and Geelong though is that the reliance on their 30 plus year olds I would argue is much heavier than ours.

I think we have better quality players overall in the 20-28 range than they do. So we should be ok for one more season on what we have.

For the older players, need to factor in how much footy they’re actually playing:

Pendlebury- played 21 of 22 games (last rest was bye round 14)
Sidebottom - played 16 of 22 games (had rounds 12-17 off)
Howe - played 10 of 22 games (had rounds 2-14 off)
Cox - played 15 of 22 games (had rounds 21-22 off)
Adams - played 21 of 22 games (last rest was the bye round 14)
Mitchell - played 22 of 22 games
Elliott - played 20 of 22 games (had a test rounds 12-14)
Hoskin-Elliott - played 19 of 22 games (had a rest rounds 18, 19 and 21)
Crisp - we all know he does not rest!

Depends on whether the older players drop off this year.

Looks like a slow decline for most of them, and so that means that we need to inject some youth and players like Mitchell or Sidebottom or Howe or Pendlebury might need a rest now and then. Mitchell is most at threat, because his pace is an issue and Macrae can play his role.

Cox might drop out just because he's unreliable.

Our list profile is not ideal but we are still the reigning Premiers, so it’s a moot point. You have to do what you do to win them. Timing is important.

After 2018 we rolled the dice and got there again, better result but that core is not getting younger. They all deserved it and dare say, without Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Howe, Elliott, Mitchell and even Cox we don’t get the result. I still have faith we’re in it this year but if we fall short the strategy will be recast for the next one.

A cliff comes for all sides eventually, just depends on how long a rebuild or how severe a rebuild the club decide on.

So far the start of 2024 looks like father time is starting catch up at least somewhat. But it's a long year, definitely think some calls will be made years end for 2025 esp if we drop down the ladder in 24.

this all depends where you draw the line.
Number of player 30 or over in 2024 (additional by end 2025) - Source Footywire

There's an adage in most areas of achievement - bad performance is either can't do it or won't do it..... I think it's a bit of both. Some have lost the need and some have either lost the capability or never had it.
